It's a quarter past one in the morning, a starless night as dark clouds had taken a hold over the sky. Basil let the door to his car swing shut as he climbed out, following a worn stone pathway up to a cottage, the shingles of the roof peeling, the gutters unhinged and precariously hanging, ready to fall to the ground with a dull clatter. It had taken a span of only a few months for the once prestigious cottage to fall into a fit of ruins. Basil tucked a strain of his long stormy grey hair behind his ear as he searched blindly in his bag for a set of keys, sliding the flashy gold one into the lock, turning it a few times before with a blunt shoulder bump the door popped open with a low pitched whine. A silence radiated from the dark halls of the home that did not retreat when the cord of his entry way lamp was given a quick jerk and a small flicker of light gave way to a bright illumination of the hall, floral wallpaper withering away near the trim and an aged yellow tint discoloring the once baby blue back ground with peachy pink daisies. "Palindrome!" Basil called setting his bag to rest against the wall with the door shut behind him.
There was a several minute pause, a soft click of nails against the old wood giving away the presence of a dog. An old merle Shetland sheepdog rounding the corner, a prominent limp on the back left hind leg, tongue lolling out of an open mouth and long flowing tail wagging quickly behind the old dog. "Oh whose my good 'ol boy?" Basil asked cracking a closed lip smile and giving the dog a gentle ear scratch and passing by him to the living room, falling back into a rust colored couch, the kind that could've fit into an old '80s television show.
He took a moment to sit in silence after turning on the reading lamp on the end table next to where he sat, leaving his old boxy TV off. It was late and Basil new he should get some rest from his long day, yet his body was tired, he felt wildly awake, with a dull ache in his chest. "Palindrome god this is going to be so hard," he whispered taking a deep breath and trying to steady his shaking. "He's really gone I thought we'd have a little bit longer with him," Basil whispered quickly wiping away a tear with the back of his hand.
The past few months had been spent with constant hospital visits along side his ninety-one year old grandfather how'd been experiencing constant health scares and a downward spiral in everything. It had started the previous day early in the morning when Chip Madeline, his grandfather began experiencing black outs and aches in his chest. Leaving the dog to himself with everything he;d need for a while, Basil had rushed with his last known living relative into the city to the hospital. At exactly 4:46am the crippling blow had been delivered to Basil, his grandfather would not live for much more than two days. So Basil sat beside Chip's hospital bed, holding his hand and pushing down the tears and sobs fighting to escape while they laughed about their adventurers, holiday stories, and as Chip grew quiet and weaker with each passing interval of ten minutes or so, Basil began to read in a soft voice for a while until he'd reached the end and set it back into his back. It was only a short while after that, 12:26am, that Basil had lost one of the two closest things to him, Chip Madeline, the man that had cared for him in his cottage ever since he was a young boy.
Now growing close to two in the morning Basil turned the TV on to a low volume setting and sat with his old dog. "You know if I could have just a single wish Palindrome what it would be? I'd think it would have to be plant a garden right where Grandma's used to be in memory for Chip, and that no matter what, it will always be healthy, that they both could live together in the garden they fell in love in," Basil whispered not stopping to tears that now rolled down his cheeks, dropping onto the remote.
Basil knew he could never have the exact wish, but the following spring, he took it upon himself to rebuild the garden in his wish, two heart shaped stones at the walkway entrance, the one to the left reading, "To Chip and Lei, together once more" and the one to the right reading, "Palindrome can now play with butterflies for eternity".
((End, I created a story to detail who Basil was, why he had the wish he did, and how he got his wish, thanks for your time and good luck))
