“i promise i’m fine, mom.” she smiled. her mother’s genuine concern for her anxiety made her feel temporarily relaxed, despite the eerie silence of an empty house. it had only been five minutes—she checked the clock constantly, and noted every passing second—and yet, she was already starting to feel her insides twisting with nerves. she had called her mother on accident, though she had really planned to call her anyway, just as a distraction from the walls closing in on her and the creaking floorboards. it was better to have noise, though, noise could also cover up the sound of an approaching intruder, and madeline couldn’t bear the thought of—

“can i order pizza?” she nearly blurted the words out. she needed to fill the silence of the hallway, and ignore the racing thoughts in her head. maybe it was the continuous dripping of the faucet in the kitchen, or the whirring of the ice maker, or the movement she saw in the corner of her eye, which disappeared all too quickly when she turned her head—it was all too much for her to handle.

she couldn’t focus. her heart was racing in her chest, a constant thumpthumpthump blocking out her own thoughts with its loudness. her paws had begun to twitch with every step, and the room had started to spin. she covered her eyes with one paw as she reached for the curtains. she nearly screamed as she pushed them aside and—
