Calypso was only a foal when it happened, barely three days old. She could still remember the shrieking, howling wind, rattling through the barn. The shutters shook, the doors banged open and shut. Through the rain battered windows she could barely make out the shape of the old oak tree next to her owner's house. Lightening flashed and hit the ground next to the old oak, some of the horses in the barn reared and shrieked in panicked neighs. Several kicked at the stalls in blind panic as fire licked up the old wood of the oak. The ferocious winds caused the fire to spread like wildfire, and not even the torrential rains could put it out. Her old wise mother nuzzled her shoulder gently, trying to reassure her. But even little Calypso could see the fear behind her dear mother's wild, rolling eyes. The fire spread rapidly toward the barn, and the other horses renewed their fruitless attempts to escape the rickety old barn. Smoke and burning embers rapidly spread through the rafters and licked at the walls. The atmosphere became unbearable, the smoke choked in the horses' throats, the angry crackling of the fire spreading was the only noise that could be heard through the thick blanket of smoke. Calypso collapsed next to her mother on the dry hay, resigned to her fate. She lay her head on her mother's heaving flank and drifted into a painful, ferocious unconsciousness......
She had been the only survivor, and she had always blamed herself for being the only one to make it. Her sleep each night was wracked with ferocious nightmares of that night... Until she met her soul mate, whom encouraged her to move on and make her life worthwhile, instead of lamenting what could have been....
