The two rogues
Asaki and I decided to cut through the desert to find the nearest route to the village. Asaki told me that he had a ruby he wanted to sell to the merchant over there, so I decided to help him out. I wasn’t sure about Asaki’s intentions, since he loved the ruby all too much. Plus, the desert was our biggest weakness.
Halfway through our journey, our worst fear had come alive. We were both too tired, hot, and thirsty to go on. An hour slowly dragged by and I felt as if my throat was going to crack from dryness.
“Konai, look!” Asaki yelled, his eyes stared at the sand straight ahead. I squinted. It couldn’t be, it was almost too good to be true.
“Water!” I answered excitedly. Before I could react, Asaki bolted ahead. I trailed after until I felt a sudden nagging in my gut. Something felt... Very off. The water seemed to disappear as I got closer, and it was strange how water floated on dry sand like that... Didn’t I read somewhere about water illusions in the desert? Oh no-
“Asaki! Stop!” I yelled, my heart was beating. I didn’t want him to be let down by this.
“Help me! Please!” A desperate voice rang out. His voice rang out for a second time and I spotted him, half his body was lodged in the wet sand. Asaki had fallen into quicksand. I reached out and pulled him, but to no avail, he was sinking further and further into the ground. Asaki reached out and placed a small package in my hand before the sand devoured him. I cried for days on before opening the small package. In my palms sat a ruby, red like the desert sunset.
