Theon used to give off an air of arrogance and confidence that could be seen from a mile around. Externally, he was boastful, about things that were considered both minor and major. When he did something and did it well, he made it known to everyone and everything. He tended to be rather disruptive and nosy as well, not knowing when to keep out of things that really didn't concern him. He believed that everything should be all about him, he liked to be the center of attention, and when he was good at something, he knew it and he wasn't afraid to flaunt it. Internally, however, everything was and is different. He's very unsure of himself, and that's why he made it such a big deal when he got something right or did something better than average, because that means he surpassed any low expectations he set for himself. He's constantly seeking approval, mostly because he never got it when he was a colt. In a herd what he needs most is acceptance, but with humans he needs approval and reward or else he feels like he has, in some way, disappointed them.
Of course, he was like this in the beginning of his life, when he was a big younger. Unfortunate events in his life have dramatically altered the way he acts, and the way others see him. After being stuck for some time at a completely amoral barn that cared nothing for their horses, Theon's once narcissistic and over confident demeanor all but vanished. He grew withdrawn, and most social interactions with humans and horses alike scare him now. He is easily spooked, by really anything at all. Loud noises, storms, sudden movements, a change in scenary- anything. They get him going and he's extremely hard to calm down. Despite this though, he rarely, rarely gets violent. In fact, he's extremely submissive and that's out of pure fear alone. When being ridden, and even out in his pasture, he'll bolt if he sees something that freaks him out at all, and that's just about everything. He shies away from human contact, and most horses can sense his weakness and some will proceed to push him around because of it. He'll never fight back, most of the time he'll just slink around in the corner, head low, and try to be ignored by everyone. This drastic shift in behavior during his short life is both worrisome and plain unhealthy, and the goal right now is to try and get him back to the confident, boisterous stallion with a big ego he once was.
Fears;;
There's not much in the world that Theon dislikes. Most of what he dislikes he just fears. However, there are menial things that he has aversions towards that he doesn't fear. One of those things are crossties. He hates the way they make him feel trapped, and though sometimes he'll break them accidentally, he usually only does so because something that he fears spooked him. He also dislikes being tacked up, and while he's touchy all over, he's particularly bad about the bridle. He refuses to let humans but a bit in his mouth so most of the time they have to use a hackamore or just use clip-on reins. He also dislikes littler things like mud, hay bale twine, and having his hooves cleaned and being looked over by a vet or farrier. Likes;;
As shocking as it may be, there actually are a few, choice things in this world that Theon genuinely likes. He likes approval, for one, in fact that's probably what he's most hungry for. It makes him feel important, and like he's not a disappointment. Of course he likes the typical things too, like grazing and hay and treats, but despite being very touch shy, he's extremely fond of being groomed. Getting mats brushed out of his fur, and having his mane and tail combed through are some of the best feelings in the world, given that the groomer knows what they're doing. However, he doesn't like his feet being picked, though he'll reluctantly let someone he trusts do it. He also likes being alone, in his own stall, in the own pasture- whatever it may be so long as he has time and space to himself.
