“I-It’s stupid, really,” Tristan insists, ducking their head bashfully. “But… whenever I was upset, before… before it all went wrong… m-my friends used to take me to see local theatre. Wherever we were, we would find a performance, and we would go… even though I don’t think any of them liked theatre. Which, honestly… most of the performances were awful. Absolutely the most horrendously overacted things I’ve ever seen.” A sad smile tugs at the corners of his lips.
“A-And after that… we would go somewhere for food, and talk about the things we hated. One of us… th-the wizard, I think. Th-They would get up and do even worse impressions of the bad acting.” A light laugh rumbles through him at the fond memory, though his eyes remain doleful and distant. “One time, one of the actors came to the same tavern as us and overheard us! It was so embarrassing… but his reaction was so dramatic. He looked like he was going to spontaneously combust. After he stormed out, we laughed about that, too. N-None of it was malicious, w-we didn’t mean any harm… it was all in good fun.
“Even after all these years… I c-can’t remember their names. Th-Their faces fade from me too. But I remember the laughter we shared. I go to bad plays on purpose now, so I’ll never forget. And when it’s over, I think about what my friends would say, if they were still here… and I can’t help but laugh.”
