In the mirror, she sees an illusion.
✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦✦
In the mirror, she sees what everyone else sees. She sees the moon and the stars. She sees a universe. She sees possibilities and impossibilities all wrapped into one expanding collage. Shooting stars and comets and planets alike adorn her fur like ornaments adorn a Christmas tree. Kalons who search for shapes in the stars can find the same shapes within her fur, and in the right lighting they even appear to twinkle just the same.
⋆
Kalons stop and stare and gasp at her fur; and why shouldn’t they? Her stars are identical to the stars that hear countless whispers and prayers each night. Her night sky is the same night sky that overlooks the world at night, protecting and guarding it. And her moon is the moon that Kalons admire from thousands of miles away, aspiring to reach it one day. Except it’s not. None of it is.
⋆
In the mirror, she sees the truth. She sees fur and a chance coloration. She sees stars that are dull in the dark, and she sees every imperfection that separates them from the ones in the sky. She sees a moon that never changes its phase, and comets that are stuck in place. She doesn’t hear the prayers or whispers and the shapes within her stars seem sloppy and rushed. She is not a star or comet or planet, she is not a night sky or an ever-expanding universe. She is not defined by what the other Kalons see.

In the mirror, she sees herself.

Name; Elidyr (Welsh; "brass, bronze"
Gender; ♀
How does this kalon see themself in the mirror?;The room was quiet.
The wardrobe was steady, solid, comforting; bare as it may be. The exterior was a warm dark oak, nearly black in color. Any previous blemishes had been buffed over, and every panel of wood shone with a smooth gloss. Its age was only evident in the faded color along the edges, a paler tan that was bleached with sun.
The cold light filtering through the windows was choked by the swirls of dust her entry had spurred into the air, and the rippling pools of shadow danced on the floor. The windows were closed, and their sheer white curtains were still.
The bed was still in its old place, adjacent to the wall, sheets tattered. Bits of bent feathers were scattered across the crumpled green duvet. A stained pillowcase was hung on one of the bedposts.
She turned her head, and a chill of anticipation curdled down the length of her spine.
Where the mirror had been there was now a faded rectangle. The wall, once a lively blue, was now a melancholy periwinkle, the greying of age having changed the tone. The rectangle itself was an odd blend of the two, a pale blue that stood stark against the rest of the aged paint.
Her paws were nearly soundless as they padded further into the room. The movement kicked up more dust as she went, and her throat tightened, the need to cough threatening to break the fragile silence. She sidled against the wall, ears minutely perking as she stared into the relative darkness behind the wardrobe.
Bracing her hind paws, she reached a front paw into the gap. The sound of rustling paper echoed dully as she took hold of the object and pulled.
The packaging had held up, even after the many years it had been there. Scooting backwards awkwardly on her hind paws, she drew the large object out into the middle of the room, the light filtering through the dust.
With one swift, sudden motion, she lifted a claw and struck the front of the package in a downwards motion. The brown packing paper tore in a jarring sound and fell to either side.
Her eyes were gleaming. Even in this dull light the star clip on her hair was flashing with every tiny adjustment of her head, the reflective surface polished and clean. Her fangs were sharp; they framed the blank line of her mouth, ivory surface smooth and clear.
This mirror had seen her first drawing. Her first steps. Her first catch. Her first braid. Her first lesson. Her first kiss. Her first breakup. Her first laptop. Her first dress. Her first letter of acceptance.
This mirror had seen the last few minutes of her family.
The kalon in the mirror looked her in the eye, holding her rapt attention. The blank mouth tightened and the gleaming eyes flickered.
Elidyr raised her gaze, looking out her old window at the shining sun.
The kalon in the mirror smiled up at her.
Elidyr sees an uncertain girl with a muddled future. Her past was wobbly, and she craves her late mother. Hung on the past, she's stuck in place and unsure of how to move on. The mirror is just another reminder of how small and scared she is in a big world.
