Kalon #532 // Barn Owl (end date change to 27th)

Postby clouds-move-on » Mon Sep 05, 2016 9:21 am

ᴡʜᴀᴛ ᴀʀᴇ ᴋᴀʟᴏɴs? wrote:Kalons-- a species with soft manes and even softer hearts.

Monitored in forests across the globe for years, these animals
have recently been declared naturally tame as well as sapient.
Scientists are asking the general population to consider adopting
Kalons for further study in their capabilities of intelligence.

Their shining tails are used for identification and showing off,
which is helpful when spotting another Kalon from afar. This
association with other Kalons is why they are head-over-heels
for any shiny or colorful item that they come across!

Awhile ago I said I'd do some bird kalons, so here you are. c:

Now for the contest...
Just fill out the form, the highlights for judging being his "pet"/animal companion and a story of home.
Your permitted 1 extra which can be 200 words or writing OR One Drawing.

By "A story of home", what do I mean?
Describe their basic life/home in a short story format! Give me an image of their daily habits/life without being too "boring". I won't be assigning a word limit, but try and keep it under 900 words, but over 200 words if you can!

Code: Select all
Username:
Name:
Gender:
Personality: (in under 100 words)
About their pet and them: (in under 200 words, can describe how they found/bought/adopted them, their realtionship, so on)
A Story of Home: (no limit, but try to keep under 900 word or over 200 words)
Interesting Fact/Hobby about them/they have: (under 200 words)
OPTIONAL Extra:

I will judged based on:
 • Their pet's info and their relationship with their pet. (TIP: You won't get bonus points for an "exotic/cool" pet or a stereotypical dog or cat! Any if fine so long as it fits the character... so be it a tamed wild bird to a stray kitten, as long as it "clicks" to you. I like touching/cute stories as to how they "met", but nothing too depressing please.)
 • The story's creativity. (TIP: You may interpret "home" (do they feel at home there or is it just where they live?) as you will. Try to describe the surroundings vividly. And try to keep it light hearted/avoid sob stories!)

The extra may or may not add bonus points. Prettying up will also add bonus points or be used as a tie breaker. c:
As for the end date, new forms close at page 5 (so no markings/reserves if you can help it!) and the end date is September 19th.
Extensions are completely probable if asked! c:

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.

hope is crazy about everything! she is always trying to help, but can sometimes get annoying while doing it. she can't help it, she has been lonely for too long. hope wants to make many friends, but most of them pretend to be her friend but ignore her later on. hope hops around all day and never gets tired. her spirit is always joyful, and goes on like that forever. hope's favorite thing to do is to give suprise presents to kids and make anyone happy. she sees the good in all kalons, and will keep discovering more.

Image

hope found umber curled up into a furry ball right by her cheek. she looked at her closely, trying to figure out what she is. she thought that umber looked like a squirrel, and woke her up. the squirrel-thingy jumped up, and ran up hope's arm, onto her neck. then, umber did something amazing, she flew! hope had never seen anything like it, umber glided across the air like a bird. she landed, making a peep sound. then, she ran off to find nuts. of course, hope wanted to find out what she was doing. so, umber was followed by hope to a big tree. umber dug, stuffing the nuts in her cheeks as she found them. hope watched close by, thinking of a name. she always thought the name "umber" was pretty. and she was also the right color! she smiled as the little flying squirrel ran up her arm again, ready and stuffed. her cheeks puffed out easily an inch, and hope started trotting to the hole she slept in. they shared nuts, and discovered new mysteries together.

Image

she had nowhere to go. she decided to be an explorer, and started looking around trees. badgers here, squirrels there, but she always stayed away from the skunks. her mother had told her that they spray stinky gas out, and hope always wanted to see that happen. but she as scared, too. so she didn't go near them. it was almost nighttime when she found a large hole carved into a small hill. "hello?" she called softly, but no answer. so she traveled farther down. it went about 10 feet before coming to a large room. no one was home, so hope settled in. she fell asleep quickly, tired from looking for homes. her dream was unsettling, about the whole forest burning down. she woke up and blinked, checking outside just in case. yep, everything was a-okay. she sighed and walked back to her room, and lay down. she slept peacefully until morning, when she was awoken by a large bird. "SQUAWK SQUAWK!!" it yelled into the misty air. hope yawned and stretched, rubbing her eyes sleepily. she was startled that she was in a hole, forgetting that she was thrown out. "aah!" she yelled at the left wall "aah!" she yelled at the right wall "AHH!" she screamed because she had a lot of energy. she remembered and said "oh". when she stepped out, all of the forest animals were staring at her. "hehe" she said shyly. the animals resumed their work, gathering nuts for the winter. hope not her lip, trying to think of a way to sleep better. that night's sleep was terrible, leaving cramps everywhere. she dragged a bunch of leaves over, and lay them out for a bed. she set hard to work, making a small fire pit for the winter. a crow flew in, obviously confused. it landed - or at least tried to - on the wall, slipping off and landing with a thump. hope rushed over, laying it on her bed. it woke up and squawked, trying to fly away. but hope had other plans, and wrapped a soft cloth around his head. the crow's head was bleeding, and hope put some herbs on it. she had learned from her father, before he went out to sea and never came back. she held the crow like a baby, cradling it in her arms and rocking it back and forth. the crow started to sleep, and hope wrapped him in her bed. Hope smiled at the healing crow, and looked out the door of her home. the sun was setting, and most of the animals were in their dens or nests. she wondered if the crow had any family waiting for him, and ducked back into her burrow. the crow had started to wake up, opening and closing its eyes a couple times. it yawned, staring blankly at hope. she helped it stand up, and smiled when it looked up at her. "hello," she said in a soft voice.
"squawk?" it replied, walking around her room.
"oh, yes. this is my home. do you... are you okay to fly?" she stammered, and the crow seemed to listen to her. it flapped its wings a couple of times, and took flight. the crow glided around the room, perfectly like it had never hurt herself. she chirped a couple of times, and hope knew that the crow was looking for her chicks.
"come over to the door, and I'll let you go," hope said softly. it angled downward and landed, walking over to the entrance. she nodded and took off, flying to the tallest tree. there was a nest there, and hope saw her land. her chicks! hope thought, smiling up at the crow. it waved with her wing, and jumped into the nest to give her chicks food. hope fought tears of joy back, and walked to her room. it was dark out, and she was tired. laying on her leaf bed, she slept quickly and quietly. the sound of the wind sang her a lullaby, and she was soon in a dream. (skip because this is where hope finds umber)
hope smiled down at the little flying squirrel as she peeled off the shells of the nuts. umber chattered quite a bit, but it never annoyed hope. sometimes it's the other way around, when hope never stops talking and umber listens. she had installed a wooden door for heat, because winter was already in its way. umber and hope had gathered nuts and berries together for food. the fire pit was being used, and umber and hope we're sitting next to it. well, umber was actually sitting in hope's lap who was sitting next to the fire. anyway, that night was horrible. it rained hard, thundering loudly nearby. hope and umber didn't get a wink of sleep, and woke up all tired in the morning. hope opened the door, and looked out. it was sunny, though the grass was still wet. umber ran up hope's arms, up to her shoulder. they went back inside and ate, thinking about what to do that day. sleep? or maybe check on all of the forest animals? they wanted to check on all of the animals, but actually slept. they worked hard, building new houses for friends and helping all animals. the year came to an end, and another one started. new animals were born, meeting hope and umber.

Image

hope, the kind of really hyper kalon, actually has patience. well, she had patience. she used to meditate in her field back home, the wind blowing softly across her face. she concentrated on one thing, and didn't feel surrounded by anything. her mind was clear, and no one was yelling or screaming. the only thing she could hear was the wind, birds, and crickets. I don't think I told you she did this at midnight, no one defiantly awake. she hummed, moving with the wind. if she was really up to it, she would do a little wind dance, and settled back down when she finished. sometimes, hope put on ear buds and listened to music, the soothing kind. when she was really angry, she practiced hard yoga poses, like the stork or airplane. now, umber does them, too. though they have to be careful that hope doesn't fall on top of umber! hope has discovered a new thing, patience.

Name:
Ella

Gender:
Female—she/her and they/them pronouns

Personality:
Her favorite time of day is dusk. The cool, dark hues of the sky brings a sense of wonder to Ella's heart, a tugging force resounds within. Ella takes long, sometimes lonely strolls under the moon, something that leaves her brimming with fascination. She has an admiration for all things dark and unknown; she can spend weeks on end attempting to wrap her head around the concept of magic. The kit inside of her believes the sprinkle of stars within the night sky, echoed chirps of grasshoppers, and the occasional coyote's lament are all a part of nature's magical scheme.
Image
About their pet and them:
She had been trekking through the damp woods just outside of her yard when she heard a distant scurry of leaves. Ella knew it was a bit early for woodland creatures to be occupying the forest, but decided to head through the dew-covered shrubbery. Navigating around gnarled roots of the residential trees, she neared a golden clearing. Ella wasn't sure what to expect; it consisted of wheat and other forms of plants, but the noise piqued her interest.
Sure enough, she uncovered a small fawn. Ella wasn't sure what to exactly make of her find, but the poor thing looked only a few months old. She decided the best course of action would be to stake out the area. Ella worried so much for the small fawn, that she spent two days waiting near the far edge of the clearing. After the waiting was over, Ella took in the fawn, Harley, and raised him as her own. She used a variety of wildlife websites to help raise him. After a year of their shared home, she let him back out into the wild. However, Harley did not sprint out to the woods; he trotted back to Ella's side loyally.
Image
A Story of Home:
"Do you like piña coladas," Ella's phone sang on the nightstand, much to her chagrin. She reached a paw out and fumbled to turn the device off, hitting a few dolls in the process. She then stretched in her bed, keeping her eyes closed for just one more minute. No, I don't really like piña coladas, especially this early in the morning, Ella practically grumbled, shuffling out of the bed.
A skitter of hooves on the hard wood flooring gave Ella a good five second preparation for her friend's appearance. His small head collided into her stomach with a good wheeze escaping her lips.
Poor Ella falls back onto the floor, emitting a chime of giggles as she heartily pets the deer, "Morning to you too, Harley. How'd my best bud sleep?" she smiled towards him, examining his amber gaze with fascination. Harley didn't say anything, but he managed to nose his head into the pit of her arm, desperate for some attention. Ella patted his side and got up, leading her hungry friend into the kitchen. She spent time brewing her coffee, using her free time to make the classic bacon-and-eggs meal. She quickly ate the homemade meal, poured her coffee into a thermos, and led Harley out to the woods.
"Let's go for a little walk, hm? After that, we'll be going to back to the fields," she rubbed behind his large ears, wading alongside Harley through the thickets. The duo started each day with a nice walk through the woods, spending fifteen or twenty minutes to appreciate the scenery. Sometimes, Ella wondered whether or not the forest had deities residing within. On those days where early morning fog seeped between the trees, with a whisper of wind crooning her name, Ella just knew a god had taken refuge inside the woods. Either that, or the local high-schoolers really like scaring the carp out of her!
Besides the occasional grunt from Harley, their hike had been relatively quiet. She led Harley back home, grabbed her teal bike, and began pedaling to the fields. She watched as Harley gallantly trotted alongside the bike, his long strides nearly overcame her pedaling. Ella laughed, shaking her head as the wind combed its wispy fingers through her short fur, the sensation both pleasing and odd. She continued to pedal down the lengthy, pot-hole covered road, maneuvering around the dents with ease.
"Catch up, Harley! I might beat you this time," she called back, grinning to the buck. Harley didn't register the taunt, only focused on the road ahead, his cloven hooves rhythmically hit the pavement with gusto. He soon surpassed Ella's place on the road and continued to sprint the home stretch as the farm's colorful archway greeted their gaze.
"Aw, come on!" Ella sighed, her calves practically burned while she slowed her speed. When the pavement met the gravel, Ella hopped off the bike and escorted it to the barn's side, carefully laying it against the maroon shed with a sigh. She sipped on her thermos, savoring the coffee's warm, bitter taste in her mouth.
"Good race, Harley," she panted, petting his side. Ella walked along the uneven gravel, nearing the vivid fields, eager for the job that awaits her. She immediately got to work, walking along the rows of produce, inspecting each flower that met her gaze. Harley helped by munching on the stray weeds or premature fruit that escaped their branches. The duo walked through each row, following a pattern that only they knew. After four hours of sweat, dirt, and heavy labor, Ella treated herself to a midday meal.
She went to the main barn and snagged Harley his favorite bowl of fruits from the fridge, poured some cool water into the colorful bowl, and slid it onto the floor for Harley's pleasure. She made a sandwich while Harley ate, spending the lunch hour both eating and loving on Harley.
Just as quick as it came, she reluctantly went back into the afternoon sun to finish her job. To and fro, Ella went in practically every direction to tend to the field. She watered, checked for any infestation, and refilled the farm's supply of fertilizer (perhaps the worst part of her day, to be honest!) Sure, she loved getting out into the field, moving around in the sun, and generally working up a sweat, but refilling the dumpster-sized container of manure was the one thing she loathed. Ella puffed her cheeks out and trotted down the grassy road, fulfilling her duty to the farm's success within a good hour of sweaty, odorous shoveling.
"Ah man," Ella wheezed, coughing into the bandana around her muzzle. She squints, stabbing the smelly pile with her dirty shovel, "I hate this part of the day," she flattened her ears. She returned to Harley with a rather dejected posture, but finished up her round at the farm with a wave to her employers.
"See you later, Maria!" Ella called out, panting softly. She wiped the sweat off of her face, grabbed her bike, and walked out of the quaint farm. Harley trailed behind her, letting his white tail flick to and fro as if he were sassing the farm. The tired farm hand and her silent friend rode back to their home, where an evening of resting and hikes awaited them.

Interesting Fact/Hobby about them/they have:
Unbeknownst to many, Ella has an odd fascination with twigs. She spends most of her evenings collecting branches that catch her attention. Feeble twigs, extravagant branches, and sometimes the mutilated drift wood, Ella uses her hoard to create a variety of sculptures. She tries her best to fit the mismatched pieces in the forms of creatures, horses that graze along the barren gravel, wolves who guard the doorstep, and other animals are her favorite ones to create. Ella has been told on numerous occasions to sell her work, but she'd much rather do it for fun, as she claims monetary gain would "take the joy out of it".
