#496 Dapple Grey

Postby tynahi » Sun Oct 02, 2016 2:33 pm

This girl and her younger brother were found wandering the plains alone. She seems to be around 5 years old and her brother is a 2 year old. Both were found with strange brandings. The mare has a limp, is malnourished and is very skittish. The stallion seems to be blind, has deep cuts on his shoulder and rump and is very stubborn but tries to cling to his sister. Maybe you can convince one of them to come home with you?

Some form of sabino <3. I think the scatter would look really neat with her coat.

Due to the ease in which she is able to adapt and how effortlessly she seems to learn and apply new skills, Vaermina would excel in Eventing. She has a very precise and systematic mind, and often bull-headed tendencies that give her the focus and drive to shoot for the stars in the chaos and ever-shifting demands that is Eventing.

Partners Name: Chellard | x
Name:Lost in the Waves // Maristela (Meaning ‘star of the sea’)
Gender: Mare
Eye Color: Pink Haze
Coat Color: Dapple Grey [Black Base]
Personality: Maristela is loyal, very protective, and more or less has a guardian personality. She is always trying to protect her friends and family, especially her younger brother ____. Maristela is logical and intelligent. She always thinks things out carefully and plans ahead. She is seldom reckless or impulsive about anything. She is very serious, partially because of her past which left her very little time to play and have fun like other foals. She tends to have a hard time getting close to other horses because she has some trust issues. She tries not to let her past affect her future, but sometimes it is hard when her past seems to loom over her like a dark cloud.
Though she comes across as confident around other horses, Maristela has a lot of self-doubt. She pushes herself to do the best she can, and if she fails to meet her own standards she feels like a failure.
Because of this she is an overachiever and a very hard worker, always feeling like she has to prove herself and do what is expected of her, or what she expects of herself.
What’s her Relationship with her Brother like?:
Maristela is quite a bit older than her brother, and as a result she tends to be very motherly towards him because she pretty much raised him.
Maristela has always been very protective, sometimes too much. She goes about everything with caution and tends to get in the mindset that because she is very cautious he should be too. But sometimes she can be too bossy, making him want to ignore her advice, regardless of whether it is good or bad.
Maristela still doesn’t think that she protected him enough as a foal and very much blames herself for his injuries and blindness. She is always trying to make it up to him by protecting him as best she can and trying to make things easy for him, what she doesn’t always realize is that he needs to find his own way and she can’t always be right beside him guiding his hoofsteps.
But even though she can be too cautious and controlling, in the end she realizes that all she really has to do is be there when he needs her and love him through it all. Of course, she still makes mistakes and forgets this sometimes, but she is getting better.

What Happened to Them:
Maristela was born into an illegal horse breeding program. The owners would buy cheap, run down pedigree horses, or steal them, then put their own brands on them to mark them and maybe cover their previous brands.
Maristela was born in the program and lived there all her life in a crowded stable. Sometimes the humans would take random horses and bring them to auctions, selling them with embellished pedigrees. But Maristela was never one of those horses and she and her mother lived out a hard life in the program for the first few years of her life.
Maristela was three years old, a young adult, when her mother gave birth to her brother. Unfortunately her mother abandoned them shortly after. She got her chance to escape, and after the pain she had suffered at the hands of her owners, she was half crazed and her foals weren’t enough reason for her to stay.
So, Maristela raised her younger brother with the help of a mare whose foal had died at birth.
But despite her best attempts, Maristela’s brother faced as many hardships as Maristela herself had faced.
By the time they were rescued her brother was partially blind and Maristela was worn out and distrustful of humans and other horses.
What Do You Think the Brands Means?:
The cheek brand seems to be an indicator of when they were born

The shoulder brand looks like it was supposed to make who they were going to be sold to, perhaps someone made a down payment to relieve them when they were trained or full grown. Basically a sale tag.

What kind of patterning would you like to see on her?:
Perhaps minimal overo, something like this
How do you deal with her limp:
We have been trying to gently exercise her, letting her have some outdoor time to walk or trot if she feels up to it. We aren’t sure yet whether her limp remains because a past injury was so severe, or because she was cooped up indoors a lot and never had a chance to work it out, so, we are having experienced vets take a look at her. In the meantime, we have decided she will not be a heavy riding horse. Though our vets cannot pinpoint her exact injury yet we think that it would be unwise to try to ride her since she has gone with this injury for some time.
How do you deal with her skittishness:
We try to give her her space, letting her know we are near, but not getting too close. After her past we have decided to let her come to us on her terms and not push it too much.
What discipline would she excel in?:
We think she might excel in dressage. Because of her injury we do not want to have her in jumping or cross country and risk her getting injured again, but aside of the limp she does have a natural grace and her overall appearance is appealing.
Extra of your choosing(Below):
How Maristela settled into her new home:
Maristela had a really hard time settling in with us at first. Something was really bothering her and for some time she wouldn’t eat or drink much and she barely paid us any attention, though she did keep up boundaries. She showed no interest in the other horses at the stable and she would just stand listlessly in her paddock.
It wasn’t until we looked through her files that we realized that she had always lived with other horses. Thinking she might be lonely we came up with a new plan.
We tried to pair her up with several of our horses, but still, nothing seemed to help. Finally we decided that no matter what, she wasn’t thriving at the stable, so we set her free into our wild horse enclosure, a bit of land that stretched for miles and was home to a large herd as well as some loners and other individuals. These mustangs had failed to thrive in captivity so we let them go in our ‘reserve’. We hoped it would revive Maristela like it had them.
So, we released her the next day just a half mile from the herd. She seemed eager enough to get away from us and we decided to let her go and come back in a few days to see how she was faring.
When we returned we found that she was still alone, not because the other horse’s wouldn’t’ accept her, but because she was purposely isolating herself. She was getting skinny so we lured her back to the trailer and drove her back to the stable.
There we tried to get some food in her and we asked the vet to come by again to check her over. After looking through her files and examining her the vet diagnosed her as depressed. She said it was likely that she missed a particular horse, maybe a parent, sibling, foal, or close friend.
We went through her purchase files, then contacted her sellers. They told us about her brother and we decided to try to locate him.
After several days we found out he had been adopted out to a stable a few miles away. We contacted the owners and asked if we might be able to bring Maristela over to see her brother so that she would see he was safe. They agreed and we drove out that day.
When we arrived Maristela was as unhappy looking as ever, but as soon as her brother was led out she perked up instantly, pulling away from us to go see him.
We let the two horses visit in a paddock for a while and discussed potential meetings between them with her brother’s owner. When it was time to go Maristela seemed reluctant, but she went without complaint.
After we got her home she was like a different horse, eating and drinking, even socializing just a little with some of the other stable horses. From then on we made sure she always had company, though she seemed not to care too much, and we also let her go visit her brother whenever his owner’s consented.
We still don’t know what happened that day, whether she just needed to see him, or maybe in his own way he told her he was okay, but we did realize that these two horses have a special bond and that it would be unfair to keep them apart forever, so, we continue to make the drive for a visit, and we swear she knows exactly when we are going to see her brother and gets excited ahead of time. . .

    Partner's Name: legend-
Name: Shards of Destruction - Loralei
    Gender: Mare
    Eye color: Pink Haze
Coat color: Dapple Grey [Black Base]
Personality: Due to being the elder of the duo, Loralei has had a much longer timeframe in which she could develop herself, unlike Hah. Though, it doesn't seem that her younger brother needed much time to find himself. They're polar opposites, she'll be the first to admit. She tends to be much more impulsive in her actions, putting thought to it at a later time rather than in the moment. She's best like this, reacting naturally, thanks to a sensible head on her shoulders that more or less has a short answer for every viable situation whether she's aware or not. Along with this comes a level of maturity that Hah hasn't quite seemed to grasp as of yet; knowing when to put a halt to the games and throw herself fully into her work without resistance or extra comments, being respectful in appropriate instances, and the like. However, she isn't bland by any means. In fact, she's probably the most colorful out of her troop, cracking jokes even when at her worst to keep the moral high and always running off topic during conversations with odd humorous comments that often leave you scratching your head. She's confident and enjoyable enough despite her lack of verbal filter and short fuse. Not hard to anger, many have been witness to her less appealing side and have thus found reason to not provoke her, for if she is impulsive and risky in normal circumstances, she's absolutely reckless when blinded by her own rage. Little sense flows to her mind once she enters that state, and chaos can ensue rather quickly. One point she is firmly serious with is her brother, she is the only one allowed to give him a hard time and is fiercely protective of him, going as far as forcing herself to be appointed his personal guard when she is not on call for the warriors. They're hardly ever apart.
What's her relationship with her brother like?: Apart, these two siblings are properly functioning members of their community, together they are a chaotic mesh of functionality with too much to offer. They're a power duo, undeniably progressive in their, albeit parlous, ideas. Their opposing characteristics define them individually but also make for no dull moments between them. Not on much do they agree, each always having something to counter whatever idea is proposed by their partner, but without question they flow together better than any other team. Their arguments - from mild to violent, though the latter is rare at most - fuel the search of a compromise which nearly always promises a better outcome than the original, one in which most parties are satisfied. Aside from the usual sibling bickerings they endure, they're actually quite teasing of each other. When not in the face of business, every moment is spent throwing increasingly more brutal and admittedly more idiosyncratic insults back and forth for their own amusement. It's a two sided thing, giving each other a difficult time, and is essentially the basis of their entire relationship. If they can't find a companion in each other, who else are they to grow close to without putting themselves in direct danger?
What happened to them: With origins tangled deep into the Australian outback, it's actually quite the tale of how they managed to find themselves over in the Americas. A long story. But, to spare the sanity of us all, take a condensed version:
War. It had engulfed them, cloaked their land with a hostile darkness and turned brother against brother. It was internal - a civil war by definition, but it remained anything but civil. If not for the reddish tint of the land prior, one could claim the bloodshed had been what turned the dry expanse of nothingness it's rusted shade. The timeframe spanned over several grueling months of tortuous and redundant battles. Two sides belonged to the war; the home-liars, those who stood for the royal family's presence and ruling, and the freelancers, those who opposed the blue bloods and all that they stood for. Neither side appeared to outrank the other, with nearly as many loyal hearts as there were rebels standing off against those they had once called their own. That is, until the freelancers called upon outside forces and took control of the entire dispute. With their fall imminent, the blue bloods saw their children off with an escort of a guard each. They could spare no more. Hah and Loralei did not witness the fall, but rather felt it in their bones. They'd covered mere miles of the outback when the two found themselves struck down with spontaneous sorrow. Due to the heat, most details become lost around here, but both can confidently confirm that an opposing force came through and claimed the lives of their guards, nearly managing to take Hah with them if not for Loralei's own interference. Memories only return to them in wholes following their capture and shipment to the states, where they'd been separated and cared for.
What do you think the brands mean?: In Loralei and Hah's tribe, each mark is a representation of the individual who bears it. The marks can range in definition at times depending entirely upon the fashion they're laid, but once you've been around them long enough, you learn to decipher them rather quickly. For example, Lei bears a simple shadow of a triangle upon her cheek. Unlike her brother's more detailed mark, her's faces with the main point up towards the sky. The direction is a clear read that she is a mare to any who retain a lick of knowledge of the marks, but goes farther into detail with each point. Respectively, the three dots read out her bloodline, training level, and mating rights. Royal bloodlines bear the simple dot, the highest ranking of training in the bearer's field also displays the dot, just as the strictly royal mate rights does. The shoulder is more complex, including the danger levels and temperament of its individual at minimum. For scholars and the like, they will include marks defining their area of expertise, etc. The most important factor you must be aware of is the fewer the marks, the faster you'll wish to run. There is a minimum of one mark that must lay upon the shoulder, and this usually is the only common feature among those unfit for herd life. The more marks visible, the more at ease you may be. Hah bears more marks than his sister, a telltale sign that he is the one you would prefer approaching, as Loralei only retains half of the number her brother wears. She is one mark above being unfit to remain in the herd's ranks.
What kind of patterning would you like to see on her?: Preferably none. Tribe traditions praise lack of marks, it's a consistency among the blue bloods. Besides being a distinguishing feature, it is also a sign of fortune for the herd. For if the heir is born with the least amount of white possible, it is said he will lead into prosperity throughout his years.
How do you deal with her limp: Of course, this is a difficult question, mostly due to the fact of Loralei's unnerve around humans. In the beginning the first step was to have the cause diagnosed. To do this, the process required the doctor to get rather up close and personal with her. She was tranquilized for the safety of all involved parties. Her symptoms were as follows; inflammation of the joints from hoof to shoulder, dwindling fever, and a mild rash covering the insides of both her forelegs and across her chest. Bloodwork was done as a mandatory procedure, resulting in the final diagnosis of Adult's Still disease, a rare form of arthritis the surfaces in adulthood. It was assumed the disease had only affected her singular leg for the moment, which appeared to be the only bright side to the entire situation. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were prescribed to her. They would be required for the remainder of her life, and at a later point more hands-on methods were taken to make the spells of pain more bearable for her. Following her acceptance of the human presence, that is.
How do you deal with her skittishness: Almost immediately this skittish behavior only appeared to spring up when a human made itself present. From afar she would remain acutely observant and alert, rather jumpy at any sharp movements, but once within closer range the anxiety turned for aggression. She would lash out violently towards the approaching 'threat' until it backed off once more. It became apparent it was amplified by the tall fences encasing her once on her new home's turf. In order to deal with this, many examples were made of the other mustangs on the farm where they were handled a fair amount while in her view, alongside a designated person being given charge over befriending the mare, more or less taking the place of her brother for the time being. Once she becomes confident in the humans around her, she'll be returned to her brother's side and the two will be introduced into the breeding program.
What discipline would she excel in?: Pleasure driving. Odd choice, admittedly, but when her arthritis is managed and paired with a light cart, she'd be able to excel in the low speed ranges of the discipline. A weight limit obviously will be set for her, beginning with only the cart and it's attachment's weight, and progressively heavier until she can manage a singular adult person. That is the ultimate goal, just to play on the safe side, but anything beyond that would be astounding.
Extra: Males are the only viable heirs to the throne, it's an unbroken tradition. While females retain their pure blooded status, they are not fit to claim the crown in any manner. If their king dies, the queen denounces her title and her son will be crowned. If no son is available from the line, the former queen will take on another royal mate from a neighboring herd. Daughters and sons alike receive mates descended from royalty, daughter's sons may take the crown if there is no other who can. It's a complicated sort of arrangement to say the least, but the gist of it all is the fact a female may not lead the tribe. And so, with that said, you can imagine the disappointment surrounding Loralei's birth. She was no heir. No position presented itself for her in those early years, no definitive one at least. She was trained in many arts, but only with the arrival of Hah did she pinpoint where she felt she belonged. Ironically enough, it was the same thing that would later claim her home and topple her carefully built life; the battlefront.
One child taught the art of leadership with a phantom crown already placed upon his head, and the other knowledgeable of many things already, but thrusting herself head-first into battles. There was a stark contrast between the two siblings all things considered, yet oddly enough the rift only appeared to bring them closer together. It was always Hah and Loralei against the world; the brains and the brawn, one thinking up a safe path and the other paving it for them both. There were set roles they played for the other. They were comfortable where and how they stood in parallel to the other, so when they found their roles reversed one day, it was a difficult transition between the two extremes.
The day fell many months many months before the inevitable battle that sent them America bound. Loralei had found herself amidst an unanticipated uproar, bellicose and set on extinguishing the fire that had sparked such a disruption. During it, for the first time, she sustained a major injury spanning the length between the crest of her neck and the center of her chest. She was dismissed from further duty until she had healed. Despite being adamant of her well being and ability to carry out her assigned orders, the mare weakened to the point she could hardly concentrate enough to ensure she could stand without toppling into the reddish dirt. She would see no one but her brother during this time, being tucked out of sight to avoid any more blows to her pride. Their roles reversed the first time he stepped foot into her temporary shelter, seeing the older sister he'd spent so many years looking up to now settled on the ground where he could only look down at her. She looked broken and fragile, unable to operate her own body nor ward off what plagued her. She so drastically crumpled from a war-torn hero into a little girl that it appeared she had not time to adjust. She was simply snatched from her daily life and thrust into one that permitted only the bare minimum. No exces activity, nothing to pass the time by besides laying in the dark, hidden from view and reprimanding herself for being dumb enough to end up in this situation.
Hah set aside his arrogance if only for a moment for his sister. He made the trek to visit her religiously, making time for a drop in if it were not freely presented to him. He became her protector in her time of need, though he could only do so much physical protecting for her given his own situation. More of his protection came mentally, from his quietly talking to her and helping her through the issues her state brought upon her by reciprocating how he had come to cope with his own disability. Loralei, granted almost too much time to her mind, became the brains of their little pair, plotting out plans of action for the issues Hah brought to her during this time when he found himself too stressed to be able to properly provide a logical answer. By the conclusion of the predicament, both siblings were more than happy to revert back to their original roles with their newfound knowledge of the opposite duly noted and stored as a card of reference for the job they no longer possessed to recall upon in instances during which they began to doubt the intensity of said job.
