Fun Fact: Names are considered highly important in the area my clan lives - due in equal parts to pride and the presence of fae - and LakeClan itself has a bunch of naming systems within it due to it being a group of all sorts of cats. Generally, the naming system of the land works like this:
- Kittypets can have any typical pet names. This ranges from food names, nature names, Twoleg names, and silly names most often. However, the kittypet may not always call themselves by the name their Twoleg gave them.
Ex. Rye, Willow, Lev, and Duchess - Rogues and loners that don't have a strong connection to the Old Clan will have names in the native language, sometimes with names from other cultures but not often. Some have nature-based names, but it's not as common.
Ex. Nitya, Smoke, Vukava, Marie - Rogues and loners with strong connections to the Old Clan will more often have nature-based names, but some will have typical rogue names instead. Some of these groups that use typical rogue names will name their kits nature-based names, then have a renaming ceremony once they reach adulthood. This is very distinctly not a warrior name, but the name itself does usually have a meaning that relates to the cat in some way.
Ex. Briar, Frost, Oak -> Yantar, Dusk -> Idalia
All rogues and loners have surnames as well (and by default, most LakeClan cats). These are passed down matrilineally. Familes which have nature-based names often have compound surnames (ex. Flurry Runeheart) while groups that use the other naming system typically surnames doing the same (ex. Idalia Oborin). However, this isn't always the case (ex. Vorona Ironfrost).
When it comes time for it, Damir (the leader of my clan), will deny StarClan in changing his and his clanmates' names. Instead, he speaks with each cat individually about the warrior name they would like, how it suits them, etc. and even denies the -star suffix for himself. When he and his clan all have the classic clan names, they're considered more a second name used for formal events or strangers. (This is done partially to give cats a harmless name to any fae they may encounter).
Moons later, unrest splits the clan. When the two groups finally come together in the forest's first Gathering, the former clanmates call each other by their formal names.
