Ten moons ago. They were almost a warrior, yet still had less than one moon to go; 12 moons old, with a fire burning in her soul brighter than a forest alight. Growing up in what was left of a once glorious settlement was never easy. What made it harder still were the threats around every turn; hawks, eagles, snakes everywhere. A true headache for a cat of her nature.

A small hiss had sounded nearby as she was walking with an new apprentice. His mentor was currently unable to go out, and requested she give him the territory tour, which she was happy to do. They hadn’t thought anything of the hiss until he stopped, jaw hanging open in horror. She turned with a twitch of her ear, their frown turning into a look of shock.

A water moccasin. The bane of cats, a bite so poisonous it could fell a twoleg,

and the bane of Hissing Adder’s existence.

They jumped to the defense; as soon as the snake went to strike, she ripped it out of the air and wrestled with it on the ground. Out of the corner of their eye, they saw its small, needle-like fangs sparkle in the sunlight as it readied to bite. She reached a paw, and, with a heavy hit, sunk the creature’s fangs into the marshy ground. As soon as they let go, it slithered off into the cattails to recover. She hadn’t thought anything of the action until the apprentice’s murmur came from behind them, just barely too muffled to hear. She turned around.

“Repeat that, please?”

“Hero… you’re a hero!”

And from that day, from that moment, they held a title within the settlement in its final moons. One that was never shaken by time.

Crows are circling above a graveyard, lured in by some foul prize. Every so often a lone call from one of the birds adds gloom to an already dreary scene. In the middle of the grounds, an arcane symbol rests on the ground like an angry wound. It is drawn in a glowing substance and strewn randomly with bits of bone, the source of which is unknown. At the centre of the symbol, a large cat. For the most part it could be any old corpse, but one thing in particular sets this one apart- it wears a crown.

Thoran stood before the symbol he had drawn. His blank eyes betrayed no sentiment, but his actions were born of admiration and duty. He had been charged with protecting his king, and yet here the king lay before his very eyes. Butchered on the throne by his own brother. Thoran had made the brother and the traitors pay with their lives, but it was not enough to stop the king from falling. The fact that Thoran even had to perform this ritual meant that he had failed. Even so, he had to do something. Something to try and bring back the king.

He said the strange words he'd memorized and thrusted his claws into the earth inside the symbol. The substance began to glow brighter, causing flickering shadows to dance on the bones and headstones of the graveyard. The substance then changed colour, from a acid-like green to blood red. The change started at the outside edges of the symbol and slowly made its way toward the centre where the body rested. Blood crackled and turned black, emitting an acrid stink.

Staring at the corpse in the circle, Thoran remembered his time with the cat king. The memories had not come through the veils of death and resurrection unscathed and the overarching emotions associated with these memories were unharmed. He wondered absently if the memories would continue to deteriorate, as they do in life. His oath, though… The promise he made to protect the king would never slip away. It was the source of the duty to which he rededicated himself daily. A memory swam into his mind. He was only a few months old. His father and the king stood before him, wearing almost the same set of armour he wore now, with the brightest and most proud smile. He was clearly pleased that Thoran would follow in his footsteps as a paladin of the king. Thoran said the words, swearing an oath to the king, but he wouldn't understand what it all really meant until years later.

2 years later, after intense training and preparation, Thoran is standing nervously near the back of the throne room. It is the annual Oath Of the Paladin, a ceremony in which the young toms in training are selected for duty and allowed to become full-fledged paladin. The toms are brought before the king to say the oath and be taken in for their years-long wardship. The shining, flawless armour he wears doesn't feel real. As he steps forward to accept his sword, he is in a daze. It was now his duty to serve and protect the king, as his father and his fathers father did.
