Firelight! When they first met Dinari was not at all interested in having any kind of relationship with the pushy mare. She seemed to believe that 'fate had thrown them together' but Dinari decided immediately that she was just a immature with a few screws loose. He was young himself but attractive and well liked by many horses older than himself. He was generally more on the serious side and often seemed older than he really was. But, he had clumsy moments, and if it weren't for that, he never would have met Firelight.
It all happened like this . . .
He was walking along, minding his own business when he tripped. He still hasn't figured out exactly how he tripped, or even what he tripped on, but he stumbled into a slender, young pintaloosa mare with such force that she fell. Then he fell. He scrambled to his hooves hurriedly, apologizing profusely the whole way. It was then that he realized she was a stable horse who lived with the humans, The mare had stood up quickly, reassuring him the whole way that she was fine. Dinari apologized once more with less feeling then began to walk away. The mare however followed him. After a moment he stopped walking and asked her why she was following him. She said that he had forgotten to give her his name. Dinari replied that it must have slipped his mind, and introduced himself politely before saying that now that she knew his name he would be going on his way. The mare, not to be deterred, introduced herself as Firelight and said that she was very happy to meet him. Dinari had nodded, said the polite things one was supposed to upon meeting someone else, then kept walking, thinking that was the end of it.
But the next day Firelight was back. She found him grazing and began to chat with him, not seeming to realize that he really wished she would just leave. No matter how much Dinari 'hinted' at her leaving she refused to be brushed away.
However, Dinari found her nothing more than annoying and made a few assumptions about her that were later proved wrong.
It wasn't until his clumsiness got him in trouble again that he and Firelight became friends.
He had gone for a walk in the woods by himself and wasn't paying attention to where he was going. he tripped on a root and slid down a steep hill, getting pretty bruised and cut on the way down. When he got to the bottom of the hill he tried to stand and found that he had twisted his leg badly. He tried several times to get back up the hill but couldn't do it on three legs, and a wide stream prevented him from going the other way. For what seemed like forever he stayed at the bottom of the hill. As night fell he heard wolves in the distance and shivered, both from cold and fear. Then he heard something coming down the hill and tried to stand with no success. Then her heard Firelight's voice calling his name and sounding worried. For once he was thankful she had followed him. He spoke shakily, saying her name. Firelight found him in the dark and leaned down to check his leg. She said there was no way he could travel, and no way she could go back to the stable or find the herd in the dark to get help. Dinari was shivering so Firelight lowered herself onto the ground near him and spoke softly to reassure him. The whole night long she stayed with him and they ended up talking and getting to know each other. He found that she wasn't nearly as ditzy or naive as he had thought. And she was certainly brave to stay with him with wolves out in the woods and a curtain of darkness over the woods. In the morning the humans came looking for Firelight and found them at the bottom of the hill. They took them back up to the stable after wrapping his leg and Dinari had to stay there for a few days until it was better. When it was time for him to leave he found himself reluctant to leave Firelight who had grown on him in the last few days.
When she came down to the fields again he was happy to see her and they talked some more and in time became very good friends.
Now they are practically inseparable.
