Stories
Well, this pretty little gal is called Black Sky Morning, and she is a pretty, light black in color. She was once out in the wild, free, and she seemed to be happy to be just right where she was and not have dealings with people. But then, one day, the smallish mare perked up her ears, swiveling them as she heard the sound of a helicopter. She reared up and ran back to the herd that she had wandered a few feet from. Only moments later, there were the sounds of terrified whinnies as the helicopter came down to a lower altitude, banking towards the horses to scare them towards where the 'trap' was set, waiting for them like some sort of predator...As soon as the mustangs realized that there were two legs and big scary 'monster' machines there, they attempted to turn back round and were met with the front of the copter. Not wanting to deal with this, they ran again and in their haste they were found themselves in the 'trap', and then were being loaded up, albeit difficultly, into trailers. The black mare screamed and squealed as she kicked and tried to get free. Some of these were brought to the Cottonwood Wild Horse Ranch, the others were taken...elsewhere.
The red head woke bright and early as she so often must these days with the five or more horses which always had a need to demand of her attentions. She got dressed, ate breakfast, brushed her teeth and hair, and rushed out to the barn to do her morning chores. When she was done, one of the barn hands named Harvey told her they were going to Cottonwood to get her a Mustang to train. She hopped up and down excitedly and with a big smile she ran to the truck. They soon had arrived at the other Ranch, and departed the truck to look at the mustangs. She took one look at mare number 6194, and knew that this was the one she wanted. She found out the mare was from Utah, upon further questioning, and said she had family out there. They managed to get the frightened, wild animal into the trailer and drove on home. Harvey helped wrangle the mare into the empty stall, and there she stayed the rest of that night and the next morning. The first few days, Jess just sort of walked by as much as possible, talking to herself and then singing, and eventually putting a hand up, that at first she backed away from, but after awhile the mare seemed to become curious about and appeared to be catching the scent of as she flared her nostrils.
The day after the mare did so, the young lady began to toss bits of hay into the stall and see if Black Sky Morning would eat them. At first, the mare seemed keen on staying as far from the human scent as possible, but when Jess passed by on rounds later that day she saw the mare nibbling and picking at it. The day after, she was able to get into the stall, but had to go slow because the mare was still fearful and it took about half the day for her to get in. Previously, she had used a special mechanism found, to get the food and water to her. But now she was in, and she brought food and filled the water bucket. On the Fourth, she was unable to spend much time with the mare as it was the Fourth of July and her family had to go to a party. They had not gotten back until midnight, or well after. On the fifth, the redhead went into the stall and the second time she did this Black Sky came a bit closer to her. The day after that, she attempted a touch and the mare shied so she backed it off and left her the rest of the day. And the day after, the attempts failed again. On the eighth, she tried in the morning but the mare still did not trust her, even as she took it slower. In the afternoon, attempts ended with the mare in the corner. That evening and the next morning were both failures, and the mare even balked a bit the next morning. Later that day, she still wouldn't come near the hand but she stayed out of the corner at least. On the tenth and eleventh, she was still loathe to let the hand touch, but she came forward slowly bit by bit. But that day after, her brother decided to go by yelling, and the mare ran into the corner and would not move...On the thirteenth, Black Sky was convinced it was safe to come near again, and the next day she moved up almost right beside the girl, surprising her a bit. On the fifteenth, she had a carrot with her and it seemed an incentive, as the mare pulled back but once she saw that juicy carrot she moved her head forward a little. The next day, she came in and the pretty thing was hiding in the corner. Jess heard the tractor, and with soft words and coaxing she eventually got the mare away from the corner.
