Viscet #1808 — Misplaced Winner

Postby Macyduke » Wed Sep 06, 2017 3:29 pm

Super stoked to be a ga and be apart of the viscet team this month. I'm not sure how they ended up the way it did, but I'm pretty sure they set up halloween decorations early. I could be wrong though.

Anyways, to win this cet, tell me a short story about them. It could be about anything from looking for a toothpick to dealing with the common cold. The only thing I'm really looking for is their character. Creativity, originality, and character development is a plus.

    Name - Raven
    Gender - female
    Personality -
      Raven tends to stick to the shadows and doesn't often converse with anyone. She's anti-social to an extent or at least that's how she appears. This is mostly because she's had a few traumatic experiences that make her a bit more wary of socializing, at least, initially. However, she can actually be quite social or talkative in certain situations but those situations vary greatly. So to most, Raven just appears to be a peculiar and quiet type that has a rather unfortunate knack for getting into trouble. Few really understand just how social she can be, most people just don't understand how she gets into these types of predicaments. The few that know her-- know her well-- understand exactly why;

      Her mouth.

Raven suffers from lack of a filter. What does that mean exactly? Well, it means simply that she speaks before she thinks. Whatever comes to her mind immediately comes out her mouth. Whether it's something kind or downright rude, if it's her first opinion or thought on the matter it's being said. Due to this particularly big flaw, she tends to avoid socializing or talking much with strangers as she has been known to offend quite easily. She's had this issue since she was a child and paired with her sometimes cynical sense of humor it makes it quite hard to make many friends that stick.
      (228 / 400 words)
Why are they trying not to laugh? -
Raven is stifling a laugh because of the predicament she has gotten herself into. This isn't a rare occurrence by any means but this time it's gotten her into quite a bit of trouble. Still, her cynical sense of humor has kicked in once more and she's struggling to keep from bursting out cackling which would make her current situation all the worse.

Raven is rarely seen without some form of a grin or smirk when she's expressing herself. She's always got a comment or snide remark to make about just about everything. She throws her opinions and thoughts right out into the open whether they are warranted or not. She never feels the need to hide her thoughts, feelings or emotions. She's got quite the sense of humor which makes just about everything amusing to her. It doesn't matter how inappropriate, uncalled for or terrible a situation is, she'll be standing there tickled to death at the situation.

This particular situation started like any typical day in the city. Raven had only recently come to this busy and noisy city but even in just the short couple months she had resided her, she already had developed a daily routine. It was a city full of problems of the everyday person and viscet. There were those who worked hard for a living, those who thrived and those who struggled but it was also full of those dishonestly living. Those who stole from others, committed crimes or blatantly disregarded the laws. Raven didn't consider herself to be one of those people but she didn't earn her living all that honest either. She didn't work for a living like most viscets did in this city to their human counterparts, but she didn't make a habit of stealing either. At least not unless the occasion called for it that is. She did what she had to, getting by relatively easily even though she didn't do much in the way of contributing to the city. Her day to day life mostly kept her lurking in the alleyways and strolling through the less traveled parts of town. It was easier that way, she caused less trouble that way and there was always fewer people to cross paths with this way.

This day was much like any other, at least at first it was. Raven was walking along the quieter part of town when she saw two viscets she didn't recognize. She flicked her tail some but kept walking, she didn't have any intentions to stop and chat with strangers. She looked ahead, past the two as she kept walking. Her ears swiveled some as she began to pick up some idle chatter between the two males. The two were just talking, both were larger viscets but their posture and tones were casual as they continued down the road. Raven went to turn her ears forward again when she picked up one of the males saying a particularly stupid remark. The remark referring to the female who had just walked by, a flirtatious comment, an almost catcall of sorts just more as a comment to the other male.

Raven stiffened, turning her head back quickly at the two before snapping, "Maybe you should keep your eyes to yourself." Her remark stopped both males. The darker of the two looking back apologetically for the other but the one who had said it just turned back and grinned a bit. That only served to ruffle Raven's fur. How dare he look so smug. She gave a snort, "Wipe that grin off your ugly face before I remove myself." The once grinning male raised an eyebrow at her, not convinced she would actually keep to that. He tested her as he turned and stepped towards her, walking up to stand paw to paw with her. He grinned down at her, his hulking size towering over her but she didn't even flinch. She frowned, annoyed all the more.

"Dominic, let's just go. We have a patrol." The other male called to the large male who was antagonizing Raven.

Dominic smirked a little, "In a moment, Jedrek." He kept his green eyes trained on Raven, "I'm waiting."

Raven's fur raised all the more, he was far too tall for her to reach up and strike. How infuriating! She twitched an ear as a thought occurred to her. She grinned in return now and in one quick movement, she swung herself around, lashing her tail upward. The painful smack came as Raven's tail snapped across Dominic's face. The movement had been so fast it had stunned the male but Raven turned to grin back, "Satisfied?" She smirked before turning to start trotting off, satisfied with herself. She chuckled beneath her breath, not thinking for a moment that any repercussions would come of this. She had made her point and slapped the smug off his face. Dominic huh? That name sounds familiar. She didn't have a lot of time to contemplate that before Dominic snapped out of shock.

Raven swiveled an ear when she heard something but she didn't have the time to react as the much larger male jumped her. He pinned her roughly to the ground, "You think you're cute don'tcha?" He snorted, obviously angered by how she had treated him.

"As a matter of fact, I know I am. I mean you said so yourself not but moments ago." Raven replied, her amusement obvious even aside from the strain from being pinned so roughly.

Jedrek was quickly running over, "Dom, let her up!" He flattened his ears as Dominic didn't budge but instead growled lowly.

"What did I hurt your feelings?" Raven almost snickered, patronizing Dominic a bit. It didn't help her situation any, but she had to admit she was beginning to find this funny.

Dominic's low growl continued, "You really don't understand the predicament you're in do you?" He snorted a little at that, "You have no idea who you're even talking to I'd bet. Newcomers and their blatant disregard for the order and way of things."

Jedrek watched them, sighing a little, "Dom, we need to go. We have someone to deal with still don't we?" He was trying to get Raven off the hook but after a moment he grew silent. He had noticed something and was now regretting bringing it up.

"You mean that troublemaker that we were sent out here to find?" Dominic questioned, giving a bit of a smirk. "I believe we found her easier than anticipated. So you're the little nuisance that we've been sent to deal with, suppose this makes dealing with you much easier doesn't it?"

Raven was confused by all that but when it all began to come together it slowly began to dawn on her. Dominic and Jedrek. They're two of members of that local gang aren't they? No, I'm certain of it. She began to feel her wanting to chuckle. It was slow at first and she stifled that, but the more she thought about it, she more she realized exactly how much trouble she was in. Oh man, I just walloped one of the higher ups didn't I? There were tears beginning to form in her eyes as she continued to stifle her laughter. If she burst out cackling now she would only serve to make the situation far worse for herself. These males had been sent out to find her, straighten her up and she and one of the higher ups had gotten into a dispute. And I slapped him. I slapped him hard too! She was trembling trying to resist laughing, both males looking at her oddly at this point. She couldn't breathe as she held back her laughter still but it wouldn't last forever. She was only one more thought from bursting out in a laughing fit.
      (1310 words)
    Short Story -
      "Raven, don't dally."

Raven snapped her attention from what had distracted her, bounding playfully as young viscling do after her mother. "Coming! I'm coming!" She called as she closed the distance between mother and herself.

Her mother glanced back at her and couldn't help but to smile at her, "How are you so full of energy still? We've been walking for hours now."

"I just am." The young viscling replied, not knowing how else to answer. "Besides, this is a new place right? I've not seen any of these plants before. Is it still far?" Raven asked, her eyes full of wonder and curiosity.

"Oh goodness, yes it is still quite a ways but we won't walk the whole way there in one day. We'll stop when it's dark and rest for a while." Her mother replied simply, twitching an ear as she glanced back again before looking back ahead. "But that's not for a while still yet. Hopefully, you'll be tired by then so we can both get plenty of rest." She chuckled softly.

      ------------

By the time evening came a mist had begun to settle throughout the forest. The air cooling substantially clouds were rolling in from the direction the two viscets had been heading. "Momma, is it going to rain?" Raven asked with a tilt of her head. It certainly smelled like rain but the rapidly cooling temperature felt abnormal for a typical rain storm. Raven's mother looked around the area and kept pushing the young viscling along as she searched for shelter from the coming storm. It had started to ran as they searched, the rain started slow but was freezing. Raven shivered but kept close to her mother's side as they hurried through the forest, looking for an empty den or safe area to wait out the storm in. There was a blinding light as lightning danced across the sky, followed by a booming thunderclap directly after. Immediately after a downpour came, soaking the two viscets to the bone in a matter of mere moments.

"Come hurry." The mother ushered her daughter on, picking up her pace just a little but not enough to out stride her young daughter. "Hurry now." She urged more as lightning streaked across the sky. Closer this time than last as the thunder crash resounded sooner and louder. Her mother twitched her ears, she could feel something coming. She feared what was coming, she wasn't certain but it made her fur rise in apprehension. She needed to run, she needed to get them to safety. She quickly ducked down, snatching Raven up in her arms before bolting. "Hold on, baby." She cooed as calmly as she could as she raced through the forest, skirting along the side of it so she risked hitting fewer trees.

The rain turned to painful pellets of ice, coming to downpour for several minutes with the rain. Then there was a loud, unearthly sound that was coming from behind them. Raven struggled, her curiosity getting the best of her as she peered over her mother's shoulder. Her eyes widened as she watched what looked like huge clouds touch the earth, ripping up trees, debris and throwing them around. "Momma! What is that?!" She panicked, fearful of the strong storm clouds that appeared to be chasing them.

"Hold on, baby." There wasn't any shelter that Raven's mother had seen thus far. But as luck would have it, her eyes locked onto a cave. She didn't look back as she picked up her speed, racing against time itself to make it into the safety. She had to for Raven.

    Extras-
    Mini Story 1
There was silence. A deafening, eerie silence now that the storm had passed. It was dark, so very dark. Nothing made a sound, the only thing that Raven could hear was the sound of the blood rushing in her ears. Her heartbeat was all she could hear and it was resounding in her ears. She stood, alone, inside the cave. In complete darkness. She stood to her paws, her head aching as she stood slowly. She was trying to recall what happened or how she got here. The last thing she remembered was the whirling wind cloud. She remembered a loud sound and then darkness.

      "Momma!" The viscling cried.

Still nothing, nothing but the overwhelming sound of her rapidly beating heart. She squinted her eyes, trying to see if she could make out anything but there was nothing in this utter darkness. Nothing but the silence. Raven shivered as she shifted from paw to paw, it was cold in this cavern. She looked around still, hoping to catch a glimpse of her mother or of a way out of this damp, dark cave.

"Is anyone there?" She called out again, more desperate this time than last.

She heard her voice echo back to her and at that moment it was beginning to sink in just how alone she was now. She shivered against the damp air, wishing for the warmth and comfort of her mother's pelt. She lowered her ears as tears began to well up in her eyes. "Momma..." She sniffled as she began to feel her heart sinking into despair. She trembled as she slowly slid to laying on her side on the ground. She didn't know what to do without her mother, she didn't know to get out of this cavern with no obvious way out.
      (299 / 300 words)
    Mini Story 2 -
      What's that sound?

It was muffled but the only thing she knew for certain was that she was being carried. She weakly opened her eyes part of the way, her vision blurry and out of focus. Her head hurt from the light that was streaming in, days in the darkness made the light unbearably bright. Her head throbbed and her body refused to move for her so she whimpered instead.

      Am I dreaming?

Raven shifted weakly, "Momma?" She rasped, hopeful as her body could allow.

The voice was reassuring and Raven knew it had to be her mother. "Just stay still and hang on. Momma's going to take care of you." The voice cooed and smoothed Raven as she dozed back off in her mother's arms.

She awoke sometime later beneath a shade tree. Her mother wasn't there but there were fresh berries laid out for her and a river nearby. She shifted enough to eat a bit before getting up to move to the waterside. She didn't recall much of the past couple days, just glimpses of her mother and eating a small amount of food and drinking lots of water. She looked around slowly, "I'll wait here for momma." She said as she shifted to sit more comfortably by the water's side. She waited there for hours but she never saw any sign of her mother.

A little over a day passed before another viscet came to the clearing. Raven perked her ears as she looked back towards the sound of footsteps. She looked to the viscet, smiling brightly as she jumped up and bounded as best her body would allow. "Momma!" Her mother smiled, meeting her halfway, embracing her. There were tears at first but then slow laughter built, their happiness too much to contain.

    Name - Yolanthe

    Gender - female

Personality - Yolanthe is a Viscet who lives her life just as it comes to her. She doesn't often think about the past or worry about the future, but instead she makes sure to live right here and right now and have no regrets to anything that might happen. She is very carefree and trying to stress her or make her anxious will only result in that person getting exhausted by her sometimes way too positive attitute. Even though she is a grown-up female, she still enjoys life and similar to one of her favourite songs "Ruby Tuesday", she'd come and go as she pleases and would rather change with every new day, then watch the days get boring and lonely. She enjoys adventures, meeting new people and learning something new, so she will never stay for too long at one place, which makes it difficult to stay in close contact with her. But her friends mean everything to her, so even if she was currently at the other end of the world, she would still make sure to call you, write you a letter or send you a postcard. Exceptions arise should she happen to forget your adress or your phone number - and to be honest, with Yolanthe, such things happen quite alot.
What Yolanthe enjoys most in everyday life is certainly pranking others, which is also why Tomasso happens to be her best buddy amongst all the individuals she has already met. But while Tomasso makes sure that with his pranks nobody gets hurt, Yola doesn't care that much about it, as long as she got something to laugh about later. Scary pranks are her favourites - you can bet that she is one of those people you see videos of on YouTube: dressing up as a clown and following people with a chainsaw or make an appearance as the creepy ghost-girl from "The Ring".

Why are they trying not to laugh? - She made a bet with her best buddy Tomasso, that he wouldn't dare to enter an abandoned house, which is said to be haunted. Knowing Tom, he of course did it, but the best part of it is, that she was able to prank him with a simple mechanism and an old clown-doll, that she found at a fleamarket. Now he thinks that house is actually haunted by undead clown-dolls and Yolanthe has a hard time being serious and act as if she believes him.

Short Story - We all have our little secrets and we all do everything to make sure, that nobody will ever see behind it. In order to keep my secret from others, I started to avoid everyone. I started to travel alot, never stay at one place for too long, do everything I could so others would not notice what was wrong with me: I never change. So?, you might ask now, and I see why you would. What's so special about not changing? Many people do that, many people are the same almost their whole life. But I am not talking about who I am - to be fair, that changes every other day. But what I am. I cannot die. I cannot age. Staying away from others is a good way to prevent them from finding out. But someone knows. Tomasso.
    ---
It was a day not so different from others. Rome was a beautiful place, it still is, and Tom has an easy time convincing me to travel with him, when he decides to visit his birthplace, which happens to be mine as well. Rome is full of wonders and miracles, one visit is not enough to realize it's whole beauty. I have been there many times and still, every time I go there, I discover something new.
There is a restaurant where Tomasso and I could be found pretty much every day. We would eat pizza, lasagna, ice cream and more pizza and talk about the day, where we wanted to go next and what we wanted to do. Tomasso had heard about an ancient and abandoned temple, unknown to most, even though it was supposed to lie in the middle of Rome, one of the biggest cities on earth. Of course, he wanted to go there, he always does. Keeping Tom away from anything ancient and supposedly haunted is a task that even I cannot achieve. I agreed to join him, of course. As interested he might be in ancient culture, and everything supernatural, as interested am I. I was excited, having been told some quite interesting stories about the place by Tomasso. So we headed off by nightfall. Night was our time and at night everything was more exciting anyway.
At first glace, the temple seemed to be nothing but a huge disappointment. It was mostly destroyed, nothing left but a ruin - a few stone walls and nothing else. Tomasso, however, discovered a staircase, kept hidden behind a huge rock. It led down into pitch darkness, but that was anything but stopping us. Getting our flashlights ready, we stepped down the stairs, which felt like slowly getting devoured by darkness.
Down below nothing looked particularly extraordinary - well, to be honest the inscriptions of an ancient curse sounded quite interesting, but Tomasso and I were more after something else: ghosts. Well, at least Tom would find one down there, I have to admit that. And he did, when we turned around a corner left and got greeted by something, that awoke memories in me: memories I had long forgotten. Memories that I purposefully had forgotten and wished to forget for all enternity. But there we were: looking at the sight right in front of us, the remaining bones of what used to be two Viscets once. Tomasso, being as curious as always, started to investigate what was left of their belongings right away. And then he found it: my dairy.
"Look at that, Yola! That one Viscet sounds like you - she even got the same name."
"I think I must tell you something, Tom. That Viscet is me."

distant screaming.
    ❥ Username - ~Prophecy~
    ❥ Name - Annika Bates
    ❥ Gender - Female
    ❥ Personality -
Annika tends to be on the more antisocial side. She gets scared easily when there is noone there to protect her, but still prefers to be alone generally. She has a negative opinion of herself and is constantly putting herself down for stupid reasons. She is really hard on herself. Annika, though she isolates herself a lot, shows a lot of affection towards others. She is really comfortable with anyone- even strangers. She usually ends up giving off the wrong signals though, since she usually shows too much affection. However, she tends to misinterpret other's affection also. If you show her the slightest bit of interest she will likely think that you like like her. Annika is pretty moody and can get pretty emotional at times; she is really affected by other's opinions of her. She absolutely despises any insults and will likely overreact or get worked up by them. They don't sit well with her as she corrupts her mind and ends up deeming anything negative they say about her to be true. It is hard for her to talk to other viscet sometimes, as she cannot get out her words well. She blanks out on what she is going to say and then forgets.
❥ Why are they trying not to laugh? -
Laying on the floor was a common activity for Annika to do. She did it often- just to think and nothing else. She thought about a lot of deep concepts. Life, death. But also less deep things such as paradoxes and impossible items. She thought about history and other languages. Words in general is what started it. Annika alwats thought certain words didn't look like words. If you look at a word enough, use it enough, say it enough, and write it enough, it simply starts to become odd. The way it sounds or looks becomes strange. And when laying down on the floor to think today, she thought about words and the possible reasons why they may look strange. To her, certain words looked okay, such as "pack" or "speak," but others not. She spent half an hour, laid out on the floor, sounding out random english words that didn't look like real words sound like them.
"Bench," it started out with. She questioned the word. "Bench?" beHntch." She emphasized certain letters.
"Granola?" She rolled over onto her back. "Ghrahh-noh-lahhhh." Annika slowly pronounced the word.
"Bowl. boH-wheL. boHw-ehl," she continued on sounding it out.
"Chair. cH-AIHR. ch-aiHr," Annika kept doing this for a long time, until she got to bubbles. She said the word, and a smile came out. She not only said it wrong, but in a british accent too, which she didn't mean to do.
"Bubbles!" She yelled in delight. "bUH-BLEs. buh-blehs? i am a sophisticated British women and I have some tea and the buhb-les." Annika tried her hardest to hold back laughing.
❥ Short Story - Both Extras Used to Extend Length -
It wasn't uncommon for there to be snow around the time of halloween. It happened quiet frequently actually. It seemed to always rain or snow on Halloween, which was unfortunate. Exactly a week before Halloween was the day. A huge blizzard wiped through the area Annika lived in. She, being new the the whole responsibility thing, only recently having bought a house, was not fully prepared for the blizzard. In fact, she didn't even own a shovel yet!

Might I say that the key items to this story are a pack of toothpicks, a cinder block, and scotch tape. The story begins with a simple knock on the door. It was one of her friends, Snowden Fraser. She was flipping through channels on her television, which was only set up the day before. She was perched on a box; many were still scattered about and needed to be unpacked. Annika wasn't expecting the door to ring. As she got up, she saw a wary and unsure Snowden swaying around at the door. She just found out about the blizzard a few minutes earlier when channel surfing, but she should have known the first visitor at her house being named Snowden the day of a major storm would be bad luck.

"Can I lounge here for a while?" Annika could tell he was embarrassed to ask that.
"Of course! Taking shelter from the blizzard I am guessing?" He looked a bit calmer when she seemed to understand his situation.
"Yah, I was visiting a friend and I wasn't expecting the storm. It seemed pretty bad and I don't know if I can get back to my apartment in time with all the traffic. I really don't want to get in the middle of that so I turned around and went the way noone was going. I figured you were home unpacking and thought maybe we could unpack while we wait out this storm, if that is okay?" Snowden looked down at his smaller friend in anticipation.
"I would have done the same thing if I were in your place, Snow. I don't currently have much furniture but the appliances should all be working correctly! Come on in! Mi casa es tu casa!" Snowden relaxed even more when he realized his friend was genuinely happy to see him and it wasn't going to be an awkward few hours.

The two unpacked the remaining boxes that Annika had left scattered about the floor and places items where they agreed they looked best. They anxiously waited for the storm to hit while packing, and weren't surprised when snow came piling down in the blink of an eye. It barely took 30 seconds for a crisp layer of snow to blanket the entire ground. Annika and Snowden watched at the window in anticipation. It got windy, but how windy would it get. They listened to the weather updates as they made some small talk, completely distracted by the beautifully dangerous scene outside.

They didn't watch the snow fall in silence for long; it got boring pretty quick. They, unfortunately, were very uncreative at the time and thus, sat around bored with nothing to do. They rummaged through the only small box they didn't unpack and decided to each take out a random item. Snowden pulled out a large pack of toothpicks and Annika pulled out a new roll of Scotch tape. They were baffled by their strange activity, and had no idea what to do with these items now.

They hadn't thought that far ahead.

They sat in an awkward silence, sitting on the floor for a while, staring at the items as they tried to think of something.
"Hmmmmmm?" Snowden made a noise as he was thinking.
"Don't question this, okay!?" Annika jumped up suddenly and sprinted over to another room. She came back carrying a cinder block. Snowden was more than confused about why she had this block in her home.
"They left it here and I just haven't moved it outside, okay!" Annika saw that Snowden was greatly surprised by her coming back with this block.
"Now," she started talking as she moved around the three items in front of Snowden. "I want you…” Annika paused to think a bit longer,
“to prop up the cinderblock so at least some part of it is at least three inches in the air. The only objects you have to do this are these toothpicks and this tape." Annika blurted out like it was the best idea ever.

      "Challenged Accepted," Snowden whispered.

Snowden worked diligently and intelligently. He never once made a stupid move. He really was good with hand eye coordination, unlike Annika. He went on, stacking and adjusting for about fifteen minutes. All of it was careful work and nothing was done without reason. He completed the challenge, successfully getting one side of the block up, in less time then both of them expected. They were prepared for it to be a lot longer than that, but the small picks and slippery tape held up surprisingly well.

Annika challenged him to get the entire block as high up as he could. He still could only use the small wooden toothpicks and tape, but a small amount of craft glue too. This took a lot longer. Annika watched in anticipation. Every movement of his was swift and careful. He was puzzled by the fact that none of his creations were working. One by one, countless toothpicks broke, but Snowden thought he finally had the solution. He transferred his creation onto the mat they were using to protect the flooring, and wasting no testing time, Snowden set the cinder block down on the study stack of tiny wooden sticks, hoping the weight wouldn't be too much for the spacing of them. There were a few seconds of relief when it stayed up, but that was literally only for two or so seconds. The block came crashing down, breaking toothpicks and sending glue bits and the picks flying out as the block crinkled the tape and crushed everything in it’s way down to the mat.
“Whelp,” they both said in unison.
“Guess we’ll be spending the rest of tonight cleaning this up, as we are still trapped in this blizzard,” Snowden said warily.
“Yep,” Annika nodded her head as she gazed around the room. “Maybe tomorrow will be more fun.”
❥ Extras - both used to add ~400 more words to the story

You've got seventeen and a half hours until this closes. That's 6pm Central Time Zone. Can't wait to read through you guys forums. :)

Edit: Got a pm asking if an extra could be added to the story. Since I didn't say that it couldn't, you are more than welcome to add words to it. 1-300 words added to the story counts as an extra, adding 301-600 words used up both extras.
"There are two stars in the sky, and they're both planes."

Really though, just *Incoherent screaming*
