โœฆWhat are Wind Reapers? - - - - - - - - - -
Wind Reapers are a species of dragon that inhabit high ground, most
commonly seen on mountain peaks. Their long, thin body allows them to
maneuver steep slopes and jagged cliffs with ease. With their strong back
legs, they can easily climb trees and make amazing leaps. Although they
are unable to fly, their light body weight allows them to glide, with help
from their high jumps and long tails. Their tails are very flexible, helping
    them climb and glide.
Despite their appearance, most Reapers are relatively timid and shy. They
are loners, however occasionally enjoy a friends company. They mate for
life due to their lack of trust for others, and can live for up to 30 years.

LORE EVENT: PAINTED SKULLS
A Lore Event Adopt posed the question: Why do Wind Reapers paint their skulls? and we got an answer! The Community gathered around and submitted their applications along with the answer to this question, and not it is official, thanks to SpiritStar3 and Navycloud.

Why do Wind Reapers paint their Skulls? 08/2023

Wind Reapers hold a deep respect for their elders and loved ones. Though they are usually solitary creatures, there is no stronger bond than that of a Wind Reaper to their family. To show this respect, Wind Reapers are known to paint their skulls in the colors of their family. Most of the time, Wind Reapers paint their skulls to show respect to their elders, but they also do this in remembrance of others who have passed.

It is not uncommon to see a Wind Reaper with paint on their skulls during a passing ceremony, or even to celebrate the life of a new nest. Whatever the case may be, when a Wind Reaper's skull is painted it has something to do with their family, and should be seen as sacred.

[s] Skull Paint
Lore:
Wind Reapers paint their skulls as a show of respect to elders. Its usually their own family members, so parents and grandparents. They let their elders paint on some stuff onto the skull as well, as bonding. They tend to use favorite colors of the elder or elders, as extra respect showing.

Navycloud has painted his with navy blue as its the favorite color of his mom and grandma. His dad and sister passed...so he did it for them as well. His whole family favors blues, especially this one. Since its his favorite as well, he is proud to have this shade upon his skull.

prompt ::

this ritual is performed every new moon. it is said that the coming of a new moon brings forth a new era and new life and protection. wind reapers paint their skulls so they can let the โ€œessence of the moonโ€ flow through their bodies for protection. in ancient times, when wind reapers were found everywhere, they used to gather in circles and paint their skulls together. skull paint colour can vary, though the most common is dark blue, as it is the lucky colour and associated with the moon.

nowadays though, this ancient practise is forgotten. as wind reapers were driven to near extinction by humans, hunted for their skulls. wind reaper culture was forgotten. present day wind reapers only think about survival. rituals and moon cycles mean nothing to them.

caesus is one of the only reapers that actually remember this practise. they remember their mother teaching them before she left. so he painted his skull. one of the rare ones who remember the ancient days, he was only a child when performing the rituals. he continues to keep the ritual alive, as he believes that it will protect him from the humans.

โ€œmom? why are you painting your skull? why is everyone painting their skulls?โ€

โ€œoh, caesus, itโ€™s for the new moon ritual.โ€

โ€œwhatโ€™s that?โ€ caesus asked, tilting his head in confusion.

โ€œitโ€™s when we paint our skulls for good luck. the new moon will bless us with its essence, and itโ€™ll protect us for the whole month until the next new moon, when we have to renew our promises. do you want to get your skull painted too?โ€

caesus hesitated for several heartbeats, then whispered, โ€œoh..okay.โ€

โ€œit wonโ€™t hurt, donโ€™t worry. Iโ€™ll paint your skull in your favourite colour! a special blue paint, just for you!โ€
โ€œyay!โ€ caesus cheered, letting his mother use her claw to paint the sacred markings on his skull.

he saw the other reapers gathering in a circle, all of them gazing up at the moonless night sky. โ€œIโ€™m going to participate in the circle now, stay here and watch. also, be quiet, okay?โ€

caesus nodded. he watched the reapers chant something he didnโ€™t understand. eventually, he got bored and fell asleep.

caesus slowly regained his bearings and sat up. โ€œโ€ฆit wasnโ€™t real. it was just another one of those memories.โ€ he sighed and lay back down in his bed of moss sadly.

History and Traditions
How we forgot who we are

[...]

The art of skull painting is generally considered a way to show off, to stand out in the crowd. However, this ancient tradition has a very different origin.

Our ancestors used to paint their skull for a completely different reason than in our modern times. They originally painted their skulls in order to blend in with the surroundings. As we evolved, however, we began to display different colors on our bodies, sometimes very bright, and painting our skulls, rather than an opportunity to go unnoticed became a source of pride for many of us.

However, there are still Reapers who stick to the ancient tradition: their colors are more natural, and if they have painted their skulls, spotting them in their natural environment will be more difficult than you imagine.

[...]

Bartolomeu painted his skull after reading in a book about the elusive Reapers that live unnoticed on mountains sides. He wanted to try it out, and even if the result isn't excellent and everyone still sees him, having his skull painted makes him feel closer to his traditions. And yes, he added a bit of color in it. Natural grey paint is boring, isn't it?

ADOPTED

I absolutely adored this adopt because I love the ideas you guys came up with! Reading through your lore entries made me feel like I was reading pages from a historical book, and I think your guys did a wonderful job! In fact, I'm actually giving out an RU for this one!

My Honorable Mention goes to cremxii, because I loved the little story that you had about his mother, and it made me feel like this is how it would survive. The only reason I didn't pick yours, was because as I was reading these entries, I realized I wanted something more modern and not based on ancient rituals. However, your entry has inspired the new Jack Event, which will be mentioned in the Roleplay Guide when I finish the post about this special roleplay/adoption event.

The RU goes to ylesia, because I loved the idea that this skull painting was originally a form of camo for Wind Reapers of old and it makes sense why they would want to paint their skulls when they are trying to hide from humanity. The only reason I didn't pick yours was because I don't see Wind Reapers as a "show off" kind of species. That could change as people start their own roleplays, but at this time I didn't think it melded too well. You will get a Wind Reaper in the same colors as this one with the same trait. Keep an eye out for it!

Finally, the winner for this adopt is SpiritStar3, who I think had a wonderful idea as to why they paint their skulls. Navycloud shows not just respect for his elders, but also remembrance for the family that passed away when he painted his skull, and I believe that's a great reason for Wind Reapers to paint them. It shows other wind reapers that their family is important, and leaves enough of the door open to use skull painting to show celebration as well for things like hatchlings being born. Congratulations on winning this adopt! The lore entry for this event has been updated in our roleplay guide.
