Prompt 10
They found it hidden behind one large box or another-- but they would never know for sure. Nobody quite understood how, but the chickens returned with a hefty box and no real explanation. They assumed the birds had poked around behind boulders, but they could've scuba dived in the lava or... honestly plucked it out of someone's back yard. The possibilities were endless, really... but at the end of the day, here the chest was-- beckoning the party, daring them to open it.
Abacus approached it, gently tapping at it and running his paws along the wooden surface. "Wood in the lava lands?" He asked aloud with uncertainty, "That's eccentric... and for some reason not on fire..."
"I find that hard to believe." Elizabeth muttered from behind him, peering over his shoulder to eye the non-flaming flammable that was placed before them. The two exchanged glances. Belial was asleep, and they knew that had he been awake-- he surely would've wanted in on the spoils.
"Shall we agree to see eye-to-eye for once?" Elizabeth proposed, extending a hand for a shake of honor.
"If it means a fifty-fifty split? Absolutely." Abacus smirked devilishly and took her hand, giving it an energetic shake. They eyed the box now with one goal in mind.
Abacus hoisted the thing up and cracked it on the ground a couple times-- then a boulder-- then he tried to smash it over the chickens but thankfully the birds were too fast for the knight. He fell over, panting on the hot ground. "This isn't working..." He groaned.
Elizabeth fussed with the lock and a bobby pin, turning it this way and that-- though to no avail. With each pin she broke she grew more restless and irritable-- and with the last pin she had she couldn't manage anything worth noting. She tossed the box a few feet away from her and grumbled, "I can't do it either." She admitted grudgingly.
The two fell asleep, not remembering the presence of their sleeping rogue-- who may not have been sleeping at all. Needless to say, he found his way into that box alright. What was inside, you may ask? Well, he'll never tell-- after all, then he'd have to split it with his teammates.

day 10 prompt.
x. mystery
nisha, aria, amalie
Taking a break from the relative safety of Raffi's training, our heroes seem to have gotten lost in their strolls amongst the lava pools! However, maybe this will turn out to be a blessing in disguise...
A box lay in their path.
A simple, wooden box, its golden keyhole sparkling in the red light.
What was strange was that it was in the Lavalands, lying on burning hot ground, in between scorching lava pools- and yet, it seemed undamaged in any way. No burn marks from the heat (the same couldn't be said for the kalons), no scratches from fire chickens, and no broken parts from being stepped on by lost travellers. That's how they'd found the box, after all; Aria had tripped right over it as the three had been arguing on how to get back to Raffi's.
Undaunted, Amalie reaches out to pick up the box. Her own fire chicken, Egg, chirps indignantly as it is dumped on the ground in favour of the wooden chest. The surface of the box was oddly cool to the touch, like it had been sitting in someone's room instead of out here with the fire and lava. Amalie shakes the box- a child testing Christmas presents - and it rattles loudly, giving away the presence of a single, solid object.
"I wonder what's in it?" Aria wonders aloud. She places her own paw - more tentatively - on the wood, as if she could sense what was inside.
"Probably a rock." Nisha deadpans. "Now can we focus on more important things, like figuring out where the heck we are?"
Amalie seems unconvinced by Nisha's explanation. "What if it is treasure?" The wonder in her voice makes Nisha feel slightly nauseous.
"What if it's a rock?" Nisha mimicks. This time, it's Aria who rolls her eyes. "It's obviously a magical chest, Nisha; only you would be lazy enough to put a rock in it." Nisha clutches a hand to her heart in mock pain. "Oh, you wound me! And here I thought we were friends..." she moans dramatically. But she knows she isn't going to get her partners to drop the box - literally and figuratively - anytime soon, so she sighs and inspects it herself.
"Well, we don't have a key so we can't open it. Can we go home now?" Nisha whines. She didn't give the box much of a chance, really; she was still pretty sure it held something useless like rocks, or jewellery. (Yes, she is wearing a ring right now, but that's only because it contains the earth crystal and might possibly save the world.)
"We can't give up that easily!" Aria withdraws her magic wand - a gift from Raffi, much more convenient than her staff - and taps it on the box. "I found an unlocking spell in one of the witch's books, back in the forest..."
"You had time to read a book?" Amalie asks. "While we were supposed to be searching for the crystal?"
Aria reddens. "I got distracted, okay? Now let me see if this works." Closing her eyes, she mutters an incantation that sounds like complete gibberish to Nisha; Amalie recognizes it as one of the witch's spells indeed. The tip of Aria's wand glows pink, and the box glows in the same hue as well. It illuminates for a mere second before the glow fades away, almost like it was absorbed into the wood itself.
Aria tries the lid of the box. It's still locked. She frowns in disappointment.
"Okay, we tried magic on the magic box. It didn't work. Are you guys done now?" Nisha was never going to admit that she'd also been hopeful the box would open. Only to prove her rock theory right, anyway.
"No, there must be another way..." Aria hums, deep in thought. Amalie, still holding the box, glances down at her abandoned chicken. It seems pretty comfortable on the hot ground, the flames on its back as lively as ever. An idea hatches in her mind like a baby fire chicken.
"How about Egg?" Amalie says. Nisha and Aria stare at her like she's grown two heads. Three heads.
"You want us... to fry eggs on the box? Call me crazy, but I don't see how that will help." Nisha says, sarcasm dripping from every syllable. Amalie shakes her head. "No," she says slowly, like they're the two-headed ones, "we can use Egg's fire to burn the wood."
Aria shrugs. "I guess it's worth a shot." Desperate times call for desperate fire chicken measures.
Amalie lowers the box onto Egg's flaming back. The chicken's eyes, which had been closed in sleepy slits, pop open at the new weight on his back. For a few seconds, he seems to be contemplating what his life has come to, then his eyes close again. The box is unaffected by the flames; the fire licks and leaps around the chest's sides, but to no avail. Carefully, Amalie retrieves the box from the dozing chicken. It's still strangely cold in her paws.
"There is no other option." Amalie decides. "We must find the key."
"Yeah." Aria agrees.
"And you couldn't have decided this earlier?" Nisha grumbles.
"Nope." Aria says, infuriatingly cheerful. She grins at Nisha. "Now, Nisha, since you didn't help us with opening the box, why don't you carry it back?"
"Wha-" Nisha isn't given the chance to protest; Amalie deposits the chest into her arms and picks up her chicken, who stays asleep.
"You guys will pay for this." she says, not an ounce of seriousness in her voice. Neither Amalie nor Aria take her threats to heart.
"Sure." Aria says. "Now, enough wasting time; let's get back to Raffi's." She sticks her tongue out at Nisha, who shoots her a look filled with the knives the purple kalon so loves to throw around.
"I think we should go this way." Amalie says, completely missing Aria's smirk and Nisha's glare and pointing back the way they'd come.
"But this way might be a shortcut." Aria reasons, gesturing to the opposite direction.
"A shortcut, or another way to get lost?" Nisha argues.
And so, the bantering continues as the three heroes walk on, a mysterious box now in their possession.
Whatever could be inside it?
1006 words.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
[ Our heroes have chanced across a treasure chest, but it’s locked! ]
Lis is the first to step up. She brings down her sword on the chest, but it doesn’t so much as leave a mark. She stabs the lock a number of times, but the shiny metal doesn’t let up. Finally, she jams her sword in the crack of the chest and tries to pry it open; She’s aware this is a long shot, but this is ridiculous! She’ll break her sword before the chest opens.
Lis thinks for a moment before inquiring if Onion can make a sort of explosive. Onion’s face lights up; In the lavalands, it seems there’s a lot of explosive material! He whips something up, and places it in the lock. It’s blown straight off! But what’s the thing in the chest?? Our heroes aren’t really sure. It’s sort of egg shaped but it’s hard as a rock. Guess the explosion didn’t damage it, then. Onion shrugs and takes it with him.
Phew, that took awhile! Especially for so little reward. Reuben suggests that next time they just let him pick the lock.
Lis and Onion both yell at him for not having mentioned he can pick locks.

→ Kalons Used In Prompt : Pip (( Non-owner, referring to Pip as a ''she'' )) ←────────────────────────────────────────────────
Pip wasn't paying attention for the third time within two minutes, and tripped over a treasure chest. "At least it's not a puddle of lava." Pip mumbled, brushing off the tiny black specks of dirt she had on herself. She turned to the chest. It seemed fairly old, and unable to stand the lava and hot grounds in the area. It seemed to be falling apart, and she could get a glimpse of a shiny silver object from a tiny hole in the chest. Pip was curious what was inside. It seemed to be fairly easy to open, due to how old it was and the fact it seemed to be falling apart. She felt the chest, and it felt oddly cold. And wet. Pip squealed. Maybe there was something in there to cool her down in this heat. After searching the chest, Pip spotted a lock. A rusty, old lock. Pip fumbled around with the lock for a moment, before coming up with an idea. Maybe she could put the lock in lava for a bit... then open the chest. Pip carefully walked to the nearest lava source, holding the chest tightly. She kneed to the ground and put the lock into the lava. The lava gurgled a bit, but within a few moments, the lock seemed to fall apart from the chest. Before whatever was in the chest could slip out, Pip brought the chest back up to her side. There were charred markings where the lock once was, and it seemed to be steaming. Pip let it cool for a bit before opening the chest. Inside was a handful of... "Melted ice cubes? But.. they should be completely melted in this heat. And how the heck did this get here?" Pip exclaimed. "Oh whatever. At least I found out what was in the chest. It wasn't good, but it was something. I guess."

Chapter Ten: pickpocket
__________________________
Characters::
Maua || lvl 199 assassin || 29 y/o
Maua is always angry or annoyed at something. She's rather sarcastic and kills with no guilt. She seems to be the main adventurer in the group. She's pretty much a jerk
Sierra || lvl 5 medic || 12 y/o
Sierra is pretty much useless. She complains a lot and is always scared about something. She can shoot a bow pretty well though? And she makes all of their medicinal remedies!
Melanie || lvl 10 knight || 27 y/o
Mel is nearly as useless as Sierra, originally a bartender, Maua forced her to come along on the journey. She's pretty sweet and talkative though!
__________________________
A glistening treasure chest loomed in front of the travelers. They took it in, curious as to what could be inside. Sierra ran towards it, happy to have found such a treat. "Lets open it!" Melanie grabbed the kit's shirt, pulling her back. "It could be some kind of trap. Let Maua open it." Maua coughed on her water, choking. After her coughing fit had ended, she growled. "Of course, because I always have to do the dirty work," she snarled, resisting the urge to punch all four of Melanie's arms. Melanie shrugged, grinning. Oh, how fun it was to annoy Maua. She sat down on the rock surface, away from the bubbling lava and pulled out some water. She handed it to Sierra. They watched Maua curiously. Maua approached the chest, wiggling the old, rusted lock. She raised an eyebrow. Turning to Melanie, she sighed, "Is this really necessary? We can just leave it here. It'll take an hour to open." Melanie frowned, "Yeah- but what if a crystal's in there? What if there's gold?" The corner of her lip twitches up in a smile. Maua sighed. "Give me a bobby pin of yours." Melanie frowned, "No. They were my grandmothers!" Maua chuckled, "Fine. I guess we won't open this chest then. Thank goodness." She moved back towards the horses. Sierra tugged Melanie's arm. "Pleassssseeeeeee." Melanie sighed, and handed Maua the pin. She began to work at the lock while her lazy companions ate the last fire chicken Maua had hunted down.
About an hour later, the lock popped open. Maua tossed he Bobby pin to the side. It rolled into the fire. "It's open!"she called. Melanie trotted up to her. "So- where's my bobby pin?" Maua gasped, watching as it rolled into the lava. "Umm.. sorry." She winced as Melanie punched her, and hard. "It was an accident! Gosh!" She moved away as the pair looked into the chest. It was a glowing red orb. Melanie put it in her hands. Instantly it turned into a glowing red bobby pin. She passed it to Sierra, who got a lightweight piece of armor and a stuffed animal. Maua got a dagger. It was all glowing and red. It seemed to have a magical aura. The travelers would soon learn of its powers.
