She and Cinnamonstick have been friends since kithood. Waterlily started showing signs of her unusual elemental talent from a young age, which quickly made her "the weird kit" among her other young peers. No one wanted to be friends with the kitten who sneezed and accidentally materialized a bucketful of water over your head (which then proceeded to fall and soak you because gravity exists). Waterlily certainly had trouble fitting in with the other kits, but never with Cinnamonstick. As an only kit who spent much of her time ill and stuck in bed, Cinnamonstick was happy for any company her age she could get - and didn't care about Waterlily's talent like the other kits did anyway. The two spent their time playing games they'd made up together, listening to stories from the adults, and planning what they'd do when they finally became apprentices together.

As they aged into their apprenticeships, the two slowly drifted apart. Cinnamonstick was held back from being apprenticed for an extra moon due to her illness, giving the two less time to spend together, and leaving their kithood daydreams of a shared apprenticeship behind. And, for Waterlily, suddenly her powers became a cool trait to admire, as she gained more control and could show off during training sessions. They grew back together again as Waterlily began to realize that the other apprentices may have admired her powers now, but they still saw her as strange and an outsider. Cinnamonstick had cared about her from the start, though, regardless of her abilities, and that was an honest friendship which Waterlily wanted to build. It took some time for Cinnamonstick to grow to trust her again after having been left behind and alone, but eventually she forgave her and the two grew closer than before. Waterlily even requested that her own warrior ceremony be held back a moon so she could be promoted alongside Cinnamonstick.

From the moment he was allowed outside the camp, Pisces has always gravitated towards water. He nearly frightened his mom to death when he snuck out one day and they found him playing in the edge of the river that ran through the territory. Not in the calm slow section but the strip with treacherous rapids. But Pisces wasn't afraid. He felt exhilarated yet safe by the spray of rushing water. He knew the river had different sides and emotions, just like cats. He started a habit of talking to the river. He knew the other cats thought he was losing it, and maybe he was, but he could've sworn he felt something in his head and heart in return. And then there were the oddities. When he talked with excitement about his first kill, he thought he could see playful shapes in the water. illustrating as he told his stories. Another day he ranted to the river about how another apprentice had played a prank him and the next time that apprentice tried to cross the river via rocks to stay dry, a freak wave crashed over her, completely soaking her. And shortly after he became a warrior and there was that terrible fire that chased away all the game, he cried to the river, overcome by hunger and fear for his clanmates slowly wasting away. A few minutes later a couple of fish swam close enough to the bank for him to swiftly catch. The river's gift allowed his clan to last another day. After that, the other cats backed off on his strange habits and began to realize maybe Pisces truly did had a friend in the river.
