Bound by Rage by hugs wrote:
The wind howled over the cliffs of Aerispeak, where the guardian Zaizy crouched, her moody blue eyes gleaming with fury. She flexed her light-feathered wings, shaking off the remnants of battle. Below, the valley smoldered where the invaders had tried to claim her home.

Zaizy's rage was deep-rooted. She had fought alone for so long, protecting the cliffs from those who sought to drive her kind away. And yet, despite all her power, another had come—one who did not fear her wrath.

From the opposite peak, a streak of brown and gold dove toward her. Shale landed with a graceful thud. Her maroon eyes were just as fierce, and her feathery wings bristled.

"You fought them well," she said, her voice clipped with tension.

Zaizy narrowed her eyes. "I don’t need your approval."

Shale exhaled sharply, tail flicking. "Neither do I. But that doesn’t mean I’ll let them take what’s mine."

The invaders, a legion of skyjackals, had also attacked Shale’s home. Like Zaizy, she had battled them, her claws and wings striking down her foes. But the rage in her heart burned for a different reason—she had been cast out of her old clan, the Tundra, accused of weakness. Every fight was a chance to prove them wrong, to show that she was stronger than they had ever believed.

Zaizy saw her pain and recognized it as her own.

Before she could respond, the wind shifted. A shrill cry echoed across the cliffs—the skyjackals were returning, stronger and greater in number.

Zaizy and Shale exchanged a look. The time for rivalry was over. Without a word, they launched into the stormy sky together, their wings slicing through the air as they soared to meet the enemy.

They fought side by side, a tempest of talons and fury. Shale struck from above, diving with precision, while Zaizy weaved through their ranks, claws lashing with lethal grace. The skyjackals fell, scattered like leaves in the wind.

When the battle was over, both stood panting on the peak. The rage in their eyes had not disappeared—but it had changed.

"I still don’t need you," Zaizy muttered, catching her breath.

Shale smirked, folding her wings.
"Maybe not. But that doesn’t mean we can’t fight together."

Zaizy snorted but did not argue. As the sun dipped behind the cliffs, the two winged cats, fierce and untamed, stood side by side, watching over the valley they had reclaimed.

Their rage had not broken them. It had bound them together.

Shale ruffled her wings, glancing at Zaizy.
"I’ll be moving on soon. There are still battles to fight."

Zaizy tilted her head, considering her for a moment. Then, with a rare smirk, she flicked her tail. "You can always call on me when you're in the area."

A blur of orange, and Shale was alone.

Zepher smiled, wrapping her thick tail that uncannily resembled that of a snow leopard, except matching her pale cream fur, around her paws, as she pressed her fur against her friend, Sea Spray, whose foam-coloured fur ruffled in the breeze, before covering him with her white-cream wing to shield them both from the harsh wind that was blowing through the valley.

“Remember the first time we met?” Zepher asked, her eyebrows waggling mischievously.
“Oh, yes,” Sea Spray purred, his tail flicking at the tip in amusement. “You had tumbled over a hill and couldn’t resist exploring the river!”

Zepher attempted to cuff him around the ear, but he dodged and flicked his tail in fake contempt, “Come at me, if you’re so brave. But I was right, wasn’t I?” she dropped to a crouch as they circled each other, before tumbling in a mock battle, and eventually resigning and sitting carefully back.

“I remember chasing you, and getting you splashed with water, quite thoroughly.” Zepher reminded him. Sea Spray grinned, “Except I didn’t mind- running is more fun anyways. Plus, we got to play tag!” He paused to flap his wings and fly above her to avoid her second attempt at cuffing his ear, “And, I met you.”
“Aw, you big sap!” Zepher grinned good-naturedly, “But yeah, I honestly didn’t realize how fun tag was until I played with such a slow-poke!” she teased him, though they both knew Sea Spray was far faster than her.
“That’s what you think!” He tackled her again, and this time she resigned before jumping up and flying to the river where they first met.

They just watched the steady tumble of the water as they reminisced the joyous memory. “Do you remember when we… stopped being friends?” Zepher whispered. Sea Spray stayed silent, before nodding- a small one, barely noticeable, but he was her best friend, and it was as obvious as the glaring sun to her.
“I’m glad we’re friends again,” she said softly, letting her pale, piercing blue eyes meet his sand-yellow gaze, knowing that he agreed fully, without hearing his next words, “Yeah, me too.”

They slowly padded closer to the river, eventually becoming still, but no longer trembling in the wind, thanks to the shelter the surrounding hills offered.

Cold water splashed Zepher’s face, breaking her trance, and her vision cleared to see a mischievous Sea Spray looking back at her.
“Oh, it is so on!” She cried happily, tail flicking from side to side as she adjusted her wings to shield her, and used her paws and tail to throw water at him, except he was prepared and dodged it, before tapping her hind paw with his tail and rushing off, yelling, “TAG! YOU’RE IT!!!”

She raced after him, both of them tilting their wings to catch the sun, and let it soak into their wet fur, while grazing the tumbling water of the river with the other, letting out cries of joy, “I’ll catch you this time!” Zepher promised, hoping it wouldn’t be an empty one.
“Bet ya can’t!” Sea Spray challenged, pausing to turn around to face her, and dodging underneath again to avoid her, racing in the opposite direction.

Zepher huffed a breath before darting down, and admitting defeat, “Fine, fine. You won.” she yelled resignedly. He smiled brightly before showing off his amazing skills and reaching her in a few heartbeats. “Come on, admit it, I’m the champion, huh? Say it!” she glanced at her mischievous friend, before mumbling, “You’re the champion… THIS TIME!” and racing upwards to reach the hill they were previously sitting on, as he protested and called, “Hey, no fair!” but chased after her nonetheless, his sandy gaze bright as ever at the challenge, “I bet I can still win, though!”

The stars had started to shine, and two cats made their way to a large tree in the middle of the valley to rest from the long day. The sound of the night birds and a cricket could be heard in the distance. One with horns on their head lay down looking up at the stars, the other one with feathers near their tail tries to start a fire.

The one with horns on their head looking up at the stars and asked. “Mint in this short time together, what has been your favorite memory from are travels? We have seen a lot and even we met was for sure an experience. I was just working on the fields when out in the distance there was a cat staring right back at me who looked lost. You for sure have changed a bit since we first met.”

Mint takes a break from getting the fire going and looks over. “Well Althea, I’m not sure? We have not traveled long but we saw many things. Even when I had met you for the first time, that will be something I will never forget about. I was unsure before then on where I was going or what I was going to do. I was even too scared to approach you when you were working in the fields. It did not help that before I had left that day, I made sure my pelt was clean, and I was walking up to a farmland. But that day has taught me I will come across different lands and I need to be prepared for them all. You just joining me in this short time means a lot to me. I must ask though what has been yours?” Mint looks back down trying to get the fire back going.

Althea looks over at Mint closing their eyes thinking before speaking. “For me it might have been the other day. Just being able to run though the grass without a care in the world. The fields are wide open to just run through them with the blades of grass and the breeze through your fur and feathers is amazing. The peace and the calm bring my heart to ease. It lets me know that even in unknowing times there is peace.” They smile as Mint just got the fire going.

Mint starts giggling “You know another memory could just be getting this fire going. Who would've known it was hard to start a flame. Running around in the valley was for sure fun. All the different plants and the way of the valley feels so large but somehow looks so small. There was also that time we went to the river that was fun! Seeing all the fish and the different colorful pebbles in the water. That area also around the river was beautiful. It was amazing seeing something different for sure.”

Althea also giggled a little bit. “It is nice getting the fire going on a cold night. The river was nice, it was calm listening to the ripples of the water flow off the rocks. But for sure that area was beautiful. It was nice how one area was covered in the shade of trees while the other was open in the sun. But this night was great fun, but I am off to sleep. It has been a long day.” Althea lay their head down drifting off to sleep.

Mint looked up at the stars. “Goodnight, it has been a long day. And thank you for traveling with me even if it is for this short time.” Mint looks over at the fire that is now about to give out. They put the fire out before going to sleep.

After a long day the two cats were now asleep with the moon now held high in the sky. The two sleep through the night not knowing what adventures and stories the next day will bring.

As Solani patrolled her territories near her clan's border, she felt herself being watched and thought she picked up a sound behind her with her sharp, radar-like ears. But before she could turn to see what it was, she felt two paws on her eyes.

"Guess who!!!"

Solani finally breathed a sigh of relief when she recognized the voice and removed her former friend's paws from her eyes, protesting. "What are you doing, crazy cat? You almost gave me a heart attack! I could have attacked you!" When she turned to look at her, she realized how much Catalina had grown in all this time, almost as much as she had. "What are you doing here anyway?"

"I found something that brought back some good memories, and I thought you'd want to see it." Catalina smiled and showed her a small, shiny, yellowish-green gem.

Solani's eyes widened. She remembered that shiny little rock, she remembered that day. It had been a great day for both of them, one of the last times they saw each other.

"I remember... Oh, I do, what a day... You tried to climb those rocks with your claws and they all fell off, you almost gave me a heart attack... you almost always give me a heart attack. You have to be more careful, really."

"I'm still alive, aren't I? And that time it worked out well too. I managed to take flight in time and we discovered the entrance to that unexplored cave. A great adventure."

Image

"You kept trying to climb everything and it wasn’t fun. I thought you'd fall again. You were so irresponsible," Solani scolded her, then sighed and smiled. “But yeah, I guess we did have a great time. There were tons of tunnels and passageways behind the rocks to explore, and when we found that green gem, then a yellow one, an orange one, and followed them into that large chamber filled with precious stones from floor to ceiling… Wow, I just remember getting lost in their shine for a moment…” She spoke as if fascinated by the memory, then looked at Catalina with a frown, “…and then being knocked down and looking up to see you climbing the walls again, so you could see each gem up close.”

Image

“They deserved a closer look; they were so beautiful and of so many different kinds… Citrines, topazes, olivines, rubies and zoicites all around them, fluorites of every color…!!! It was a complete catalog, and had never been seen before!” Catalina defended herself, using her little paw to adjust her glasses, which occasionally slipped down the bridge of her nose.

“And you had to take a piece?”

Catalina paled, her ears lowered for a moment; she knew the that argument was coming.

“Obviously!!! I wasn't planning on taking them all, just one. And don't even think about blaming me for the earthquake and the entrance collapsing just as we managed to escape. Picking up a single peridotite the size of my beans doesn't cause an entire mountain to shake, especially when it almost effortlessly fell into my paw.”

“No, yeah… I know, I know… I'm aware of that…” Solani rubbed the bridge of her nose with her paw, trying to calm herself; she didn't want to argue with her old friend, whom she hadn't seen in so long. “But I'm still upset, it's a shame. I loved that cave…” She sighed sadly. “You know I haven't been able to find it again in all this time.”

“Really? Well, you know what? I think we should meet up sometime, like when we were kids, and try to find it. What do you think?”
