"—sardonyx! watch where you're going, would you!"

a muffled huff echoes down the lantern-lit tunnel, promptly followed by the scraping of metal on stone. "kinda difficult when you're dragging a massive bucket backwards down the hall, nimwit!" the bucket clanks into the wall just short of a millionth time, liquid inside sloshing alarmingly close to the edges. tiny flecks of blue splatter onto stone incriminatingly. "why don't you give it a go, hm?"

the light wavers as an exasperated foxglove tosses his head, lantern swinging wildly. "you literally volunteered yourself for this job."

"so!? i'm unvolunteering myself right now. good luck!" sardonyx banters back, and although fox knows there's no real bite to his bark, he can't help but play along. "you little—! get over here before i dump this on you instead!" his little brother yelps as he reaches threateningly towards the bucket.

"i'm going, i'm going!"

and though it takes them ridiculously longer than it should have, the brothers do eventually make it to their destination. the ledge they wind up on looks down on the festival setup below. a slow, yet steady stream of cats pass by, all carrying a variety of decorations and other various... important things.

now all they had to do was wait. and wait... and wait.

"are you sure maple won't miss her face paint?" sardonyx questions eventually, without turning from his vantage point. foxglove chuckles. "nah, she didn't even notice. she has so many buckets of blue dye that she won't be missing this one. plus, we can always help her make more after. it's worth it."

"you best believe you'll be making more! she'll have us mixing dye until the day we die for this one, fox."

he lets out a strangled snort, "she'll get over it."

they lapse back into a comfortable silence as they watch for their cue.

and, after what seems like forever, sardonyx finally leaps up. "there!" he whisper-shouts, turning to his brother with the widest of grins.

fox locks onto their targets. viperstrike and hoarfrost meander closer to where the brothers lie in wait, checking in on the progress below and carrying with them supplies for their own tasks. they were the perfect targets, really. their inevitable outrage and retaliation made it all the more worth the effort.

"aaand three, two, one... go!" with a grunt and a shove from fox, the bucket tips over the edge; it goes tumbling down, its contents surging out full-force in a tsunami wave of blue dye. the bucket itself clangs as it goes crashing into the stone floor. it rolls away guiltily, as if taking accountability for the incident at hand. the dye, however, has a mind of its own.

all the girls below can do is gasp as they're utterly drenched in paint. they freeze, dropping their mouthfuls of supplies in bewilderment. they attempt to shake the paint from themselves—to little avail—before they look up for the source of the situation.

covering his mouth with a paw innocently, fox muffles his snickering. "oops!"

and then it clicks. their faces morph into twin glares as they lock onto the culprits above. "FOXGLOVE. SARDONYX." hoarfrost squawks in rage, viper still rendered speechless.

"ladies, ladies," fox taunts. "settle down, would you? you're making a scene."

finally knocked out of her stupor, viper's face reddens beneath the sea of blue she's been submerged in. "SETTLE DOWN?!" she shrieks, "I'LL SETTLE DOWN WHEN YOU'RE SIX FEET UNDER, YOU LITTLE—!"

fox whips around, howling with laughter. "run!"

ondine is known for the fresh sea breeze that wafts up from the seashore, and often, cats hang their laundry on the piers by the sea to dry. the kingdom is relatively safe, so the cats feel comfortable enough to do this until their socks go missing mysteriously.

more and more cats began to complain that they were missing only half of their pairs of socks, some blamed the work of trolls, goblins, or perhaps even the fairies that drift down the mountainside and out of the forests... but the real culprit was cael (although none of the cats properly know this). Cael enjoys running the rumor mill, and although stealing socks is relatively harmless, he likes to set things up to make cats believe there are more mystical events than meets the eye. he's a practical jokester, who wants to make the populace believe that trolls live amongst them (of course, he doesn't believe trolls are real... boy, is he in for a surprise).
