Explanation: The scent of pond algae always makes Hawlfeather remember his dad showing him how to pounce frogs. "Stay out of the mud," his father warned, "or they'll hear your paws all the way 'cross the pond." So, side by side they stalked along the grassy bank of a slimy green pond until the biggest bullfrog either of them had ever seen leaped onto the bank not 10 yards away. They both slunk down instinctively, and Hawkfeather took a bold step-
"Son!" His dad yelled in a whisper, but too late. His clumsy paw squelched in the slimy mud and the frog leaped away with a hefty splash back into the pond.
"Now-" His father started, sputtering in an attempt to master his frustration in front of his son. He bit his tongue and made to kick at the mud, but slipped instead and went with comical flailing into the murky emerald water. Rising slowly out of the muck like a frog himself, his father let loose: "STARS ABOVE, HAWKIE! Watch whatcher DOIN'!" Hawkfeather had watched the scene with a straight face that cracked with nervous chuckles until he shattered into uproarious laughter, to which his father eventually softened and joined.
Now that he's grown, Hawkfeather thinks fondly on that event, the way his father apologized afterward, and the way he smiled good-naturedly every time he retold the story to anyone who would listen.
