The Guardian has appeared, the Legendary tri-tail has rose from the flames.
Called "The Kitsune" for it's multiple tails, this legendary appears to possess it's own "fire"
Image

And at least the mystery is revealed. Welcoming in the second legendary of this event.
I have to say design wise this is exactly what I would have wanted personally, so I'm pretty proud of it tbh.
This competition will not be impress me persay, but in the same vein.

**note the character you build in no way has to be a guardian or anything of the nature. It is simply the title I gave it.

[Form]
Code: Select all

personality traits; (up to 5)
personality; (up to 300 words)
miscellaneous facts; (likes/dislikes, fears, goals, hobbies - up to 500 words max)

-read all the rules
-alright so everything above the "--" is required
-filling out the entire form is not required but does increase your chances of winning. however, filling out the entire form does not automatically mean you win either.
-I'm looking for creativity, good character development (both in writing and art) and the form to flow.
-art / stories matching will likely increase your chances
-back story can only be about the character's past
-art should correspond with the form - meaning to make it more than just "standing there" but include more personal details pertaining to the story/hobbies/etc
-max on words is firm - same with art.
-Other section is the only section that the art may be comic or animation.
-Important*** "required" portion or form, "backstory" and "story" must be written solely by you!
-prettying up is allowed and encouraged. though this will not count greatly in your form.
-no neon text/etc thanks
-and good luck.

*note that other tail mutations cannot work with the tail. so when breeding a fox, leopard or docked tail cannot be applied. since these tails are not the normal viscet default tails.

Halloween Viscet #1040 - Bodaway - The Healing Soldier

MINT THIS IS BEATIFUL!!

--forum best viewed on computer--

Before you read:
there are transparent words in the story for coding purposes that, when placed through a word counter will make it seem as though there are more words than there actually are. The first word of these paragraphs is linked to the sta.sh writing where these words aren't included for counting purposes c:

Bodaway is confident and overpowering in many things,
and is quite headstrong in his actions. He will never back
down from a challenge and is more than willing to take
control if progress isn't being made. Bo's confidence causes
many others to flock to and follow him happily. He does
not take advantage of this in a cruel way, but uses it for
good to help improve the world around him. Bo's followers
and ambition also serves to make him several powerful
enemies, but he is not daunted by their threats. He will go
toe-to-toe with an opponent in battle or a war of words,
even if his opponent appears greater than him. It is this
confidence that gives him a boost in the game of life and
that causes his enemies to hesitate before acting against him.
Bodaway is extremely friendly and outgoing, and is almost always the one to start a conversation. He seeks those who are alone and speaks to them in an attempt to become a friend of theirs. While he knows that many like him, he is not naive enough to believe that everyone likes him. He meets his enemies cheerfully, but with an aura of confidence and ambition. He only shows his anger or hate for someone when pressed too far, such as if an enemy were to attack a dear friend of his. When angry, he holds attacking as a third option and instead confronts the enemy. He believes that words have a much stronger impact than physical attacks, but he also knows that actions can scream out ones personality. Everything he says is heavily supported by his actions and he pays careful attention to ensure that the things that he does are not viewed as evil by those who he cares for.
Image

Bodaway is constantly near Kah and Ama, feeding his confidence to the timid Kah in hopes that he will obtain the bravery needed to face his living nightmare. However, Bo doesn't force his confidence onto Kah. He treats him as a brother, kindly and with compassion, but at times with sternness and motivation. He knows when to push Kah, and when to let him breath. Bo will often invite Kah to join him on his job as he roams the forests to saftely hold animals and show them to accompanying Viscets to show that these creatures aren't out to kill them. It's a curious job, and one that often unnerves others, particularly when he obtains an arachnid or centipede, but Bo's always patient with everyone he teaches, never forcing anyone to interact with the creatures he catches, but gives them a warm-hearted smile and invites them to try. Bo will often bring Kah on his lessons, mostly because Kah is wonderful with dealing with these creatures. It's a miracle what can happen when one sees a timid Viscet calmly pick up an insect and handle it without fear.
Bo is passionate about his job and is always willing to work. He invites viscets he meets to accompany him and takes those who accept, who he calls his class, to a biome to find creatures and teach about them. He usually takes small groups so he can give each of them the attention needed. When Kah accompanies him, he shows the basics of the creature then let's Kah work with the more timid viscet, as Bos personality can often make a nervous viscet even more scared, particularly when creatures are involved.
When he's not working, Bo is hanging out with Zoe, talking with her for long periods of time. His favorite part of the day is when Zoe, Kah, and him gather for dinner, which usually consists of various fruits and vegetables.

Image
Q - How do you think your past has affected you?
Bo - In countless ways, but the most profound is in my actions. I'm more cautious and less cocky, particularly in dangerous situations.

Q - if you could change one thing in your past, what would it be?
Bo - You'd think it would be the death of Kopei, or maybe my broken jaw, but looking back on it... I wouldn't change anything. What happened will always haunt me, but if not for it then I would remain a soldier, never caring for the world around me, always arrogant and cocky. I also would've never met Kah and Ama or Zoe.

Q - In your job, what was the most interesting encounter you've had?
Bo - We found three Pine Martenin a wooded area and were able to hold all of them. It was wonderful to see everyone react to the critters and watch their eyes illuminate. I was with Flash and Winry then, two extraordinary viscets with a talent for the world around them. I certainly won't forget that day.

spaceViscets rushed out of a den, their fur soaked.
spaceThe group stood together, their eyes darting, searching for the one who was to blame. As above them, a laugh echoed. They turned to look at Bodaway, an empty pail next to him with a grin on his face.
Grim expressions turned to grins quickly as the group swarmed Bo, playfully nudging him.
One viscet, a brown female, walked through the crowd and stood before Bo. After a moment she grinned and lightly shoved his chest.
space“Alright, Bodaway. Since you woke everyone up, how about you lead the routine?”
space“As you wish, Kopei.” The two grinned at each other for a moment longer before exploding into laughter. These were Bodaways comrades, the viscets he had gone to battle with several time in the past, the viscets he saw as family.

spaceIt was midday when the General approached. Bo grinned eagerly at Kopei, who shook her head.
space“Quit being so eager, Bo.”
space“C’mon Kopei.” Bo jumped up, catching the eyes of his comrades. “We are invincible! We have fought in countless battles and haven’t lost one life!” Bo turned to face the General. “So who will we face tonight?”
The General gazed coldly at Bo before giving him a folder. Bo waited until the General left before ripping it open and announcing its contents.
space“At Moonrise, we will leave to stop the Kasipoei Clan's advances!” Bo’s comrades shouted in excitement and he grinned at Kopei.
space“Let’s prepare.” Kopei watched as Bo rushed off with his comrades before following in silence.

spaceThe night covered the group as they traveled, their eyes on the sleeping viscets ahead. They paused at the meadow’s edge, Bo and Kopei in the lead. Bo glanced at her, nodded, and Kopei gave the signal. Viscets ran out from the meadow, startling the targets who began to rise in hope of defending themselves. Bo approached the closest and spun, slamming his tails into its chest and sending it to the ground. He pounced on another and rendered it unconscious with ease. He paused and grinned, watching his comrades fight. He felt his chest and throat warm in what he supposed was pride.
space“Bo!”
spaceBo turned at Kopei's voice and saw a viscet lunge for him. He watched as Kopei flashed by, taking the viscet with her. Bo stared in shock at his friend who lay motionless, her neck broken from the impact. The attacking viscet backed away and faced Bo. Bo’s chest, throat, and eyes burned as he stared at Kopei. The viscet screeched and Bo turned and screamed at it. Flames burst from his mouth, swarming the viscet's face. The viscet ran away in agony, its face severely burned.
spaceThere was silence, then horrified shouts as the targets fled, but Bo’s comrades did not move. Instead, they stared at him in horror as he stood, his breath heavy and shaking.

spaceBo wasn't the same after that battle. He spoke briefly and never smiled, his eyes dead and stern. He refused to sleep in his den beside his comrades, but would sit outside for hours, gazing blankly at the sky. It wasn't until word came around of an attack on the Kasipoei Clan three days after that life returned to him. Determination filled his eyes as he entered the den that night and spoke his plan. His comrades agreed hesitantly and followed him through the grass to the place of their last encounter with the clan.
spaceThey were silent as they looked around the empty meadow. Bo stepped out of hiding first and looked around, his comrades slowly following after. Suddenly, viscets fell from the treetops and attacked. Bo's eyes locked onto one with a burnt face and charged, anger seething through his veins like fire. As he ran, he didn't noticed the other viscet as it lunged for him. It collided with his jaw and knocked him down, the force breaking his jaw and rendering him unconscious. He laid motionless as his comrades fled in terror. The Clan turned away and began to leave. As the one with the burnt face passed, it kicked Bo’s head before following its clan.

spaceWhen Bo woke up, his head and jaw were throbbing. He looked up and saw a nervous viscet huddled beside him. He tried to speak but a binding held his mouth shut, so he glared at the stranger and waited for it to meet his eyes. When it did, its eyes widened and it jumped slightly.
space“A-ah! Y-you’re awa-ake… U-uhh… I-I .....I-I’m Kahli. I’m t-trying to he-elp yo-ou.”
spaceBo narrowed his eyes, but felt too exhausted to argue. He lowered his head and watched the uncomfortable viscet in silence. Eventually, he fell asleep, leaving a nervous Kahli to stress over moving him safely.

Ar-re yo-o-ou sure abo-out th-his?” Kahli looked up at Bodaway as he climbed the tree.
“Absolutely!” After Kahli had found Bo, things were awkward between the two. Bo wouldn’t speak to Kahli, but Kahli still stuck beside him. Eventually, Bo’s heart softened and he gave Kahli a chance. After that, the two began to form a strong bond, one almost stronger than that he had with Kopei. Bo saw Kahli as a brother in time and began to treat him so. That’s when they began to travel and Kahli showed Bo the wonders of the forests that Bo had missed from focusing on war. Bo found himself feeling a connection to the things he had taken advantage of in the past and grew extremely curious about it all.
“Look out below!” Bo smacked a coconut with a tail and watched it fall. He grinned and began working on another. In a few minutes, the two had several coconuts. Bo jumped down and grinned at Kahli, who grinned crookedly back. “Breakfast is served!”
Kahli’s grin suddenly faded into an expression of fear as he stared directly behind Bo, his fur raising slightly. Bo tensed and whipped around, his chest warming as he prepared to fight. He saw another viscet in the distance, its white skeletal markings seeming to glow on dark fur. Bo began to approach it, nervous but curious at the same time. Behind him, Kahli squeaked and rushed to catch up with him, practically crawling behind him. As Bo approached, the tension melted from him and he straightened himself, a warm smile appearing on his face. He noticed now that her mane was fashioned into a lovely bun with roses resting on it. She held another rose, examining the petals. “Hello there.” Her head whipped around and her burning red eyes pierced through them. Kahli squeaked and cowered more, huddling beneath Bo’s tails while Ama grunted in annoyance. “This is Kahli and Ama, my name is Bo. Who are you?” Her eyes narrowed slightly as she studied him for a moment, pondering.
“Oxomo.” Bo’s ears twitched slightly and he smiled a little more. “That’s certainly a name I haven’t heard before. Where are you from?” She didn’t answer him, just gazed in silence. It was clear that she wanted to be done with the conversation, but Bo was determined.
“That’s a lovely rose. I’ve never seen one so bright before.” He stepped forward a few steps, his eyes on the vibrant rose on Oxomo’s paws, leaving Kahli in the huddled in the open. Oxomo’s eyes follow his to the rose and she examined it in silence. “Where did you find it?” She looked up and locked eyes with him. He gazed at her in genuine curiosity, as though she were a close friend.
Oxomo paused for a moment before speaking up again. “I grew it.”
Bo’s ears sprang up. “That is amazing, I can barely get a dandelion to grow, let alone a rose!” A small smile twitched on Oxomo’s face, and Bo’s smile widened slightly. “So, what do you do besides grow roses?” Oxomo looked back at the flower.
“Dance.”
“Woah, really? You can dance? That is amazing! The best I can do is look like a fawn trying to run!” A small smile slowly grew on Oxomo’s face and she looked back up at Bo, who was staring at his feet while trying to imitate a dance, only to stumble several times and give up, grinning in embarrassment. “Could you show me?” Oxomo’s smile flickered briefly, but Bo stepped forward slightly, making it clear that he would persist until she tells him no. She nodded slightly and Bo grinned in excitement. He backed up to give her room, his tails waving in excitement. Kahli slowly looked up from his paws to watch, curiosity overwhelming fear. Oxomo adjusted the fabric resting on her soulder’s and began to dance. Slow at first, but slowly faster and with the elegance of a rose in a soft breeze. Bo’s eyes brightened as he watched, intrigued by Oxomo’s ability to dance. Kahli slowly raised his head as he watched, forgetting momentarily about Ama. Oxomo finished with a sharp yet graceful move and Bo jumped slightly as he moved toward her. “That was amazing, I have never seen something like that before! Where did you learn to dance? Do you think you could teach me? Seriously though, that was amazing!” Oxomo smiled slightly at him.
“Thank you.”
“Oxomo, would you want to hang out with us a bit longer? I have so many questions! We have coconuts.” He grinned and Kahli slowly held up a coconut, his paws shaking slightly. Oxomo paused, tossing the idea over in her mind, and nodded.
“Alright, I don’t see the harm in it.”

Augustin is skilled both in mental and physical matters, being both intelligent and strong. He is quick-thinking and sees things like a chess game, where he must plan his next five steps instead of only the next, whether it be a strategy in battle or a comeback to an insult, or even a playful pun. He tends to be cheerful and isn't afraid to crack a joke every once in a while, even in a usually serious situation, and tries most of the time to ease any tension or anxiety in stressful positions. These jokes are often used to hide many of his own doubts or troubles and they seem to do a good job of distracting others, even himself.

By nature, Augustin is extroverted, but due to the problems in his lifetime, he has become more solitary, though he still longs to be with others. Quite sociable, Augustin tends to talk a lot when he finds a friend, but he never stays long. He tends to be somewhat distrustful and wary of others, but this way of life -- being unable to trust, staying alone with the exception of his daughter -- weighs heavily on him, and sometimes this weight can chip away at his typically cheerful, happy-go-lucky persona, leaving him quieter and more thoughtful. Even when he finds himself in these dark states of mind, however, he would never let one of his enemies see him in this manner. If a demon were to attack, in a moment there would be a grin on his face, rushing to defeat another of his adversaries.

That grin, however, may not always reach his eyes.

MAGIC

Image Augustine's magic is a wild fire he was born with. At first, his magic was incredibly unpredictable, with spontaneous combustion of nearby things a real threat. However, as result of his pact with Uriel, it has become far more controlled. His magic is now far more controlled, and he is able to do many things with it, such as to craft illusions, throw fireballs or light campfires. The opposite ability is true of his magic as well now; he can shrink or put out fires at will. In addition, Augustin's fur isn't flammable and can't be burned, but he can still coat it in fire and use it both as an offensive and intimidation factor. Sometimes he will light his mane and chest fur on fire when facing enemies, just to give them a little taste of what's coming if they continue. His magic, however, with extended use, can exhaust him like it were a physically strenuous activity.

HOBBIES

Image traveling | Augustin enjoys traveling, and he sees it as one of the far better things that came out of this deal with demons, as he and Keiko are forced to run much of the time. He finds traveling to be somewhat relaxing, enjoying the physical gruel of it as well, and loves seeing the sights that come with some of the areas he must travel to; bustling cities, mountaintops, or burning deserts.
Image humming | Though he doesn't seem like the type, it is not uncommon that he will find himself humming softly to himself, especially in private and at night. He finds it quite relaxing and will even hum softly to himself in stressful situations, such as fights or other such problems.
Image astronomy | Nothing is quite as humbling as looking out into the night sky, and knowing you can see thousands of tiny suns. Augustin loves studying the night skies, which has a practical purpose of navigation, but even on long, sleepless nights, he may sit gazing out into the galaxy and count the stars.

QUIRKS

Image sleeping | There are many odd things about Augustin's way of sleeping. For one, his positions are rarely anything that would look comfortable, in weird twists or turns. Secondly, Augustin has been known to sleep walk, which can sometimes be a real problem, and other times gets himself into humorous predicaments. He tends to be quite a deep sleeper when he can actually sleep, as well, so waking him up like this can sometimes be a challenge for anyone who attempts to do so.
Image puns | As with his more lighthearted, joking side goes, Augustin enjoys puns and it isn't unusual for him to sprinkle them into his speech, usually followed by a far-too-amused grin from him and an eyeroll from his victim. The puns aren't usually that good, either, save for the occasional lucky one.

He was a fool to think it
would never happen.

The forest behind him was in a blaze, fire roaring and licking into the black sky, and it was all his fault. He knew one day his power would get out of control, one day it would break him. He didn't know why he'd settled down for a mate, and as he looked down at the small form in his mouth, he didn't know why he'd had a daughter. It was his only hope that his magic hadn't been passed down to her.

As his steps led him away from the forest, he lamented, thinking of his past. Augustin remembered everything well, and for him, sometimes too well.

He'd been born to two wild viscets, and raised normally as a viscling. Playful, happy, and innocent, just like most others of his age. The only oddity about him was the color of his fur, which matched neither of his parents'. Augustin hadn't cared as a viscling, and his parents never brought the manner up. It was simply a small, overlooked curiosity, one that never really mattered much. His mother enjoyed the vibrant colors of his fur, in fact, and it wasn't uncommon for her to make comment on her son's handsome fur.

It was when Augustin began to walk on his hind legs that the sparks began. At first, it was only small things, occasional flurries of embers following a pawstep or a tiny petal to a flower catching while in his vicinity. These things were always accompanied with a restless feeling that left him pacing, visibly uncomfortable, until something smoldered. Slowly, these problems grew.

Things only grew worse as he matured and it grew increasingly obvious who the source of these literal misfires was. The older he became, the more the fire inside of him longed to be let free, and soon, his parents shunned him. The loving pair of mates had become fearful of their son, but honestly?

Augustin couldn't blame them.

So he wandered. In this time, he became no stranger to traveling. His fires were more remote, and he grew to control them better, able to use his magic better. It was at this time that he met what would be the love of his life, a young female viscet named Kazumi. She was beautiful, enchanting, and everything Augustin could have wished for. Their infatuation with each other was mutual, and before long, they began to travel together as mates. Augustin finally had control; his life was now back on track. He would be okay, he'd be fine, or so he'd thought.

They'd had a viscling together, a little viscet named Keiko that looked strikingly similar to her mother, as if she had none of her father's genes at all. Augustin didn't mind; the little spitting image of his mate was adorable and he was perfectly happy to take care of her. They settled down, then, once and for all.

Fire could only be held down for so long, though, before it was either put out or burned through its restraints, and unfortunately for Augustin, it was not the former option.

It had happened only hours ago. He could still remember it perfectly. The bloodcurdling screech of horrific agony and the howling of flames were seared into his brain like his magic was seared into his soul. The silhouette of Kazumi, engulfed in his fire, as the nest beneath her burned and she tried to scramble out of the way. The den's dry bracken walls caught within a second of the fire's touch, and instinct hit him faster than rationality.

He grabbed Keiko, mind blank except for one word, one thought, and bolted from the den.

Survive. Survive. Survive.

That's what led him here. That's why he was still going, though he felt like he'd been running for hours. He was exhausted and his head hurt... and he couldn't get that sound out of his ears, no matter how hard they pinned down against his neck. He was afraid, and another shock of pure terror shot down his spine. What if the same happened to Keiko? He had to stop this curse that had been laid upon him. In the haze of his mind, racing to think of a solution, a legend his parents had murmured to him came to the forefront. A legend of demons, demons that stood at a crossroads and granted wishes like genies. For a price, of course. And he remembered being told never to try and summon one, or even to speak with one.

Augustin's eyes closed.

Desperate times called for desperate measures.

The forest was black and only a single creature wandered through, his pace swift but cautious. Sparks occasionally fell from his mane or fur, and an unlucky leaf near him burst into flame as he stopped in a small clearing, lowering onto all fours. In his mouth, something was rolled into a large leaf and tied with grass. His paws began working to dig, grayish dirt staining his white claws brown.

He opened his mouth and the object unceremoniously fell into the shallow hole. A feather-tip could be seen from the leaf, one of the edges singed, before he covered it up, scraping dirt over it. “Hurry, please,” he whispered, closing his eyes. When he opened it, his shoulders jerked slightly. The sky had gone a grayish-red above him. Had it worked?

Rising up, started towards the glow. His breath caught in his throat when he saw another, staring at him with icy blue eyes, a grin on his face. He knew exactly who this was: Uriel, the demon he had been trying to summon. Uriel was surrounded by two large, transparent wings, and the red glow seemed to be originating solely from him. He spoke in a sing-song voice. “You called, Augustin?”

The summoner stared at him and drew closer and, as he neared, the other raised a brow and laughed, cutting and mocking. “Did someone play pin the tail on the donkey?” Three tails that flowed like ribbons behind Augustin curled and his eyes narrowed.

“Did someone get a little jealous, considering their own tail got bitten off?”

“No. Just wondering. You seem like you’re overcompensating.” The viscet didn’t let Augustin argue this any further. “What are you looking for?”

“A deal. I need help.”

The demon stood, taking a few deliberate steps forward. “What kind of help requires a demon, hm?”

Augustin didn’t acknowledge this comment. “I have fire magic. It’s... out of control. I’ve hurt too many with it. I need... someone to stop this. You’re the only one.”

Uriel grinned, baring his teeth, which gleamed in the red light he emitted. “You came to the left demon, then,” he laughed. “Are you willing to pay the price?”

“Name it.”

There was a pause as the demon pondered over a fitting payment. “Twenty years,” he mused finally, “before we take you. You’ll gain control of your fire. Beware, though... there may be some... unexpected consequences.”

Consequences or not, Augustin was desperate. “I’ll do it.” Uriel smiled and nodded, short tail twitching. He leaned close, raising a paw, and dragged his claws down, tearing into Augustin’s thick chest fur. Blood stained the multicolored fur and Augustin let out a choked noise, eyes widening, and a highly familiar scent clogged his nose and he coughed. Uriel’s wings had unfurled completely, their full length stretched towards the crimson sky. The red light that glowed about him flashed. The crackle of fire was the last thing he heard, and then shadows overtook his vision.

Augustin awoke to a whimper. A juvenile voice mumbled “Dad..?” in his ear, and he felt a gentle nudge against his back. He inhaled, but he didn’t smell smoke like before, and he didn’t hear the soft snaps of fire anymore. In fact, he felt... different. He didn’t feel restless or restrained, he felt... normal, for perhaps the first time in his life. Augustin’s eyes trailed down, first to his chest, but the red that had stained it was gone, even though it ached. Finally, his eyes lowered to the viscling at his side. Keiko, his daughter.

“Hey,” he murmured, leaning down to nuzzle her. Her eyes were closed, which was odd, since he was so used to seeing her big brown eyes gazing bleftly up at him. Keiko looked terribly confused.

“My eyes hurt if I open them,” she said.

What?

Augustin frowned, his own golden eyes concerned, and he nudged the viscling. He started to say something, but her soft voice cut him off. He felt dread well in the pit of his stomach as she spoke, and he mentally cursed.

“I saw... an angel,” Keiko murmured, tail curling around herself, “and... he said he would help you, but he needed me -- and I said yes, ‘cause you’ve been sad a lot, ‘n... he smiled. He said it was gonna hurt, ‘n then... he bit me... and I went to sleep. I w-woke up beside you, and I can’t open my eyes and --”

“It’s okay,” Augustin attempted to comfort her. The longest of his three tails curled about her, warming her. “It’s... okay. He helped me.” It was the truth, but Augustin was enraged. Uriel had hurt his daughter. Uriel had blinded his only child. “We’ll be okay.”

Uriel was going to pay.

It had been twenty years since Augustin made the deal. He was now older, stronger, and wiser... and more stubborn, too.

Soon after he made the deal, Augustin had ran, his daughter in tow, for days on end. He ran until he came across someone else, someone that would help; a viscet named Luna. She wasn’t particularly big or strong, but she was something: willing to help. Luna was an oddity: she had experience working with demons and ghosts, and easily identified Keiko’s newfound magic as a demonic type without so much as knowing her name. Like Augustin’s old spark, Keiko’s magic had a thing for being unpredictable, and Augustin was eager with any assistance in controlling the wild fire. Luna worked to train Keiko to control her abilities, and helped Augustin hone the ones he had. And of course, she had refused anything in return but his gratitude and friendship, no matter how many times Augustin had tried to repay her. Even after it all, he still made it a habit to visit her out of appreciation for all of the things that she’d done for them, alongside the bond they developed during their time together.

They met a viscet named Atlas, too. At first, Augustin detested him, as he worked directly with the demons, but Atlas soon proved to be somewhat useful. It was an uncertain thing at first. Atlas had given him information, just what the demons were saying, because Augustin was trying to find a loophole out of the deal, and little else due to the lack of trust between them. However, after a certain night that Augustin remembered too clearly, Atlas became even more useful, able to tell the two when the demons might strike and try to drag him to hell to become another claimed soul. Thanks to him, they had been ready – and because of that, Augustin trusted him with his life.

Then, there was Jinxx. Keiko liked him, even though Augustin didn’t. Their initial meeting was somewhat of a coincidence, but she took to him like moth to a flame, and fell hard for him. Augustin’s best efforts to dissuade her were ignored, of course, although it wasn’t much of a surprise. Jinxx never proved himself as a threat, so Augustin tolerated him. Though the two could occasionally get into spats, there was a middleman to set them right, or at least separate them. Augustin often looked upon these memories with mild amusement, even if he did still dislike his daughter’s mate.

His grief for Kazumi never truly stopped; it only lessened over the years. It wasn’t uncommon that he would stay up in the dead of night, gazing at the stars and wondering if he could have done something differently. Then, in the early hours of the next morning, he would wake up and shake his head, telling himself that no, it’d already happened and there was no changing it, and put a smile on his face to try and forget. But he still thought about it.

He vowed never to take another mate.

And then there was... that day. That day, exactly one year ago. This, too, was a night that never left his memories or dreams. That had been the night that his twenty years had been used up, and the demons called for his side of the deal. Augustin had been ready, though. He didn’t plan on leaving this world yet. Even though he was older, not as strong as in his youth, he had looked Uriel in those cold blue eyes and said a single faithful word.

No.

Then, he’d blasted the demon with fire and turned on his heel, bolting. He remembered the furious shout from Uriel as he sped away. He remembered the first battle he had with the demons, summoned haphazardly by Uriel himself; foolish on his part for not being braced for resistance. Just like Augustin had been prepared to tell Uriel no, he was prepared to fight off the demons, having trained himself to fight them.

There was a lot one could learn to do in twenty years.

He and Keiko had fled. They had been travelers, but their stays in places became even shorter. Though they still did visit their friends, the meetings were often hurried and cautious. They did not want to remain, lest they put others in danger. At first, Augustin was tempted to tell Keiko to leave, tell her to go have a life with Jinxx. Then, he did. Keiko, however, was stubborn. Really, he wasn’t sure what he expected. He asked multiple times after that before he gave up, but each time he received the same answer: no. So, after a while, he stopped asking.

Augustin sat on the height of a hill, a campfire blazing behind him and a full moon glowing in the vast black sky. His golden eyes, full of a storm of emotions, reflected back the calm of the magnificent heavens. Nights as calm and peaceful as these brought up the memories of his past years. Despite the misfortune he’d experienced within them, it was a life that wasn’t terrible. Sorrowful, yes, but not unfair. There were still moments of contentment, of comfort and peace, like the very one he was enjoying. It was a life worth living.

His eyes closed. Acutely, Augustin could feel the swish of knee-high grass against his legs. There was a chilly northern breeze that originated from the cloudless night gently licking at his fur where he stood. Crickets chirped, singing in a haunting melody. Behind him, an owl hooted, and a distant coyote keened to the wind. The crackling of fire could be heard above it all.

No matter what, no matter how many demons or traps or other nonsense Uriel threw at them, they would be ready. He would be ready. He’d fight those demons, tooth and nail, kicking and screaming.

And there was nothing Uriel could do to change it.
