Blame is a coward but self-righteous
A funny little creature hiding out in me
Hate is power with a price tag
A funny little creature screaming out in me
Listen to me
Fear is a liar but he's been right before
If you fight your shadow, you'll get lost in a war
Ambitions a champ, but he's also greedy
Drunk or sober he always wants more
I always want more
I always want more
Lust is beauty in a body bag
A funny little thing that's screaming "Just use me!"

About the Trainer #9362

I should begin like any sensible person would... with myself. I am Aspyn Cider Pine. What? It's not a bad name, just a very tree-like name. I am one hundred and ten percent a country, tomboy, cowgirl. I love the outdoors and nature like it's nobody's business. As a fresh college graduate with a double major in business and biology, I inherited my pea-paws country house and ranch when he passed last year. This ranch is home not only to me, but some good ol-boy farm hands, a white hawk, a dog, a few horses, some cats, and a few wild critters that call this beautiful place home. We are called the Mountain Pine Ranch, as we are nestled in between the beautiful mountains of Utah on a 500 acre strip of heaven. You may notice some odd comings and goings done by some critters, to clue you in on that I'm a Wildlife Rehabilitater. This means I help wild animals get back on their feet after a run in with man or nature and return them to the wild when they are well. That's enough about me for now. Come with me on my journey and welcome to Mountain Pine Ranch!

First Day #9362

Postby Aspyn » Tue Jun 24, 2014 3:01 am

Day One
It began on a day like any other, just like all the ones before. I woke up and had my signature orange juice and cottage cheese breakfast and headed out the door to check on my horse, Kimber, in the luscious green pasture with Fawn at my heels. A thunderous noise rumbled in the distance as we reached the pasture'a gate. "Fawn, what is that?" I asked the dog as she laid her ears back and raised her hackles. The noise grew louder and more distinct. "A helicopter!" I exclaimed as it came into view flying low to the mountain. "But what is it doing...?" It was flying so low I was scared for it's pilot and was positive it was crashing. That is, I was scared until I realized what it was doing... "Mustangs!" That's what it was doing the annual mustang round up, which I despised. Surely there were more humane ways to bring in mustangs, chasing them down on horse back for example to give the healthy ones a chance to get away and not get hurt. Just as I thought that very thought, the world turned slow motion... A gorgeous palomino, appaloosa rocketed off the edge of a small ledge and went down.

"SAM!!!" I yelled for one of the ranches many hands. "Saddle up and bring the medical kit!"
"Yes'm, Miss Pine," he said as he reacted without question and went to fetch his roping horse.
I whistled for Kimber and sprinted to grab a bridle and saddle from the huge, wooden barn.
"So where we headed to in such a hurry little miss?" Sam questioned as I swung into my saddle.
"A mustang might be injured on the mountain and I would like to see what our options are regarding it."
"Ah... Another mustang?" He flatly questioned as I left him in a cloud of dust. He, loyal as always, followed me up to the ridge where I last saw the mustang.
•••
"Really miss, it's almost sunset and we really should be heading home," Sam was almost to the point of begging and the greying man never did such a thing. After a full day of riding and searching, we had come up with nothing. No tracks, no hairs, no mustang.
"Alright, I giv... Woah!" I exclaimed as Kimber spooked. "What are you doing, Horse?!" She whinnied and stretched out her neck against the tie-down to smell the air and flick her ears. She began pawing and cried out again with Sam's mount doing the same.
"Well, ya reckon that we should let them lead us? Maybe they found it," Sam asked. I trust his logic so I nodded and loosened the reigns.

More quickly than I would have thought possible, Kimber found the mustang. On the ground was a muddy, traumatized creature, barely distinguishable as a horse.
"Easy fella," I cooed as the whites of his eye became visible to me. He was shaking so badly, I didn't believe he would be able to stand.
"Sam, please see if you can ease the rope over his neck," I asked of my loyal hand in a gentle voice.
He attempted twice, with the mustang thrashing and shaking his both times to remove the rope easing over his mussle. That's when Kimber leaned over and touched noses with him. His shakes immediately calmed down. She touched her nose to his flank and blew warm, moist air over his back, then touched his withers. His trembling began again, and from the back of Kimber, I didn't know what was happening. Then he stood.
"Miss...? The plan?" Sam questioned me.
"Do you believe he will follow Kimber?" I asked.
"Who knows, but we can leave the gait open tonight to see?"
"Okay, let's go." With that we set off at a slow walk back to the ranch.
•••
When we got back to the ranch at dusk, there was no sign of the mustang.
The gait remained open to our ranch that night.

Highlights:
Mustang was located and met Kimber.
It is noted the mustang is male.
The mustang does not appreciate ropes.

Day Two
Rising with the sun, I crawled out of my bed with jean blanket and made my way to the kitchen. Upon arriving at the kitchen window, I saw what I could have seemingly only dreamed of seeing. The mustang was under my tall oak tree!
Managing to control my excitement and keep Fawn inside, I snuck out the back door to close the front gate.
Once the front gate was securely closed... "WAHOO!!! SAM!!!" I yelled at the top of my lungs! "Come and see our visitor!"
"Little missy," he mumbled stumbling out the door and into his boots,"Don't ya know it's no good to yell around a scared 'stang?"
"Sorry, Sam. But what should we do now that we have him and everything is going to be so perfect, I can't wait to train him, and ride him, and be with him, and..."
"Miss, slow down!" He said and I was cut off. "First we have to get him into a pasture. I'd suggest the 5 acre one on the south side of the barn. It has a stream, incase he doesn't know about cattle tanks, plenty of room to move, because I'm sure he hates closed spaces, and quite a few trees to shade him."
"Excellent idea, but that gate's tiny... How will I get him in?"
"Maybe tie Little Kimber in there, it seemed to work last time..."
"True, but I'm going to need the front gate opened and Kimber today. I need to go check on the cattle and look for any late spring calves."
"Huh.. and you're going to need me and the other hands for this job too aren't you?"
"Yes sir, Mr. Sam."
"What if we brought all the horses in today and locked them in their stables, but opened the southern windows for them. Maybe then he could be drawn into the pasture."
"Hummm... yes that could certainly work."
•••
The cattle were super skittish and trouble some today. I came home with Kimber; we were exhausted, dusty, and covered in the "lovely" smell of fresh cow patties. Though the day was long, we got everything necessary accomplished and came home to a nice surprise. Just like Sam said, the mustang was in the south pasture.
"Thank the heavens!" I breathed out a sigh of relief. One thing finally was easy and had gone perfectly. I went to lock the gate and soon after the mustang galloped over to greet my Little Kim. They touched noses and whinnied. I slowly leaned toward the mustang and extended my hand. Kimber forgotten, he bolted to the far edge of the pasture.
"Huh... Maybe tomorrow." I told Kimber as I pulled her along to the barn.

Highlights:
The mustang did, in fact, follow us home.
He did move himself into the South Pasture.
He greeted Kimber and they touched noses.
He ran away from my extended hand.

Day Three
The first day of having my mustang dawned with promise, and a crisp breeze for early summer. I picked up some bright red apples and jogged out to greet Kimber and find the mustang in the South Pasture.
I chose not to bother him, but to open Kimber's window to the south pasture and read underneath it. The mustang, however chose to stay on the opposite side of the pasture most of the day. He occasionally stepped forward to study me before retreating to the south-east side by the creek.

Highlights:
The mustang did make a move towards me.

Day Four
Sleeping in was a very good idea. Apparently my tough, little mustang thought so too. After checking the garden for any early carrots or turnips, I headed over to greet Kimber. My usually calm, perfect horse was feeling a tad underworked and a little rowdy.
"Wanna do a quick pasture workout girl?" I asked the horse and went to fetch her beautiful, western bridle. All tacked up, I walked her to the East Pasture.
"Alright, girl. Do your thing" I whispered to her. And, graceful as ever: She flew.
•••
We gently trotted home on the western most trail, which passes the south pasture. One of the most extraordinary things happened as we reached the tip of the southern pasture. I heard a whinny.
"Haha! Look whose under the oak trees and coming this way."
The horse from under the oak tree started galloping toward my Kimber. She started high prancing to show him who was boss and he slowed.
I allowed her to stop and touch noses with him. She pawed the ground and so did he. I have her the reigns. And once again we flew down the path. They raced nose and nose along the length of the fence to the very end!
•••
Kimber was back in her stall with the window open and being pampered by me. When a mussle edged over the door.
"Hey kiddo." I told the mustang.
And got a snort in response.
"Well, I'll leave y'all to it g'night."

Highlights:
The mustang and Kimber are competitive.
He shows submission to Kimber.

Day Five
Today I decided to do just what I love to do. Read beside my horse under the oak tree.
When I walked out of my ranch house, I found a surprise. The mustang was beside Kimber's door. As I approached, he trotted off a ways. To my great amusement, Kimber called out to him and he walked slowly back to her!
"Kimber, do you want out?" And with that I released her from her confinement.
She bolted and looped the pasture with the tough mustang playing and kicking up her heels. Then she ran back to me as if asking me for approval. I chuckled as she laid down beside me. The mustang checked me out then laid down opposite of Kimber and he put his head on her back.
Curious, I began petting Kimber's withers. Then slowly made my way down her back. I got closer and closer to the mustangs face. I let him sniff me by each time slowly moving my hand. Something I considered amazing happened next, I touched the mustangs nose. He breathed out slowly tickling my hand with warm air. We all stayed like that together for the rest of the day.

Highlights:
Kimber and the mustang work well together without any of my help.
I touched the mustang!
