    ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

    Light. Not sunlight or even moonlight, but not the blinding illumination of the lavalands either, and certainly not the crackling glow of the fiery torch used to guide the way in the forest. This light was something different. It wasn't warm, but it wasn't unwelcoming. It felt magical, in one sense whimsical but eerie in another.

    The light, it belonged to crystals, crystals that lit up just about every inch of what would have otherwise been a dark cave. They weren’t particularly bright, but there were many of them to sufficiently shed light within the space.

    Three sets of footsteps echoed against the cave walls. Intrigued eyes ran along the scene, dancing from cyan and violet crystals to fiery ones, green ones, and tangerine. Some were more colors than one, more colors than the rainbow even held.

    Lis stretched her arms out to each side of her, halting Reuben and Onion to a stop behind her. “This place is surreal,” she voiced in a hushed tone. Was she afraid of waking what might hide in the cavernous cracks in the walls, or was she only in awe of the site before her? Her back popped a multitude of times before she lowered her arms back to her sides. “I kind of expect to find fairies here.” The rosy haired kalon started walking once more, her teammates following.

    A subtle giggle traveled through the air as Onion covered his mouth. “Yeah, fairies. I can imagine they’d like it here...” He clasped his hands together in front of him. “I met one once, but... ah, we had to part ways...”

    The mood turned a tad sullen. Adventurers liked to use that term, “part ways,” and maybe many people didn’t entirely understand what that meant, but other adventurers? They knew those words like the back of their hands.

    “I’m sorry.” Lis glanced behind her, and her eyes briefly met with Onion’s before she returned her gaze forward. “I want to meet a fairy. I want to ask what it’s like to have wings. Oh, um, hold on...” She hushed the guys, and their footsteps stopped. “I hear running water.” A moment of silence passed before Lis began leading the party ahead.

    They stopped at sort of pond. The water glistened, sparkled, and it lightly rippled as a thin stream ran into the pool. Lis’ movements were slower than usual as she sat, not because she was tired but because she was relaxed. She placed a hand in the water, and as it turned out to be rather freezing, she yanked her arm away. “Heh, it’s really cold...! But good for a drink, if anyone wants one. This is the clearest water I’ve seen in weeks... It doesn’t seem to be affected by the kingdom’s curse. Actually, everything in here seems... strangely pure...” Lis trailed off. This was truly an odd place, being so clean when just outside there was a world of havoc and mayhem.

    Onion took a seat, as did Reuben. Reuben was normally quiet, but here, in this moment, it was if he wasn’t even there. He wasn’t one for scenery; People and creatures were the bigger appeal to him. With this being said, the crystal cavern he was in had left him in a near trance. So much so that he, who was the most cautious in this group of three, almost didn’t consider the threat of potential monsters. Almost. He cleared his throat. “We shouldn’t sit around for too long; We have to be on our guard. We don’t know what’s here.”

    Both Onion and Lis flinched at Reuben’s voice, at a higher sound level than anything they’d heard for a little while. He was speaking in a normal tone, but it sounded amplified in this virtually soundless cove. Lis shrugged. “Do you hear anything?” Everyone paused to listen to the ambient sounds. There was only the water in front of them, paired with the occasional drip from water running off of stalactites above. “Well, personally, I don’t hear anything,” Lis continued, “but if you’re worried, we’ll keep moving.” Lis smirked at Reuben, a teasing sort of look.

    Reuben shook his head. “No, it’s fine. If we’re eaten alive though, it’s wholeheartedly your fault.” Onion and Lis both began to laugh, amused by a comment neither of them were even sure was meant to be funny. Reuben’s muscles loosened, and a smile even tugged at his lips.

    The three kalons sat along the edge of the pond, and they talked, and they laughed, and they forgot about their worries and all possibilities of creatures lurking behind corners.

    The forest had been dead silent, and this made it scary. This cave was just as noiseless, but it made it peaceful. The lavalands were bright, but blindingly so. This cave wasn’t dim, but there still were shadows. This new land held a more comforting aura than previous destinations, despite the off smell and the cold that threatened to pierce each kalon’s heart.

    They didn’t notice the cold.
    They should have noticed the cold.

day 13 prompt.

xiii. a whole new world
nisha, aria, amalie

The first thing Amalie noticed when they entered the mountain tunnel were the crystals. Like stalactites and stalagmites, they covered the ceilings and floors and also everything in between. From lava red to sky blue, sunny yellow to rose pink, it seemed the entire world’s colors were contained in the sparkling gems. They turned the area into a natural, stunning room of light, colored rays bouncing off the walls like a disco. An elegant disco, if such a thing ever existed.

The first thing Aria noticed as the kalons continued through the cave was the water- the clear, cold, blue water. It was a sight she would have taken for granted a year, a month, a few days ago, but now, after their journeys in the water-devoid Lavalands, she couldn’t be more grateful for the liquid. It trickled down from the ceilings, ran through every crack in the rock, formed shallow puddles on the floor- it was everywhere. Aria could feel the wetness already beading up in her fur, feel the steam hanging in the air like a damp towel.

The first thing Nisha noticed wasn’t the beauty of the caves. It wasn’t the fact that there was water in them. Trust her partners to be so sentimental about this new area. No, the first thing Nisha noticed was the sudden – and welcome – drop in temperature. She was more than happy to leave the fire and the volcanos and the scorching heat behind them; she definitely wasn’t complaining about the cool interior of the cave. It was like having a cold shower after a hot summer’s day- relieving, relaxing, and so, so satisfying.

The tunnel the three partners had been walking in opened up into a full-blown cavern. Crystals still hung from every surface, and the water puddles had expanded into good-sized lakes. The air was heavy with moisture and tension as the kalons realized where they were.

They had reached the Crystal Coves.

Which meant that their quest for the water crystal had begun.

Amalie brushed her fingers against the fire crystal, the team’s most recent find, which was currently a pendant on her necklace. Aria rubbed her wind crystal wristlet- a nervous habit. Nisha just shot an annoyed look at the earth crystal that sat on a ring on her finger; she didn’t particularly want to wear it, but she physically could not take it off.

The teammates glanced at each other. Nisha spoke for them all:

“It’s time to find the last crystal.”

416 words.

      Chapter Thirteen: crystals galore
      __________________________
      Characters::
      Maua || lvl 199 assassin || 29 y/o
      Maua is always angry or annoyed at something. She's rather sarcastic and kills with no guilt. She seems to be the main adventurer in the group. She's pretty much a jerk

      Sierra || lvl 5 medic || 12 y/o
      Sierra is pretty much useless. She complains a lot and is always scared about something. She can shoot a bow pretty well though? And she makes all of their medicinal remedies!

      Melanie || lvl 10 knight || 27 y/o
      Mel is nearly as useless as Sierra, originally a bartender, Maua forced her to come along on the journey. She's pretty sweet and talkative though!

      __________________________
      Maua sighed as they entered a section of caverns. Raafi still on her mind, she brushed the thought away. Her little crush would have to wait. Maua took in the gleaming crystals. They were simply gorgeous. They were a broad spectrum of colors. Water dropped from the cave ceiling, and Maua soon realized how little space there really was. She began to become claustrophobic. So, she focused on the crystals. Some were rainbow. All of them shined beautifully. Some shone fire red, some sunshine yellow, some sky blue. Her favorites were the blossom pink ones. Maua brushed a hand against one of them, water brushing onto her hands. The crystals were surprisingly cold. Or maybe Maua was just too used to the extreme heat of the lavalands. Maua fingered at the wind crystal in her pocket. Each of them had been responsible for one crystal. Melanie had chosen to wear the fire crystal as a fashionable necklace. Sierra had worn the earth crystal as a pin on her shirt. Maua had simply chosen to stuff hers in her pocket. Now, they only had one crystal left to find before they could save Kalokairi. Maua leaned against a rock as her friends explored. She fingered at a crystal, and said quietly, "These would fetch a pretty penny..." she moved her hand away. She wouldn't be able to break them anyways. And besides, they looked best here, naturally.

      Melanie wandered around the cave. She definitely found the crystals beautiful. They'd be perfect as a fashion item, honestly. She brushed a finger against hem before tanning her paw back. How brutally cold! She sighed. It was nice and cold- what a break from the lavalands. She finally got bored of observing the crystals, and sat down next to a clear pool, soaking her tired feet. She overheard Maua talking about the crystals fetching a "pretty penny" and rolled her eyes. Although, she supposed, she had thought of using them as a fashion item, so she was just as bad. They truly were beautiful.

      Sierra wandered around the room, occasionally poking a crystal that sparked her interest. She paused, seeing a hat overhead. She made a squeaking noise, and it opened its eyes, fluttering down and hanging of her arm. Melanie chuckled. "Now you have batwings!" Sierra frowned, "What does that mean?" Melanie simply shrugged. Sierra growled, tumbling into the four armed kalon and tickling her. "Tell me!" She squealed. Melanie panted, laughing, "Fine! Fine." She sat up, "It means when you have bags of fat or something hanging from your arms." Sierra wrinkled her nose. "Whatever. Let's keep going. The air in herds kinda stale." Maua nodded in agreement, and Melanie shrugged, getting up. They continued their journey.

donn, abel, anthony;;

"Well it's a lot less hot."

Anthony noted with awe as obsidian stone gradually became smooth gravel on their path, and as they traversed, the gentle lap of waves on a shore could be heard in the distance. In intricate network of coves and caves, Donn noted, with crystals spouting out from the ground every now-and then. They were colorful, and seemed to gently glow in the moonlight. Abel remained stoic as far as commentary, seemingly even less at ease now.

Anthony found the occasional drip drop of water in the cave soothing, and the ground beneath their feet was somewhat softer due to the presence of the various streams. They'd been somewhere similar before, at the start of their journey; the cave which they'd entered to find the earth crystal was very similar. The streams of before them was a iridescent teal, and sparkled with all manner of gemstones and crystals growing beneath them.

It was all almost ethereal, something was unearthly about where they were now. The air was crisp and calming without tension.

But although all seemed calm now, something,, was off. They'd find out yet.

Propmt 13
Erebus
The change from the intense heat was highly welcome to Erebus and the farther into the cave he went the more beautiful everything became. Crystals hung from the ceiling, reflecting light across the walls in glows of color. He was amazed that such a place existed all the way out here, that it hadn't been destroyed or ransacked for the crystals. Suddenly that thought struck him, was it possible that this place of beauty was only trap for travelers? Leading them to their doom with a false sense of security.. Erebus didn't want to find out. Scanning the walls of rock with dread he tried to find a crystal that stood out from the others he knew it wouldn't be easy. They didn't need to stay here any longer than needed.
It could just be his anxiety taking control but one could never be too careful when your life was at stake.

This place was much less hot than the firelands, that was the first thing Corneria and Castor noted. The second factor was only noted by Castor, and that was the flux of ambient magic in the air. Unlike the firelands, leylines and mana rivers here practically saturated the area. For a warlock of a different type of mage, this would be a boon, but a wizard like Castor needed his spells prepared beforehand. Though, he didn't need to prepare his ink. The natural mana in the air infused it without any problems.

For sure, he could prepare more spells than usual with it.

Corneria was more than happy to touch all the crystals they encountered, and at one point tried to dislodge a particularly brilliant one. her Raffi-gifted sword and shield were more than enough to crack the rock surrounding the crystal, and now she was happy to place a rather shiny crystal into her bag of holding. The ten-pound rock was no match for the magical mini-universe it now resided in.

This place seemed to be perfect to relax in...

"Youch!", yowled Apollyon as one of his wings scraped the sharp edge of one of the many crystals sticking from the wall.
"Man up, sugar cube.", hissed Rossa, already a ways ahead of him and Roxanne. Exploring this new world was a lovely change to the rest of the mission. Being that is was an underground cavern type area, Roxanne and Rossa could easily feel at home by the dirt dripping on them every other minute, or the crystals poking from the walls. Granted it was still nothing like the kingdom, but really, how could any of this be like that. At least their kingdom wasn't cursed with any great evil, if you don't count the future ruler of course. Oh yes, all three of them could ramble on for hours on how Eva was no queen, but she had to be or else their would be no queen to rule. Lynn would most definitely love this cavern, she'd probably be knocking on walls or doors... wait? Was that a door or a rock? Doesn't matter right now.
They still needed a place to take shelter for the night so no time to greet the neighbors.
