Memory: The sharp scent of the ocean flooded Pearl's open muzzle. She closed her eyes as she felt the slight breeze of the wind and listened to the soothing scent of waves crashing on the sand. Digging her toes into the sand, she wiggled them slightly. She felt fur brush her side and when she opened her eyes, her brother was looking at her with a shell in his muzzle. He dropped it at her paws and smiled, a kind look reflecting in his golden eyes. She looked at the intricately swirled pink and white curled shell. "It's beautiful!" She squealed, turning it over with her foot. She pushed it back with her nose to keep the ocean from dragging it into its turbulent current. The young she-cat glanced longingly at the water then she looked back at her brother. "We should go swimming today." She meowed.
"For the first time?" His head tilted slightly before he shrugged and nudging her gently. "Go on then. I'll stay on the shore if you need me." Shell murmured. The enthusiastic she-cat bounded off, kicking sand in her wake as she darted into the ocean with a fluffed pelt. The water lapped at her paws and quickly her stomach making her giggle with glee. As a wave rushed over her head and swallowed her, she remembered her mother's lessons; don't fight the ocean, swim with it. She pumped her paws in the direction of the wave, stunned at how naturally it came to her. When she resurfaced, she was surprised to see her brother's familiar muzzle sticking up out of the water.
"What are you doing out here?" She called over the sounds of the ocean, still kicking her paws to stay afloat.
"I thought you were drowning!" Shell told her, his laughter filling her ears with joy.
"You have such little faith in me!" She feigned pain and stuck her tongue out at him. She swam toward the shore so that she could stand yet still be in the water. "I love the water," Pearl told her brother.
"I know you do." He smiled at her, nudging her cheek with his wet forehead. "It's our home, after all,"
"Our home." She repeated, closing her eyes and tilting her chin toward the shining sun.
