Who is their animal companion: A small brown squirrel, called Walnut C:
Story starts here:
One fall evening, Cinna was out raking leaves, sighing. Ugh. I hate chores. Especially raking leaves. Boooring. I wish- Cinna pricked his ears.
"Squeak... squeak sqik squeaaak."
Cinna, overcome with curiousity, dropped his rake, and headed towards the sound, which seemed to be in the backyard.
"Umm... who's there?" Cinna asked quietly, his voice trembling.
Suddenly a growl sounded behind the gate. Cinna froze.
Then leaves flew into the air, clawing scratching the pavement, a shriek of a small animal in pain and fear.
Cinna could stand it no longer. He threw open the gate and leaped through.
A tall coyote stopped and glared at him, a small squirrel in its mouth.
Cinna backed away slowly. "N-Ni-Nice d-doggy?" He tried. The coyote didn't move. Cinna felt really sad for the squirrel, who was about to be a meal. A shock of boldness made him stop and sit up straight.
"Bad dog! Sit!" He tried. The coyote turned on him slowly.
"Very bad dog! I said SIT! SIT DOG! SIT!"
With a roar, the coyote dropped the squirrel and leaped towards him.
"AHHHHH!" Cinna ran. He raced towards the front of the house, and skidded in front of the door. Hurry... Hurry... Where are my keys? I swear I... Oh no. I left it in the backyard, didn't I. Oh noooo. This is very, very- AHHHHHH! Cinna backed against the door, eyes wide, as the coyote stalked towards him, its jaws open in a crooked grin. Its claw slid out, sliding on the smooth stone steps.
Cinna's mind raced as the coyote drew closer. I could- No. I can't. But I can prob- That won't work. Or- Never mind. I have to accept it. There's no way out. He gritted his teeth. But I'm not going down easily. I'll fight to the death. He narrowed his eyes. The coyote was almost at him already, watching him tremble. Its grin grew wider. You think I'm easy prey, don't you. Well,
I'll show you otherwise.
The coyote jumped. Time seemed to slow down. Suddenly, Cinna saw what was going to happen next as clearly as the night sky. He leaped.
They collided and fell to the ground in a heap. Cinna scratched and bit and clawed and swiped. He was a ball of energy, scratching the coyote while the coyote couldn't get at him. Eventually, the coyote backed away, holding a paw over its eye. It looked into Cinna's eyes, then ran away yelping.
Cinna collapsed, feeling all the adrenaline he had during the battle rush out of him. He managed to sit straight up, with a proud glint in his eyes. He felt heroic, until he saw the coyote's eyeball on the ground in front of him, which made him throw up into the bushes. But besides that and the scratch that felt like it was burning, he felt pretty great.
After he got the eyeball cleaned up, it occurred to him to check on the squirrel. He rounded the gate to find his keys (Thanks a lot, keys. Where were you when I actually NEEDED you?!) and the bloody squirrel. Its wounds didn't seem to be too deep, so he took it home and took care of it.
Walnut, as he named it, became loyal to him and sat on his shoulder ever since.
