Sima's Name:
Marisol

Sima's Gender:
Female

Sima's Age:
Seven

Adoptive parent(s):
Xavier (28)
What's this little fella's favorite activity in Summer?

Marisol loves gardening. She brings a potted fibrous rooted begonia with her to the orphanage.
When she moves in with Xavier, he helps her fill her room with plants and add to the two he
keeps in the apartment. She keeps fibrous begonias, royal geraniums, English ivy, agave,
jasmine, a Christmas cactus, and dieffenbachia in her room. In the living room she put a
corn plant dracena, a jade plant, impatiens, and a boston fern in addition to the aloe plant
and African violets Xavier already kept there. She also made Xavier a small hanging herb
garden for the kitchen. Marisol also loves to skateboard. Her friends in her neighborhood
growing up taught her how. She put Hello Kitty and star stickers on her skateboard. Her first
board was a small, torpedo shaped kid’s board that was black with purple wheels. So, when she
turned eight, Xavier bought her a big kid’s skateboard that had lots of colorful tropical flowers
on the bottom.

Interview with the parents:

Dove: Why do you want to adopt this child?

Xavier: I love working with kids at the youth center I volunteer at. I want to open my home to a child in need. Marisol seems like such a sweet child, but she also seemed shy and scared of the world. I’d love to be the person that helps her grow to be the confident child I know she’ll be and provide a place for her to be happy.

Dove: Have you had experience with raising a child?

Xavier: I have not had a child. I did babysit when I was a teenager. I also volunteer at the local LGBTQ+ youth center as a sort of counselor/big brother. There I work with kids of many ages, our youngest child is eight and our oldest are high school seniors and some college students.

Dove: What is your home environment like right now? Is it a safe environment to raise a child?

Xavier: I live in an apartment in the city. It’s a pretty safe neighborhood and the building is secure and well maintained. My apartment has two bedrooms, a bathroom, living room, kitchen, and laundry room and I keep the apartment clean. I get off work at five so I can always be home in the evenings when she is. The living room is pretty large so we could spend time there together doing separate things or doing something together.

Dove: What are your hobbies?

Xavier: I bike a lot. I also play D and D at the comic shop a few weekends a month and some week nights. I’d probably cut back on visiting the comic shop a little, just so I can spend enough time at home and available for the child. They would of course be welcome to join me in both those things. The comic shop has lots of things for kids to do and look at and read.

Dove: Do you have a partner currently? Were you married/divorced?

Xavier: I was not married or divorced. I have gone on a few dates recently but I’m not serious with any of them, so no partner right now.

Dove: How will you manage dating and raising a child?

Xavier: I wouldn’t go on so many in person dates. I’d probably stick to texting or calling them for the most part. When I go on dates, probably once every two weeks at most, probably less than that, I’d get a babysitter to watch the child. There are some good teens in my building who I’d trust to watch a child, one of my neighbors is also home a lot and they could be there if there was an emergency. I could also hire a babysitter from a reputed service. I wouldn’t let any of my dates meet the child unless they were getting more serious.

Dove: What would you do if you introduced a serious partner to the child and she reacted badly? What if the partner reacts badly?

Xavier: I would be open with the child about me dating, I would never hide that from her. If things started getting more serious I’d tell her more about them. I’d tell her she might meet them sometime. Before they meet to face I’d tell her he would be coming over in a few nights to meet her, and that we’d probably do something like go out for ice cream. If she was reacting badly to this I’d ask her to talk to me about what was bothering her. I’d make sure she knew that I’d always love her and that she comes first for me. I’d also make her understand that I should be allowed to make new friends, just as I will support her making friends with people that enrich her life and make her happy. As for the partner, I’d always be upfront with him as well. I’d never continue seeing someone who says they can’t accept my child in our life. If they reacted badly to meeting her, I’d tell them they’d need to find a way to accept and care about my child because we’d be a package deal. I wouldn’t let someone have a big part in our lives unless they could give her all the unconditional love she deserves. If they still couldn’t love her, I’d tell them it would not work out between us and end it right there.

Dove: Do you have any pets, and how would they behave with kids if you do?

Xavier: I don’t currently have any pets so that shouldn’t be a problem.

Dove: How would you react if the child wanted a pet?

Xavier: I’d first make sure she has considered the responsibility and work involved with keeping a pet. I’d of course take care of them if she wasn’t, but if she wanted a pet I’d like her to learn to take responsibility for them. I’d also make sure we both knew everything involved in caring for the kind of pet she wanted. There’s a pretty good library we could go to and we could always do research online. It she wanted an animal like a hamster or a bird, I’d tell her we could go to the pet store the at the next convenient time. If she wanted a dog, I’d have to look into the restrictions our building has. Large dogs might not be an option. If she wanted a dog or cat I’d take her to the local shelters to adopt one.

Dove: How do you resolve conflict?

Xavier: If the argument got really heated, I usually need to take a minute to compose my thoughts and calm down. Sometimes I write out a few of my points on a piece of paper. Then I go back and talk things out with the person. I don’t like shouting or saying nasty things to people I care about, and I don’t like it when people I care about do that to me. If it was someone being rude or bigoted on the street or in a store, I will sometimes snap back at them and then leave a quickly as possible. I usually don’t snap at them though, only if they’re being particularly offensive. Usually, I will tell them what they said is simply not true, or that they’re being rude, homophobic, etc. Then I leave.

Dove: How would you discipline a child?

Xavier: It can vary depending on why I’m disciplining them. If she got into an argument with me or someone else, I’d ask her to take a few minutes to breathe and get her thoughts in order, and then we would sit down and have a conversation to try and resolve the conflict, or at least share our opinions. If she stole something or damaged someone’s property, like her school’s, I’d make her confess to the person, return the object if she stole something, and apologize. If she caused serious damage I might make her offer to help clean it up or pay for it. If she didn’t do babysitting or something, I’d have her do chores for me around the house. If she got into a fight at school, I’d tell her to apologize and then wouldn’t be able to leave the house in the evenings for a few days or a week. If she complained about the punishment the school gave her, I’d tell her that she needs to accept the punishment because it would be a consequence of her actions, and that she should think about the consequences of what she does next time. I’d of course make sure the school was being reasonable first, though. I’d talk to the school myself if they were punishing my child unreasonably.

Dove: How would you handle a situation where the child is throwing a tantrum?

Xavier: If it were at home I’d tell her to go to her room for a bit to calm down. When she’s ready to talk instead of throw a fit, I’ll be there to listen. If were were out and about, I’d tell her she needs to start calming down or we would go right home.

Dove: How would you handle any special needs the child might develop? Like a learning disability or mental illness?

Xavier: I would talk to a doctor or counselor or specialist. I’d make sure she’s gotten a full exam or diagnosis so we know as much as we can. Then I’d get her whatever help she needs, whether that’s a helper during school, a tutor, and/or a good therapist. Therapists are great. I’d probably always keep a few professionals’ numbers on hand in case she ever wants to talk to one. I’m good at listening and helping people deal with issues, that’s part of my job at the LGBTQ+ youth center, but if she doesn’t want to share with me, she should have someone she can talk to. I’d also do as much research as I can for both of us, so she knows what she can expect and I know how to help her. I would also look into different kind of support groups so she could talk to people going through the same thing as her, and I could get help and advice from other parents.

Relationship with parents/family:
Mother

Marisol’s mother raised her alone. She had not planned to have a baby and did not want to involve a stranger in her child’s life. So she worked long hours at the ER to make enough money to provide for them both. Marisol learned to cook when she was four, just simple things at first, and from then on always cooked dinner. If her mom got home before 5:30, they’d cook together. Her mom always made breakfast for the two of them, even on the days she had to be at work before Marisol woke up. On those days she’d leave little post it notes for Marisol, saying things like “Love you” and “Have a good day, Sunshine." Marisol loved her mom a lot, and she loved her. Her mother was killed by a drunk driver when she was driving home from work. Marisol wasn’t worried at first. It wasn’t unheard of for her mom to be held up at the ER for a few hours. When it turned nine o’clock she started to worry, her mom would have called if she was needed at the ER overnight. If she was scheduled to work the night shift, she would call in the evening to check up on Marisol. She called her mother’s cellphone and then called the ER when she didn’t pick up. Her mother’s coworker told Marisol she’d left hours ago. At this point Marisol was scared, so she went to her neighbor’s apartment and they called the police together. That’s when she found out her mother had died. The next day child services arrived and brought her to Dove’s orphanage.

Xavier

Marisol comes to trust and adore Xavier. She loves her new dad and she knows that having a new parent doesn’t have to mean replacing her previous one. And that Xavier would never ask her to. She has a really great relationship with her dad. When she was first adopted, Marisol was a little because she was scared it wouldn’t be permanent. She was scared that Xavier might send her back or disappear from her life like her mother did. She kept her suitcase in her room instead of putting it away in a closet for this reason. It was months before she finally took her suitcase out of her room. Marisol knows Xavier will support her and encourage her no matter what. They also have the kind of relationship where they talk about things like sexual orientation and it’s not treated as uncomfortable or taboo. Xavier loves to hang out with his daughter and Marisol loves that she gets to spend so much time with her dad. They go bike riding around the city a lot and take walks in the parks. There’s also a summer music festival in the park that they love to go to each year. They also watch the news together each night before bed, and My Cat from Hell on the weekends.

Theme Song:
“Home”
by Phillip Phillips
*listen*
This song conveys the environment Xavier created in their home. Xavier did his best to make sure Marisol felt comfortable and settle in the home. He made sure she knew it was “their” home, not “Xavier’s” home. He did everything he could to make Marisol feel loved and safe, and she responded well to that. She was able to come out of her reserved shell and trust again. She no longer fears that the ground will be pulled out from under her at any minute, and all she’s come to love taken away. She’s not naive, she knows life can change drastically in just the blink of an eye. But she moves through the world with confidence and optimism, because she knows Xavier is there to cheer her on and support and love her.
“You”
by Robin Stjernberg
*listen*
This song shows how Marisol feels about her dad. She loves Xavier to pieces. He made her feel welcomed and cared for when he adopted her. He didn’t try to make her forget her past. He encouraged her to talk with him about her memories of her mother and her old neighborhood. He encouraged her to stay in touch with her friends as best she could and drove her to their houses many times for playdates, and told her she could invite them over just as often. He didn’t make her ignore her Mexican heritage either. From the moment he knew she was coming to live with him, he began to learn Spanish so she could speak in whichever language was comfortable for her and still be understood. He even got recipes for her favorite Mexican foods she grew up with.
“Unwritten”
by Natasha Bedigfield
*watch and listen*
This song is Marisol’s theme because she has the same nature of optimism and strength as the song. She’s determined to live life to it’s fullest. To live with enthusiasm and love with her whole heart. She doesn’t know where life will take her, she doesn’t know what she’ll grow up to be, but she’s determined to create a happy future for herself. This song, especially the music video, isn’t all unicorns and rainbows, ignoring the bad parts of life. This song gives the message that life is worth living despite it all. And that people should fight for the things they really want out of life. And that’s just the kind of person Marisol grows up to be.

Story:
First Night

Xavier

Xavier was so excited he couldn’t sleep. It was 11:30 and he was still lying in his bed and staring at the ceiling. Tomorrow he would go the the orphanage to pick up his daughter. He’d been so excited when he got the call from Dove, he’d been preparing what felt like non-stop for a week. He’d cleaned the apartment, gotten some last minute things for her room, stocked the bathroom with extra tooth paste, tooth brushes, shampoos, and soap, and picked up some snacks at the store. The girl was fluent in both Spanish and English, so Xavier had downloaded some Spanish songs and podcasts and gone to his first Spanish class in the three month program he signed up for. He didn’t know much Spanish, but he was determined to learn for his daughter’s sake. He was so excited. He really hoped she’d like it here. Xavier rolled over and tried for the umpteenth time to go to sleep. Tomorrow he’d bring Marisol into her new home.

Tuesday morning Xavier woke and went to work. He’d arranged to work half the day so he could get to his appointment at the orphanage at two. At 1:15 he was driving to Dove’s orphanage. When he arrived, he was led into Dove’s office where they went over a few things again. She also explained that the adoption would not be finalized for seven months, just to make sure that everything would work out.

“Okay, that’s all,” Dove said. “Let’s go out right this way, Xavier, Marisol is waiting over here.”

Dove led Xavier into a small conference room. Marisol was sitting in one of the big office chairs, kicking her legs idly, her suitcase and skateboard at her side and a potted plant on the table in front of her. Her eyes kept flicking to the door, and when they walked in, her eyes went to Xavier.

“Marisol, it’s time dear,” Dove said warmly. “Do you remember Xavier?”

Xavier crouched down next to Marisol and extended his paw.

“Hello Marisol. I’m very excited to see you again. I hope you want to come live with me.”

Marisol

Marisol looked at him, her eyes wide. She was still a little in shock, it was finally happening. She’d said her goodbyes that morning, just to her roommate, the nurse, a few of the matrons, and Dove. She’d kept mostly to herself the eight months she’d been here and hadn’t made any close friends. Besides, all her friends were back in her old neighborhood.

She remembered when Xavier had come to the orphanage the first time. He’d met with her in a small sitting room. He’d asked her about her mom, her old home, what her favorite color was, what she liked to do. She’d been hesitant to talk to him at first. She’d answered his questions quietly, and not saying much. But he’d smiled every time and kept talking with her. He told her about his apartment downtown, and how he liked to go bike riding in the evenings. That he played Dungeons and Dragons at the comic shop most weeks. He made her smile, and soon she found herself telling him excitedly about her old neighborhood and learning to skateboard from the older kids.

After a while Marisol had felt the tears rolling down her cheeks. She’d turned away, scared to let anyone see her grief, especially someone she’d just met. But then a tissue was being offered to her. She turned her head slightly and saw Xavier’s kind eyes. He didn’t speak, as she took the tissue, just put his paw on her shoulder.

Now, she looked at Xavier’s outstretched paw and took it.

He took her to his car in the orphanage’s parking lot and lifted her suitcase and skateboard into the trunk. She buckled up in the backseat, plant in her lap. Xavier drove off while the radio softly played. Every now and then he’d talk about a place they passed. This place serves good food, that cafe is fun to people watch, we can bike there from the apartment, this place is within walking distance. They came up to an eight story brick and concrete apartment building and Xavier pulled into the lot. He got out of the car and pulled open her door.

“You ready?” He asked, extending his paw, encouraging smile on his face.

Marisol unbuckled her seat belt and put her plant in the crook of her arm. Then, she took his hand and stepped out of the car. He got her skateboard and suitcase out of the trunk, he carried her skateboard and she pulled her suitcase into the building when he unlocked it. They got in the elevator and he pushed the button for the third floor. When the doors opened, he led her to the left. He stopped to unlock a door on their right, unit 18.

“This is home Marisol. I hope you’ll like it here with me.”

She stepped over the threshold and let her eyes roam the space. The living room was in front of her. It was open and there were two large windows that let in a lot of light. That was good for the two potted plants she could see. The kitchen was to her right, the bar and two stools designating the area. A little ahead and to her left there was a hallway that Xavier led her into. There was a closet and a bathroom on the left, and two doors on the right. Xavier turned into the first of them and turned on the light.

“This is your room. I got you come furniture, but I didn’t get much else ‘cause I didn’t know what you’d like.” He bent down and propped her skateboard up against the wall.

Marisol liked it. There was a bed in the corner and a desk under the window, and a bookshelf along the wall. Behind the door there was a dresser, too. She hadn’t had her own space since she got to Dove’s orphanage. She’d shared a room a little smaller than this with another girl there, and she hadn’t liked it much. When she lived with her mom she’d had a small room as well, but it was her own, and it was peaceful. She turned around and smiled at Xavier where he was leaning against the door frame.

“I like it,” she said softly, ” Thank you.”

“No problem kid,” he said easily. “How about I let you get settled for a bit? When you’re done I can show you around the apartment and then we can make dinner. And if you’re up for it, tomorrow we can go to the store and get some more things for your room. Sound good?”

“Yeah. I’d like that.”

“Okay. I’ll be in the living room when you’re done.”

He left and she turned to examine her room again. She really did like it. She set her begonia on the desk and sat on her bed. The comforter was soft, with light blue with large colorful birds and flowers on it. x The sheets were pastel lavender. Marisol got up and opened her suitcase.

There weren’t too many things in her suitcase besides her clothes. She and her mother didn’t have a lot of extra belongings in the first place. Then, when she’d left for Dove’s orphanage, she hadn’t been able to bring most of her mother’s belongings. She’d grabbed the three framed family photos her mom had hung in the apartment, as well as the box of pictures she’d kept in her room. She also had a couple journals, a stuffed cat, and a the quilt her mom made for her. She’d put her helmet and knee and elbow pads in the middle of everything. The social workers had grabbed her birth certificate and other papers and given them to Dove. Marisol put her clothes in the dresser and her journals and pictures on the desk. She threw her kitty and blanket on the bed. She set her toothbrush and toothpaste on top of the dresser for later and put all her skateboarding things in a pile next to the door. She stood her suitcase up against the dresser.

With one last look at everything, she walked back out to the main room of the apartment. There she found Xavier curled up on the couch with a book, a romance by the look of it. Marisol paused for a second, unsure.

“Hey,” she said, voice squeaking just slightly.

“Oh, hey Marisol,” Xavier said, closing his book and setting it on the side table. “Ready for the tour?”

She nodded.

“Okay, follow me then. This is living room, as you can tell. I use the desk for work sometimes but feel free to use it. Over here is the kitchen.”

Marisol followed him between the dividing wall and the counter. The kitchen was open and the lights glowed warmly overhead.

“There’s no dishwasher so just put any dirty dishes in the sink,” Xavier explained. “Through here,” he said, turning and sliding open a door at the back of the kitchen, “is the washer and dryer. We can do laundry on Sunday. Do you know how to do laundry on your own? Or do you usually have help?”

“I know how to do laundry.” Her mom had just taught her how last year.

“Okay. Well we can figure out laundry more on Sunday.”

Xavier led her back through the living room and into the hallway.

“This is the closet.” He pointed out a folding door at the mouth of the hallway. “You can put your suitcase in here.” He walked to the next door on the left and turned on the lights. “This is the bathroom obviously. There’s extra shampoo and toothpaste in the cupboard. Towels and toilet paper are in the cabinet by the toilet. There’s hooks on the wall for wet towels.” He stepped out of the bathroom and turned off the lights. “That’s a closet at the end of the hall, there are extra blankets in there as well. And then my room is right next to yours. And that’s it. Are you hungry for dinner?”

Marisol nodded and led the way back to the kitchen. She went to the sink to wash her hands as Xavier started rummaging in the pantry.

“Hmm. I’ve got the things for salad and tomato soup or quesadillas, Which would you like?”

“Quesadillas.”

“Okay. How about you start cutting up some cherry tomatoes and red union, and I’ll start the quesadillas? Tomatoes and onions are on the third shelf, right side.”

Marisol grabbed the carton of cherry tomatoes and the half cut up onion. When she turned around, Xavier had pulled out a cutting board and small knife and set them up on the bar for her. While she sliced the vegetables, Xavier got out a foil lined cooking sheet and set it beside her on the counter. He put down two flour tortillas and spread vegetable oil onthem. He then pulled out a bag of cheddar cheese and a jar of cilantro.

“Slide the onion over here. We can each put together our own. I also have corn in the pantry if you want to add that.”

“This is fine.” She didn’t want to be a hassle.

They stood side by side in companionable silence and spread toppings on their tortillas,

Xavier covered their tortillas with another and stuck them in the oven. They mixed the salad while they waited to turn the tortillas. Xavier pulled the tortillas out while she put away the extra ingredients.

“Just put the stuff in the sink. I’ll wash them after dinner.”

Marisol dropped the cutting board and utensils in the sink. Then she got out plates, cups, and silverware with Xavier’s directions as he pulled out sour cream and salsa. Xavier plated their tortillas and she brought hers over to the kitchen table. Xavier poured milk for both of them and then sat across from her at the little table.

They ate and talked about different things. Xavier told her about what had been going on at work that week, and things he’d seen when biking in the park recently. She told him about how her stay at the orphanage had been and what she’d done with her friends the two times she’d been able to hang out with them since moving.

“Well, it’s not late yet. What do you say to watching a movie before bed?”

“Sure,” she said with a shrug.

“Hmm,” he said, giving her an appraising look. “I’ve got this great movie called Spirited Away. It’s wonderful, and I think you might like it.”

Marisol made her way to the living room while Xavier put their dishes away. She sat on the couch and watched as he dug the DVD out of the cabinet and popped it in the player. He sat down in the middle of the couch as the previews played. Xavier pressed play for the movie.

Marisol shifted as Chihiro talked unhappily about having to say goodbye to her friends. She watched with bated breath as Chihiro tried in vain to make her parents leave, and then look on, fearfully, as they turned into pigs. The movie was amazing. Marisol loved Chihiro. She loved how Chihiro found the courage to search for answers to her parent’s problem in the spirit world. She loved how Chihiro cared for the friends she made. She was sad to see the credits come on screen. Xavier got up to turn on the lights, and then sat back down on the couch.

“Did you like the movie?”

“It was amazing! The spirit world was so cool! Chihiro was really brave. I liked her. And she freed her parents in the end!”

“Ha ha. It is a pretty great movie. I like No Face myself. I think he’s really interesting. He just wanted to repay Chihiro’s kindness. I think he’s really sweet.”

“He was kind of scary, though, when he went crazy and started eating people.”

“Yeah he was. He sure didn’t do well at the bath house. It’s 7:40 now. How about we get you to bed, Marisol? It’s been a long day for you.”

She nodded.

“Okay. Remember to brush your teeth.”

Marisol got her toothbrush and toothpaste from her dresser and went into the bathroom. She filled the plastic cup she found on the counter with water and started brushing her teeth. Xavier had disappeared into his bedroom and now knocked on the door frame. He was now wearing pajama pants and a night shirt.

“I’m going to wash the dishes while you finish getting ready for bed. Okay, Marisol?”

She nodded. When she had spat and rinsed her mouth, she began scanning the bathroom. Xavier’s toothbrush and things were piled next to the cupboard, so she put her things in the corner closer to the door. She finished using the bathroom and went into her bedroom. She closed the door and put on her strawberry print pajama pants and her rockstar princess shirt. She’d never liked nightgowns. She turned out the lights and crawled under her covers. She spread her quilt on top of the blankets and pulled her kitty to her chest. She let her mind wander in the darkness.

She didn’t expect the light knock at her door. Then Xavier opened it and poked his head around.

“Good, you’re still awake, Marisol.” He walked into her room and pulled her blanket up around her. “Goodnight Marisol,” he said. “I’m right next door if you need anything. Don’t worry about waking me up.” He squeezed her shoulder, he glanced at her curtains, and then left her room, quietly closing her door.

Marisol sank deeper under her blankets. With one last survey of her room, Marisol closed her eyes and fell asleep.

Would it be possible to get a short extension of just a few days or so? I've been meaning to add more to my form, but I've been caught up the last few days and I haven't had the chance.

okay, i believe there were only two finished forms, so i went off of those. vuv

it was a really, REALLY difficult decision, honestly. ;D;' i loved both wucaian and Fairy King's forms with all my heart, the personalities and relationships were heartwarming, and the interviews were perfect. although, i can only pick one winner for this kit....and i am fairly certain that i have come down to a winner. i feel really sad for having to pick between you two oml, save my heart you guys tried so hard and did so well..

please give a warm congrats to wucaian!
i think the story was the tie breaker, it gave a lot of insight on the kit's personality and past and how she deals with it now. and honestly, i love Spirited Away oml. excellent movie choice, good job Xavier.

otherwise, everything else between you and Fairy King's form matched up extremely well and this is what made it so hard to pick. because i know you both put a lot of effort into your forms, i don't want either of you to leave the competition empty handed.

i want to offer a runner up to Fairy King! honestly i fell in love with her hobby and i ADORED the relationship between her and her parents! ahh, if you're interested, you can message me on skype the color palette and a design suggestion you want to see! of course, i'll be hosting a join me during it, so you'll be able to watch when i have the time.

thank you guys for participating, and good luck in future competitions! you both have thick potential and i am sure you will do well the next time you try for an orphan.
