-originally seamstress/worked other humble "feminine" job during late medieval times
-love story? too cliche maybe, loose idea below anyways
-fell in love with passing stranger
-stranger turned out to be favored by a female deity
-offended female deity when they fell in love together
-deity makes many attempts to tear them apart, little to no success, in fact overcoming obstacles strengthens their affection
-deity finally angry beyond belief and curses Maren to drown within seven days unless she breaks off all ties with her lover
-Maren refuses and she and lover seek out help from a legendary/ancient wizard
-wizard grants her life be broken from the spell but at the cost of...something, maybe transforming to a mermaid for six hours during the night? Becoming a mermaid period? etc.
-here is where ideas run rampant, maybe wizard's spell is thwarted by deity? maybe wizard is separate deity in disguise, a helpful deity who disapproves of first deity's interference in mortal life? maybe two deities duke it out and in first deity's dying breath she seals a "death curse" on Maren, turns her to a permanent mermaid?
-either way, she's now stuck as a mermaid permanently and as a mythical creature she is now immortal
-devastated, as she can't breathe regular oxygen for more than a few minutes, needs water to survive, therefore cannot live a normal life with her lover
-shunned by all but her family and lover for her "freakishness"
-lover vows to remain by her side forever, until the end of his days
-he does exactly that
-she ends up outliving him and drifts brokenhearted through the next century or so as civilization evolves above her
-eventually she resurfaces, but the world has changed and she's glimpsed by a kalon who spreads news of her?
OR-she only resurfaces a few times in a year, instead spending her life in the most beautiful parts of the ocean she can find
-she slowly learns to accept life as it comes and finds happiness in the sea and what it has to offer
-the end, le fin, das ende, hooray
