Viscet #1722- The Hearth and the Salamander

Postby Strudel » Tue Aug 08, 2017 10:59 am

Name: Conrad James
Gender: Male
Owner: Strudel

So my first design for the literary theme is of my favorite book of all time-- Fahrenheit 451
I adore Ray Bradbury's work, and this particular novel will always hold a special place in my heart.
Now, onto the competition.

Books bombarded Montag's shoulders, his arms, his upturned face. A book landed, almost obediently, like a white pigeon, in his hands, wings fluttering, In the dim wavering light a page hung open and it was like a snowy feather, the words delicately painted thereon. In a rush of fervor, Montag had only an instant to read a line, but it blazed as if stamped there with a fiery steel.
And then Montag's hand closed like a mouth, crushed the book with wild devotion, with an insanity of mindlessness to his chest. Montag had done nothing. His hands had done it all... his hand, with a brain of its own, with a conscience and a curiosity in each trembling finger, had turned thief.
—Ray Bradbury- Fahrenheit 451

Maybe mark or res? Fahrenheit 451 is pretty good, I tend to like dystopian society type stories. Really nice design!

mark;; decided to try out-- but not for myself.

    Name: Heath
    Gender: male
Tell me about something this viscet has done accidentally or an action they committed before their brain caught up to them: Min. 200 words, max 1000 words
Heath isn't one for dangers or for taking a lot of chances. He prefers to spend his time gaining knowledge through the written word and on occasion through travel. Rarely does Heath find himself in too many difficult situations, in earnest some might find his day to day experience rather dull but Heath is more than content with a less than exciting way of being. He finds new adventures and mishaps through reading rather than experiencing but this doesn't mean he hasn't had some accidents or mishaps of his own in real life. He's actually had more than his fair share and certainly more than he'd like to admit. Since Heath spends more time reading than he does socializing he isn't particularly sociable. This sometimes puts him in predicaments in public but none as bad as one time in particular. He had been minding his own business, heading to a book store when he stopped to pick up something he saw someone drop. Now, this wasn't really his fault but rather circumstantial. He had picked up the item and was intending to give it back when he noticed saw something on one of the pages that caught his attention. He ended up standing there for several minutes as he read through a chapter before forgetting that the book did not belong to him. He started on his way to the book store again and it wasn't until he arrived and someone called out,
"Hey is that my book?" That he realized he had never returned it and moreover that this wasn't his book at all. The woman of whom it had belonged to stormed over furiously snatching it from him as he tried to defend himself and explain that he had found it on the ground and had meant to catch up with her before he had lost sight of her. He admitted that he got engrossed in the book and just completely forgot. For a moment the woman had almost seemed to believe him before calling him a liar and a thief. She threw quite a bit of a fit for a while, embarrassing him and drawing a lot of attention from nearby individuals. It was a simple mistake that got blew way out of proportion and made a horrible scene. In the end, the woman left with a huff once she was done making a fool of him in public and left Heath to deal with the aftermath. He had a lot of skeptical looks and for a bit was watched quite closely by the book store's manager and employees with made him uncomfortable. So he stopped going for a while and found a different book store to buy from that didn't come with all that mess. It's certainly an incident that Heath doesn't intend to ever repeat.
      (470 words)
What is this viscet's favorite book? Why?: 300 words max
Picking a singular favorite book that Heath has is difficult as he enjoys reading quite a lot but if he had to pick a singular one it'd probably be the first book he really remembered enjoying reading. He was a young viscling, just beginning to really get into reading. He had read several books at this point but all of them had kind of seemed too childish even for him. But he saw a book that had an interesting cover and picked it up because his eyes had been drawn to it. The first chapter didn't seem too interesting at first, but by the second he was hooked by this story of these kids who were outcasts essentially. Something that he wasn't really but sometimes felt he was. The whole book left him on edge and left him wanting to read more. By the end of the book he was so hooked he had to go and find the next book in the series and he was truly in love with reading from then on.

if I win this will be going to Strudel. I know she is the contest holder but I know how dearly she loves this viscet and how connected she would be to it's design and meaning. So for that reason I am trying out on her behalf.

Dover Beach
BY MATTHEW ARNOLD
The sea is calm tonight.
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits; on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand,
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, sweet is the night-air!
Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets the moon-blanched land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return, up the high strand,
Begin, and cease, and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
The eternal note of sadness in.

Sophocles long ago
Heard it on the Ægean, and it brought
Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow
Of human misery; we
Find also in the sound a thought,
Hearing it by this distant northern sea.

The Sea of Faith
Was once, too, at the full, and round earth’s shore
Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled.
But now I only hear
Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar,
Retreating, to the breath
Of the night-wind, down the vast edges drear
And naked shingles of the world.

Ah, love, let us be true
To one another! for the world, which seems
To lie before us like a land of dreams,
So various, so beautiful, so new,
Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light,
Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;
And we are here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where ignorant armies clash by night.

poem in fahrenhiet 451. had to pull out my old copy of
451 to get the name of the poem, haha
