Prompt: Enid, when she was alive, lived at a cemetery with her owner at the top of a hill. Her owner was the guard of the cemetery at nights, and in the mornings, he stayed home. Enid always helped him, though, at nights, patrolling the grounds, scaring off grave robbers or anything or anyone that looked suspicious. She did great work and lived a long life. When she died, her owner buried her right there by the house. He grieved for months but still kept up his job, knowing that was what Enid would want.
Enid, though, didn’t go on to heaven like her owner thought; she stayed a ghost. Most people thought when dogs passed, they would play with their other doggy friends in the afterlife, right? Well, Enid much preferred humans, and so she continued to patrol the grounds, making sure everything was in check.
Though, one night on patrol, she heard crying. She ran over to a small and muddy grave, where a small ghost child sat sobbing. Enid walked up, woofing, and licked the girl’s face. The girl giggled and looked up, sniffling as she petted Enid. The girl just talked to her, explaining she was lonely in the cemetery and her family was mostly all still alive as she was so young, around four years of age. Enid just sat and listened.
The next night, Enid went over to the girl, grabbing her hand and bringing her along on her patrol. The girl seemed to understand, following her. They became great friends, playing and patrolling together every night. After a few years, more kids joined them—little girls, little boys, even a few babies that were carried by the slightly older kids. Enid took protecting them with great pride, licking their tears when they were sad, snuggling them when it was a particularly cold night, and making sure they never got lonely. And of course, she always brought them on patrol.
Her owner still did his job, but she could tell he could feel her presence some nights as he would smile and look down at her, saying, “Still keeping the grounds safe, old girl?” She would bark every time, even though he couldn't hear it; he would just smile and nod, moving on.
Enid never thought that she would be a mom, albeit to ghost children, but it was greater than anything she could have hoped for.
