Kleeare #17 ✧ Winter Rescue

Postby canis, » Sun Dec 13, 2015 9:16 am

We recently got an urgent call from the local authorities. It seems that they were called in after a recent sighting of a very skinny, odd-looking horse left out in the freezing cold. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered a huge Kleeare stable to be abandoned. The Kleeare were simply left, some in the pasture, some trapped in their stalls. And all extremely emaciated. We responded quickly, arriving at the stable and assessing the condition of each Kleeare. The sight shocked us, but we did not fret. We brought each one of the Kleeare back to our place, where they were evaluated by our veterinarian. Some cases were more extreme than others, but all of them had the chance to be saved. That's where you step in...

This Kleeare is severely underweight, more so than most of the others. He also has nasty fear of humans. Our rescuers chased him for hours before catching him.

First Meeting wrote:Hearing a truck and trailer coming down the dirt road outside, Molly jogged out of the stables and into the front drive. She waved at the driver as he pulled up and parked his truck. "Special delivery!" He said, grinning from ear to ear as he hugged Molly. "Hey Jack," She said, returning the hug before walking to the gate at the back of the trailer. "I've been waiting for you for days. Did you bring my rescue?" She looked through the slats into the darkened trailer. She heard quiet huffing inside, and turned to her friend. Jack nodded. "Yeah, and he will definitely keep you busy for a while. He is quite a kicker. Took two hours just to get him into this trailer, who knows how long it will take to get him to stay in a fenced area, let alone a stall." He handed Molly a lead and gestured to his arm which was in a sling. "He did this to me last time I tried to handle him, so I can't be of much help." Molly gulped. Pulling out the ramp, and walked up it and slowly unhooked the three latches holding the door shut. She opened it cautiously and looked inside. Laying on it's side, was an ugly looking, scrawny stallion, breathing heavier than she had ever seen a horse do. She walked along his back, up towards his head where a worn out halter was fastened loosely around his thin head. Trying to move quickly but silently, Molly clipped the lead rope onto the ring on his halter. The moment the lead was attached, the Stallion bolted to his feet and tried to rear. Knocking his head on the top of the trailer only scared him more, and he tried to turn and bolt. With every ounce of power she had in her body, Molly yanked the lead, whipping him back around. He bayed, and tried again. This time, Molly was more prepared. She ran ahead of him, and out the door of the trailer before he had even completely turned about. Once the animal was out of the trailer, he reared and bucked like nothing she had ever seen. Though he pulled and tugged at the rope, he didn't have the strength to pull it from Molly's hand, and after two or three more kicks and loud cries, he began to tremble. Molly pulled the lead with very little effort and the stallion hung his head and followed. Out of breath, she lead him into a small paddock where she could examine him. Taking the lead off was like letting a cat out of a box. He bolted across the paddock with all the strength he had left, and ran to a shady spot where he layed down and panted, just as he was in the trailer before Molly had entered. Watching from afar, she began to make some mental notes. "Severely underweight, extremely afraid of humans." mumbling a few other things under her breath to herself, she noticed Jack standing at the fence leaning his one good arm on it. "You had me scared for a second with all that noise," he called. "Well, I've got to get going to pick up and drop off some more rescues. It was nice seeing you! Take care, and be careful with that one." And he was gone. Molly turned back to look at the exhausted horse in the corner. "What have I gotten myself into.." She mumbled.

Welcome Home wrote:After a few hours of keeping a watchful eye on the new stallion, Molly noticed that darkness was starting to fall. It had been a very mild winter and hadn't been cold enough to have a real need to bring all the horses in, but it was beginning to be colder at night and she had a feeling that it would get a little too cold for this rescue out tonight. She sighed, and picked up the lead. She walked in the growing shadows of the trees towards to stallion who was standing motionless leaning against the fence. She began to softly coo at him, letting him know she was there. He wearily lifted his head. Molly could tell that he was too exhausted to put up any fight. Clipping the lead onto his tattered halter, she led him easily into the barn, where the other horses had already been tucked away in their stalls. A few of the younger more curious foals peered out into the hall at the new arrival, and whinnied at him. The stallion began to pull on the lead slightly, and Molly's heart began to race. "Shh, hush, it's alright." She whispered, putting her hand on his muzzle. He moaned and rolled his eyes, stomping his front hooves. Molly moved faster, pulling slightly on the rope, leading him into his stall. It was the largest stall in the whole stables, designed specially for rescues. It had a feed and water trough on the wall in one corner so they wouldn't be kicked over, and a net of hay in another. It had double braced and barricaded walls for the strong kicks that it might receive. On the outside of the door were hooks for bridles, harnesses, leads, and brushes, as well as a feed box, and a small cabinet built into the wall for medicines and treats. Molly pet the stallion softly on his thin neck. He was frightened by the strange sounds, smells and sights, but he was too tired to fight it any longer. He bayed loudly, before falling onto the floor exhausted from the day of fighting. Putting a hand on his neck, and slowly moving it up to his head, she removed the dirty and torn old halter. "We'll get you a shining new one, tomorrow." She whispered, before standing and walking out of the stall. She bolted it shut, and headed back up to the house.

A Spoonful of Sugar wrote:When Molly woke the next morning and went into the stables, the usual morning buzz filled her with energy. She entered the tack and feed room, and poked through the many halters they had hanging on pegs row after row on one wall. After a few minutes of handling nearly every single one, she came across an Ivory colored halter with silver clasps and a sprig of lavender on the cheek strap and a silver 'H' just below it. She held it in her hands and smiled. As she was about to exit the room, she noticed a small piece of paper sitting on top of three bottles of medication. "Jack brought this boy by my office yesterday morning. I looked him over and made my assessment which I've attached below, and these are the medications he will need to take. Instructions are on the bottles, good luck! - Dr. Kasey" Molly looked over the instructions and the assessment and groaned. Yesterday had been simply a struggle to get him out of the trailer. Now medicine! She picked up the bottles and walked heavily to her rescue's stall. "Good morning boy," she said gently. The stallion hadn't moved from his position all night, but his heavy breathing at slowed to normal and he didn't look quite as exhausted. Reaching into her pocket, Molly pulled out a honey glazed carrot, and poked a pill straight through the middle. "Please be easy..." She thought, as she opened the stall door and walked towards the now standing horse. He looked ready to fight. Holding out her hand with the medicated snack, she offered it to the timid stallion. He sniffed it for a moment, then lifted his head. Molly locked eyes with him, and for a moment he looked like he was nearly trusting her. He bent to sniff once again, and with one lick, took it from her hand and chewed it. He groaned and stuck out his tongue, shaking his head. "Well, I think it's safe to say you don't like honey glazed carrots!" She laughed. The next two pills were a breeze, with the help of some oats and dried sweet grass cakes. Molly smiled. It'd only been a day and already they seemed to be getting along fine. "Fear of humans..." she huffed "More like fear of pain."
Later in the afternoon, Molly went to put the new halter on and it fit like a dream. Stroking his nose, she smiled and whispered to him. "Look at you, so handsome. You've taken all of this just like a champ. I think it's time for a name.. My little Hero."

Making Friends wrote:Two weeks had passed of constant care of Hero. Medicine wasn't a hard task at all, and he trusted Molly thoroughly. But when she was away on business, or couldn't find the time to go down to him, her poor staff had to wrestle arm and leg with him just to put fresh hay in his bed. He would bay and cry, kick and paw until they left him alone. Though he never tried to hurt them, it was plain to see that he was scared to death of any person to come within ten feet of his stall that wasn't Molly. Having been gone for two days, she was unsure of what she would come home to find with Hero and her staff. When she pulled into the drive, one of her men was just coming out of the barn, wiping his forehead. "How's he been?" She asked. The man shook his head and huffed. "I have fought him every day three times a day trying to get all those pills down his throat. He won't stand for it." Molly felt a pang of worry. "Has he been taking them eventually though?" The man nodded to her relief. "Thanks, I'll go see him now." She walked into the barn and the moment he saw her Hero lit up. He looked almost giddy with relief at the sight of his person. Looking over him, she saw that he had gained a little weight and looked more vibrant and beautiful. "Hey buddy!" She cooed, entering the dreaded stall and stroking his neck. "You're looking much better. But we have got to figure out how to get you more comfortable when I'm not here." After a long time of thought, she finally came up with a solution. "You're going to get a friend," she said. "My boy August."
Molly called to one of the staff to put August in the small pen outside, and she hooked a lead rope to Hero's hater. Leading him out into the sunlight, she chuckled to herself, remembering what it was like to get him in there, and how much he had struggled with the little strength he had. And now he walked calmly beside her, trusting her every move. Molly led him in to the pen where August stood grazing. The second stallion raised his head and nickered to the new comer. Hero stiffened and bent his long ears back against his head. He swished his tail nervously and stayed as close to Molly as he could without trampling her. With a few sharp clicks with her tongue, August walked easily to the middle of the round pen and stood watching Hero and Molly. Slowly, Molly began to walk Hero around the pen, ever so slightly getting closer to August every go around, until finally they were flank on flank with each other. Hero bayed in fear and tried to walk away but Molly pulled hard and he stood obediently next to the stranger. Molly then led Hero away, and put him back into his stall.
For a week they trained this way, going in circles around August, then putting Hero away. And finally, Molly decided to take the lead off of Hero and let him into the pen with August. At first he wouldn't budge from the gate, standing with his back to the horse in the middle of the pen and his face down towards the ground, but after a while he decided to try walking nearer. Every so slightly coming closer every go around, Hero circled until he came flank in flank. And the rest was history, where August went Hero was following, all around the pen. When it was time to put the two away in their separate stalls, Hero nuzzled his new friend and trotted happily to the gate to be taken in. Molly sighed with relief. From now on, she could take her trips in peace, and know that with August there, the staff would have no trouble with her Hero.

Exercise Routine wrote:With Hero gaining weight and energy, and slowly becoming more used to the humans coming in and out of his stall, (even they weren't his Molly!) Molly decided that it was time he started exercising to make him even healthier.
Molly shuttered at the thought of trying to put a saddle on him, but it had to be done. Taking her favorite saddle and blanket from the tack room, she walked into Hero's stall. She slid her hand down his neck, and threw the blanket over him. She cringed, but he stood still, watching her every move. Next she tossed on the saddle, and began tightening it. He continued to sit still, and once the saddle was on correctly, he turned slowly awaiting the bridle. Molly smiled proudly and slipped the western bridle onto his nose and over his ears. Hero shook his short mane and waited to be taken out. With a sigh of relief, Molly led him by the bridle out into the sunshine, where she mounted easily. "Well, exercise is going to be much easier than I thought," she laughed, and ever so softly pressed her heels into Hero's sides. He broke into a soft trot, and he rode like a dream. She tested his galloping skills, his walking, he cantering, and his stopping. To her surprise, he did all of these perfectly. "You had to have been a show horse before you were abused, you're perfect." She said, bending down to pat his neck. Hero huffed and whinnied happily, trotting his way through the shaded trails.
After an hour of riding, Molly decided he needed some rest and took him back. She removed his saddle and bridle and put them away. "He is such a dream..." She whispered to herself, as she walked back to the house for a much needed shower.

Final Evaluation wrote:Molly had been working with Hero for 2 months now. He had improved drastically, and Molly couldn't be happier. Today, Dr. Kasey was coming to look over her work, and tell her his final evaluation, and give her a report to send in to the Kleeare rescue center. If all went well, she would be allowed to keep him, and he would stay safely at Stone Ridge with her. If something was wrong, such as his health wasn't up to parr, or she hadn't cared for him correctly, he would be taken back to the rescue center and placed up for adoption.
Walking into Hero's stall, she clipped the lead onto his halter. He whinnied at her and nuzzled under her arm. She laughed and led him into the small pen and tied him to the fence. He immediately began to eat the green sweet grass, and calmly stayed where he was tied. Dr. Kasey arrived, and met Molly at the pen. He gawked at the horse who stood inside. "Is that even the same horse??" He laughed, shaking Molly's hand but never looking away from the beautiful stallion. He entered the pen and walked up to Hero. He lifted his head and eyed the new man. Molly crossed her fingers and stood by. Hero began to tug skittishly at his lead, trying to run to his person's side to hide from this scary man. Dr. Kasey stretched out his hand and placed it firmly on Hero's nose. Hero rolled his eyes and groaned but stayed still. Molly let out her breath, that was a good sign, he wasn't going to kick. Dr. Kasey began his work. He rubbed his hand all over Hero's body, feeling his fur, checking his teeth and hooves, and making sure he was healthy. After an hour of work, Dr. Kasey grinned and turned to the awaiting Molly. "I don't know how you did it Molls, but he is in perfect shape. He's beautiful. I'll write out that evaluation for you over a cup of coffee if you don't mind." Molly felt ready to cry. Hero had been so brave through all of his training and she knew that he would be happy to live out the rest of his long life here on her ranch. "Absolutely," she said. "Just let me put him up."
After putting Hero away, she closed his door and began to walk towards the house. "He really grew fast...
In the Blink of an Eye."
