her story ;;
It had been a long day at the rescue, which was now nearly overflowing with cats. It seemed to Aki like everyone was dropping off a pet they had found on the streets, but there were not nearly enough willing adopters. She hated watching the cages fill up, the sad eyes staring back at her while she worked. She didn't own any cats, but she loved them dearly. She was afraid to adopt one, fearing that somehow it wouldn't end up liking her, and she would be a poor owner. She much preferred to be able to take care of the ones in need for a time, but was even happier when she watched a homeless animal reach a new family. The joy on the faces of all involved was, in her mind, the best sight to be seen.
Many cats meant many cages to be cleaned, and with the other volunteers sick with the winter bug, she had been left to clean cages. Now tired after a long day's work, she flopped down on the couch with something between a sigh and a yawn, and closed her eyes. It was quiet in the house, too quiet, so there was only one logical solution. Without bothering to open her eyes, she felt around the couch for the remote to the television set. At this point, she'd be happy with anything- as long as it wasn't silent! Her paw had just reached the remote when a small sound squeaked from across the room, and she nearly jumped out of her skin.
"Mew!"
She sat up with a start, her first thought that a masked killer had made it's way into her apartment and was about to kill her. She glanced around for a moment before being satisfied that there was no killer with an ax waiting to cut off her head. She tried to calm herself down, the TV now forgotten. If she hadn't known better, she would have thought she recognized the noise. It sounded like the squeak of a kitten! She nearly laughed at herself for thinking that. "Apparently you spend too much time around cats, Aki! Now you're hearing them! Soon enough, you'll be a crazy cat lady." she chuckled, though she was still a little freaked out at the noise. "How about I get some tea? Tea would be good."
She stood up, and walked over to the small kitchen. She was just about to fill the pot when she heard it again, more defined this time. "Meow!" "What was that?! Who's there?" Aki called, into the dimly lit apartment. "Mrrrow!" the voice responded. Slowly, Aki began to walk through the apartment. Whatever it was, it had to be somewhere!
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw movement. "Hello?!" There was no answer this time, but she saw the movement again- her messenger bag was seemingly vibrating! She grabbed a newspaper, and rolled it up. Something was in there. She crouched down, nudged the flap open with her newspaper. Heart racing, she saw a...
A fuzzy grey kitten?
What?
It took her a moment of stroking the kitten she had found to realize what had happened. Her bag was in the room when she was letting the cats out and cleaning their cages. This kitten must have been one of the new deliveries, and had crawled into her bag right before closing time and rode with her on the bus home. Aki grinned. She had never thought of owning a cat, but this one? Perhaps she could give it a try.
The next day, she brought the kitten home in the evening with her, this time in a travelling cage. "Welcome to your new home, Ninja!" she introduced, letting the new kitten out to enjoy it's new life.
"Mrrrow!" was the kitten's joyful response.
