Second Chance Shelter wrote:Second Chance Shelter is a dog and cat rescue where you can come to find a new member of your family. We rescue and rehabilitate dogs and cats of all shapes and sizes so they may have the chance to be placed into a caring home. All of our animals are special and deserve a chance to be happy with an owner that will care for them. The question is: are you ready to love them?
-----
This little darling was found in a box outside of a store. No one saw who dropped them off but a good Samaritan called us so we could pick them up. They came to us as a puppy a few months ago, but are now grown enough to be adopted out. They have a few nipping problems that we have tried to work out of them since they arrived here so future adopters be aware that you will have to work with them to get them pass the habit.
For this one's competition tell me how you'll work with the nipping habit. The answer that I think is the most accurate and handled the best will win.

How Will You Work with Them?: Personally I find this question amusing because were currently working on this with our non-virtual puppy. Typically its best to try and curb this habit when theyre still young, though simular techniques can be used for older dogs.
The way I usually deal with nipping of the hands is if playing with them and the dog begins biting my hand other than a gentle play I will hold their bottom jaw and scold them no. When I grab their jaw, usually in mid nipping, I place my thumb inside their mouth and press gently down on the inside of their mouth so it is uncomfortable but not hurting them.
The way I deal with nipping of the heels (we had this problem with our sheltie rosie who passed away a couple months ago) depends on the dog and what is occuring when they nip. Herding breeds have a natural instinct to nip at the heels because this is what they were bred to do for centuries by herding livestock. If on a leash it is easiest to curb the habit. While walking at a heel if the dog begins to nip you tug on the leash as a correction and scold them with no nipping. The other way you can use this technique is by using the same correction and then making them sit. Hopefully theyll understand that if they continue nipping theyre walks will become shorter and they will be unable to run and play.
Other ways to help curb nipping habits is by giving them positive reinforcement for not nipping. Thus praising them for good behaviour as you would scold for bad behaviour.
"Youre uncomfortable now? You should walk into one of their hideouts. Its like stepping on a hornets nest, kicking it and then setting it on fire." -Avian (Dissent)

How Will You Work with Them?: I'll teach zebo that people have sensitive skin, so when he bites or nips i'll scold him and grab his scruff just enough so its not painful and to let him know that he's not doing the right thing. Ill buy Zebo some moderate chew toys so that he has something to chew when hes bored. I'll award Zebo with treats each day he doesn't nip or tear at anything. Each day i'll practice with him on what to chew and what not to chew and award him with treats along the ways. After he grows out of the toys i'll buy Zebo bones with meat as a full award.

I thought this was fairly spot on for what is recommended for working with nipping adult dogs. So, congrats. Take good care of the darling.
