Prompt: Soft mist gathered on velvety leaves, the light of the morning sun dancing as it settled on the dew. Twitching her nose, Doehaven hummed gently through the winding, sandy forest, the early morning melody of native birds bouncing off trees and reaching her ears gently. She grinned as she spotted a familiar glimmer in the trees, a breaking away from the forest that introduced the bright sun to the territory. Flicking her tail, she lifted a paw to continue on her stroll when a voice interrupted her, "Hey, wait up!" A slightly clumsy crashing echoed behind her and she turned to be nose-to-nose with its source. "Hi,
Peachcrown." Peachcrown panted slightly, reaching the forest's exit and the cat she was looking for. Doehaven cocked an eyebrow as the brief silence stretched, Peachcrown resting her gaze on the other she-cat for quite some time.
Doehaven and Peachcrown hadn't been friends for long but they didn't take long to grow attached. When Doehaven, Doepaw at the time, had joined from a nearby rogue group and knew only the Leader of OceanClan, Peachcrown was the first to greet her which had surprised many of her clanmates knowing Peachcrown tended to be an easily overstimulated and isolated young cat. They eventually began training together and once reaching warrior-hood, going on missions together, becoming an incredibly efficient team. It all changed when Doehaven began to hang out more and more with
Acornnick out of all cats... Peachcrown grew distant and was overwhelmed with guilt at her feelings. Doehaven had been her best friend, how could this tom come along and ruin it? Only recently had Peachcrown been reaching out to reconnect with her old friend, over four moons since she had distanced herself from her... friend.
"Well? I don't suppose you chased after me for no reason?" The words came out meaner than she had intended, the two shifting on their paws uneasily as they avoided each other's gaze. Doehaven was still upset with her- her only friend left her when she had needed her most. When the silence grew to be too much, Doe sighed and swept her tail protectively over her swollen flank. Peachcrown finally spoke, breaking the quiet, "I... wanted to go for a walk with you. Goldenleaf asked me to get some marigold for her storage." Doehaven cracked a small smile, remembering how Goldenleaf had always made Peachcrown run errands for her, leaving her to smell of leaves, forest, and flowers. Doehaven loved that about her.
Doehaven nodded slowly, turning before any more thoughts could overwhelm her further. "Very well." Taller bits of grass whistled in the prairie wind, the sun warming their backs as they trekked on, shoulders painfully apart unlike how they usually were brushing against each other with a fond gentleness. Peachcrown, from the corner of Doehaven's eyes, opened her mouth only to close it, tongue-tied in the morning sun. They picked their way through the warming valley, Doehaven desperately wanting to sit growing exhausted from the walking. Before Peachcrown could stop the words spewing from her mouth, she spoke. "What happened to you and Acornnick?" Doe stopped in her tracks and flexed her claws, kneading claw marks into the soft soil below her paws. The wind rustled the pink flowers dotting her fur, "Nothing, why does it matter anyways?" She muttered bitterly, recalling what happened to her in the last few moons alongside that tom.
Peachcrown sat on the ground and inhaled, "Sit with me. Please. We need to talk." Doehaven didn't argue- it was true, they did need to. Doehaven sat beside her, allowing for herself to melt her colorfully ticked fur into Peachcrown's silky pale tabby stripes, her fluffy cheeks leaning against Peachcrown's shoulder. Peachcrown felt her heart race but she calmed it with silence and deep breaths. "I'm so... I'm so stupid. I'm so sorry for avoiding you!" Peachcrown whispered, resting her chin on her friend's gray ticked head, "I care very deeply for you." Doehaven felt her heart crashing around within her ribcage, unsure why she was feeling such a way as salty tears began to sting her eyes. "I'm sorry too. I left you for Acornnick because I thought I loved him. It turns out I didn't." This was news to Peachcrown who, in her confusion, perked her ears but remained silent, allowing her to continue. "I... I thought I loved him so we agreed to become mates and start a family of our own but I couldn't have been more wrong." Peachcrown lifted her head and brushed her striped tail around her friend, confused when she felt a large bump where only fluff should've been along Doehaven's flank.
Peachcrown sighed with no ill intent, "Oh Doe..." Her whisper was filled with pity and guilt. How could she have left Doehaven to deal with the huge changes alone? "Did the both of you separate?" Doehaven nodded through Peachcrown's fluffy chest, "Yes, we did. I knew we had to but I'm going to be forced to raise these kits alone- no mate in sight. I did the wrong thing and I listened to my head instead of..." Peachcrown flicked her ears curiously, "...your heart?" Doe lifted her head, her cheeks smoothed with trails of silent tears she had so clearly been holding in until now. "I forgive you, you didn't know and I stopped hanging out with you so suddenly- how could you know?" Peachcrown felt her heart race once more, unfamiliar to the golden cat. "Are we okay?" Doehaven asked once she noticed the conflicted expression plastered across Peachcrown's face. Peachcrown shook her head slightly to clear it before smiling and lovingly nuzzling her companion. "Absolutely, always."
Doehaven took a small moment to revel in Peachcrown's light, golden, bright, and beautiful- as she had always been, even in the darkest days, even when no one had known. "Here, I have something for you." Reaching behind herself, she pulled a small pink blossom from behind her tail and cupped it carefully in her paw. "I just found this one. I want you to have it- as a promise." Peachcrown marveled at the little flower that meant so much to Doehaven, no one would ever find any like the ones she had on at all times. "T-thank you, Doe. It's beautiful." With gentle prodding and twisting, Peachcrown watched, her eyes narrowing fondly as Doe wove the flower stem into the fur at the base of her tail, where it had rested only a few moments previously on Doehaven.
"It's a promise that I will never leave you again, no matter what." Her purr was louder than the birds hovering above the two cats, twittering and singing the songs of a blooming love, one unseen by both she-cats until now.
