Pulling carts? Yeah, sure. She’ll do it. So long as food is involved.

Nane means food as a visible motivator too; she will not move unless her gaze lands on food. Her handlers scratched their heads until they could find a reasonable way to get the food in her field of vision without letting her at it long enough for her to eat and then get disinterested. This is where Tano comes in.

They strap a small bag of feed (and sometimes a carrot or two) to Tano’s side to entice the mare to follow Tano’s lead. Reliable as always and far more diligent, Tano’s willing to play along and lead Nane to their destination. He doesn’t mind; he finds it amusing more than anything else, and since Nane is smart enough to respect his space, he’s willing to let her follow him without getting restless. He sees it as a good trade too. Being smaller than her, he’s usually not the one to carry the load unless it’s a big one. When that happens they simply strap him to the front so Nane is still following him. Their handlers think Nane somewhat equates Tano to food now. It’s hilarious to see her break out into a canter whenever Tano trots by her field of vision at any time of the day.

They seem to be good friends anyway. Tano’s known to lead her to good grazing spots when they’re not working.
