EVENT BACKGROUND wrote:A loud chirp rings out, silencing the chatter from gathered cats. You look up, eyes coming to rest on a calico cat waiting for the last of the noise to die down - Kardal, a clowderless cat acting as an impartial referee for the competition. Propped up on a small cart of lashed wood and weathered bent-wood wheels, he watches the gathering with bright eyes. At last, he steps forward slightly, wooden wheels gliding over the small cracks of the weathered pavement you've gathered on. He cracks a smile before speaking, voice loud and exuberant.

"New faces, welcome to the annual feather festival!" Cheers ring out, the locals excitedly welcoming those who have traveled to take place in this celebration. Kardal pauses as the cheering gradually halts before continuing, this time speaking with a tone of theatrics as he paces excitedly through his speech.

"A long time ago, a terrifying monsoon ripped through the jungle, flooding the city cats out of their homes and causing a massive landslide that tore the cliff apart. The cats banded together and gathered feathers + other nest materials from the local birds to make sure everyone was kept safe. Now, many years later, we honor the actions of the past with a competition–-in good fun!-–to gather feathers once again!"

"Visitors, you will pick a clowder to assist as teammates. Those of you who work with Cliffside will search for red feathers from the scarlet macaw, and those of you who work with Cityside will search for blue feathers from the hyacinth macaw. Mind the rules, of course: feathers must be collected from the ground, the birds are not to be injured for the sake of competition. Nests with eggs or chicks should be left alone, though empty ones are fair game. Above all, remember that this is a celebration of unity despite the competition - regardless of the prize, we should still be looking out for each other regardless of who we're working with." The crowd grows tense with excitement, waiting for the signal to start the search.

Kardal bends down carefully, picking up a large green feather. "When this hits the ground, you're off!" he announces.

It floats to the ground slowly, and you look around, eager to choose your team...

Return • Summer Anniversary Event • How To Play

Postby mothbrainz » Wed Jun 15, 2022 12:27 pm

Welcome to the Return Summer Event!

Here, you will answer prompts in either words or art to gather feathers for the clowder's competition! These feathers can be returned to Kardal in the Event Shop for special rewards, so be sure to gather as many as you can! If you're very lucky, there may be some special items lurking in the jungle, too...

To explore, you will answer a given prompt using words or art; you may also post just the form alone, although you may not find as many feathers that way as you otherwise would!

Return • Summer Anniversary Event • The Clowders

Postby mothbrainz » Wed Jun 15, 2022 12:38 pm

Event Clowders
To take part in the summer event, you will want to pick one of the two clowders to help in your prompts! You may reference that clowder's NPCs in your replies, as well as encounter them as you wander through the jungle.

CITYSIDE wrote:The cats on the Cityside of the clearing are eager to be off, joking amongst each other and already looking around for bright feathers. You spot several cats with sparse fur, and a few with distinctive curly fur in the mix. Several cats have collars made of bright woven fabric, a testament to the closeness of these cats to the city’s occasional human visitors. A few gesture towards you, welcoming you in to join in the fun! You get the definite sense that these cats know how to let the good times roll, although who only knows if they will settle down enough to be serious about winning the competition…

CLIFFSIDE wrote:On the Cliffside of the clearing, the cats are quieter but no less attentive, their ears pricked and their eyes bright as Kardal gives the instructions. Many of the cats here appear to have darker coats, which some have accented with brightly-colored flowers. From the subtle twitches of their tails and movement of their many-toed paws, you come to realize that these cats have an internal sign language all their own, almost certainly honed in the dense forest undergrowth. A small kitten watches you curiously, and you are certain you would be accepted into the group, you just might have a bit of catching up to do…

Prompt Response: ( from the perspective of Kaneli #A89 )

The forest is a welcome home to me, with its towering old growth trees and looming shade, however I feel like my body is melting through the gaps in my fur within moments of being here. It was quite a long trek to get here, sweat isn't an unfamiliar feeling as it tickles my skin and prompts a quick itch, but the humidity under the thick brush and dense foliage are new and uncomfortable. The wall of heat here is enough to make me choke a little, already a pressure builds in my lungs. How is it so hot...? Yet... it's also like the air is wet and dense, looming shadows press down on my tense shoulders and I duck below ferns that sprout tall and proud from the deep, rich earth. The scents around here are like nothing I've ever experienced, my whiskers twitch about while I open my mouth to drink them in- carefully. It's overwhelming trying to pick out distinct features of the taste of the air, everything is so rich, earthy, and alien to me.

I can pick out a few familiar notes of course, the damp bark of the tall, thick trees reminds me of home, for a moment I feel a little homesick. There's also some prey that's passed through the area recently that also live and grow in my homeland. Most of them are pleasant, vibrant green scents of foreign undergrowth and floral lilts of flowers that I've never seen before, though there are a few that give me pause. Suspicion, even.

Predators. Of course there must be some around here, I'm sure of it, keeping low on my haunches and my ears are constantly swiveling for any sound of life- there are so many. The distant shrieks and whistles of exotic birds, the chittering of other fauna. I can hear the grass and leaves shift with movement, possibly a breeze but it's so dense in here that I suspect instead that some sort of other animal is moving through. I am careful to avoid anything I don't recognize but... there's a lot of that. I recognize so little here.

After a while, the nerves get the better of me. I've practically jumped out of my fur several times in the last hour, really what I need is a change of pace, so I take to the trees. The wood is different here too, it smells more of the water that runs underfoot through the soil, and falls apart easily under my claws. They shred the bark on contact, I barely make it up onto the lowest branch and the scramble has me out of breath. I cling to that solitary branch for longer than I know I probably should, it's likely my scent is left in those claw marks that work their way all the way up to this low hanging spot, I'd be better off to move on before I draw too much attention.

It takes a little resolve, but finally I convince myself to move forward. The first few leaps are clumsy, embarrassing even, and the jungle is quick to pipe up. At first I'm startled when I hear the jeering and a cold shiver crawls down my spine, before pairs of gleaming eyes catch mine and I relax. The dark fur around the eyes disguises him amongst the shade, I almost miss him altogether in my first fearful glance over, but then it would be impossible not to notice them with a more careful search. His eyes are gleaming green-blue, gorgeous and captivating with their joyous upturn. At first I'm a bit offended at his laughter, but then again I've been making sloppy work of getting around this place that is rightfully his home. A purple flower is woven into his fur, it's not like any I've ever seen at home though there have been many of them around the jungle floor.

"You must be here for the Festival, yeah?" I dip my head in respect to him, he has a surprisingly tender voice that disarms me quickly. A kitten is at his side, much smaller than us both with its fur in patches.

My loss in pride causes a warmth to spread under my fur. "Is it that obvious?" I mumble back to him, a sense of over self awareness making my voice crack with my attempt to be hushed. It could be dangerous to make our positions known to any potential waiting predators, and I still haven't seen any. Somehow, not seeing them is worse than knowing what they look, sound, and smell like.

"Don't worry about it," he huffs dismissively, "you're not doing too bad. The name's Ube, my little one here is Anemone." The young patched kitten mumbles a greeting past stifled giggles, it relieves my anxious state of mind to bring joy to them.

"Kaneli, it's nice to meet you." In anticipation I give a sweep of the area, there's nothing below us rustling and the jungle is quiet where we are. It seems we're alone, I'd be worried about that more if it weren't for the snickering kitten, it makes me feel safe to have found someone else here. I wasn't sure on the way about how receptive the native cats of the area would be to outsiders and visitors, even during festivities. "Uhmm... do you think it would be okay if... I mean, I mean could you- uh, give me directions maybe?"

Ube gives me a kind smile, carefully slinks over to my branch and brushes my shoulder with the tip of his tail on the way by, perched carefully on his feet while I cling for dear life to the soggy-barked branch. It's a reassuring and friendly gesture, he tilts his head back to my direction. "Just follow me closely. I can get you where you need to go! Anemone and I were just on our way to the Feather Festival to join the festivities and visit with their other parent. You can trust me to keep you safe."

It's an overwhelming relief to hear and I can feel my whole body relax, my claws are sore from gripping so tightly but with Ube's guidance, and even Anemone's little quips now and again about my posture, I'm able to get the hang of traveling along the trees before they bring me to one with lower-hanging branches that we can easily leap from to the ground. We're able to stop by a nearby stream that cuts through the overgrowth and I'm offered a chance to rest and recuperate, one I take gratefully. The water is much murkier and warmer than I'm used to, the icy floes back home are always melting into the river to create crystal clear, frigid waters. It is still a relief from the humid air, however, and I'll take anything I can get. After that and a quick stop to show me how to properly track and hunt the common local prey, the three of us are able to make it to the festivities.

Maybe my opinion would have been different if I'd arrived on a different side of the river, but I find myself immediately more drawn to the Cliffside clowder... even if they seem more withdrawn, I'm enamored by the secret way they communicate, I have a lot to learn here.

In my anticipation, I'm too nervous to sleep. The sound of bugs chirping and ringing out in the dense wooded area even in a place where there is cracked concrete once dominated by mankind is perpetual and unending, it shocks me awake every time I think I might be fit to drift off, and then I catch myself in a loop of thoughts. I'm eager to get started. I'm afraid of what a mistake in this place might cost me. I'm excited to make new friends. I'm bubbling with anxiety over whether or not the locals will like me and want to clue me in to their methods and lifestyle... it's all so much.

By the time the morning sun rises, I am absolutely buzzing and bouncing on my paws. The fur on the back of my neck stands on end and even as I yawn nearly every five minutes, daydreaming of a nap to come, I don't feel the least bit weary or tired. I pad my way over to the meeting spot for the festival, and look up to where Ube has told me Kardal will be, announcing the rules of the event. When I watch the patched grey, orange, and white tom step forward with supports bound to him that I've never seen before, another trill of eagerness causes trembles all the way down to my tail. I'm already making eye contact with Ube and Anemone when the announcements are made, and as the feather drops we are off. Bounding into the forest, quieting as we separate.

I'm not sure what I'll find, but in the first hours of my hunt I am hopeful... There are many bright birds flying around in flocks, perching with their young... I've seen pink, yellow, green, orange... so far, no blue. I push forward, then I see something curious. A hollow within a tree, then another... two, they're pretty close though in separate trees. I wonder if they might be good nesting spots, and perhaps if I'm lucky, a feather might be left behind?

Rufus leads his exploration crew into the jungles. Rufus as always was unfazed by the dense surroundings as they trailed their way along the foot of the cliffs. it was here they first met the cliffside clouder. though at first wary the cats eased as they heard about the feather events. it was an exciting new concept for them, especially for the ever-energetic Rufus and headstrong hawks flight. while stormy sea kept his reservations about playing along with these weird new cats his leader Rufus insisted on joining them in the friendly competition. stormy sea hoping it would remain friendly but having doubts.

The first day in the jungle. Just me and Mitto. It was not really... Bad? I think. we did manage to find shelter and get some food. I just dislike the atmosphere here, it's so damp and wet and hot, there isn't much sunlight in the jungle but how can it be so hot there. Mitto was so excited and just roaming around our newly found shelter. Before Mitto sets of I asked him to get some comfy leaf or something for us to sleep on. Our shelter was not that bad, it's just a bit wet here and there.

Not to mention that in the shelter, there was a lot I mean A LOT of bugs and other creepy crawlies under rocks and leafs. And also there is this strange sound I heard while I was looking for Mitto. It was like something just jumped from a tree. Mitto would take a closer look, but me... I do the opposite. I take a step back and run. I don't know what it was but hopefully it's not after me or Mitto.

I ran back panting because I ran out of breath. Then I found Mitto near the shelter, he was staring at a centipede under a certain plant. I was indeed relived that he is not hurt or something. My heart still pounding after that encounter with that... THING.

It was dusk, and it's getting dark quick. I was scared that thing might be lurking in the shadows waiting for a time to strike. Mitto and I managed to get some tiny rodents and it was not too far from the shelter. I have a feeling that I might have a night mare about it, but Mitto encouraged me. I'm glad I'm not alone here or might just faint because of fear crawling trough my fur. The tiny rodents was not bad, its better that going out starving.

It was night time. I couldn't rest, thinking about that thing over and over. What if it's coming here? What if it's stalking us? W-what if it's haunting us. Continuous thinking in my head. Mitto woke up, and he said he heard me muttering with a scared voice. Mitto hugs me, it feels warm and cozy. So we curled up and fell a sleep

Prompt Response: Stone, A63

As Stone raced into the jungle, he followed several of the curly coated cityside cats. Surely the locals would have a good idea of where to start looking for the scarlet macaw feathers? Weaving through the jungle trails, Stone kept glancing around in awe of these strange plants and sounds. Suddenly he realized he was falling behind! Bursting out of the tree line, he could see one of the local cats jumping onto the far bank of a river having used the rocks just poking above the water to hop across. Of course with Stone's luck he would have to jump across river rocks! Stone glanced up and down the riverbank. There had to be another way across, right? No, there was nothing in sight that he could use to cross the river instead. As Stone stood there, his determination grew. He would make it across. There was no way he'd fall in! Like he'd done countless times before... on the narrower river back home... whose rocks were higher above the water and less slick... Very nervous, Stone glanced at the water. He couldn't see anything lurking beneath the surface... He shook his head. He could do this! Stone back up and gave himself a good shake before racing forward. He leaped forward —

Prompt Response: POV :Tuhka #N89
It was just me and my brother harakka, it was our first day in the jungle, we had set our paws into this jungle a few hours earlier.. but as we adventured deeper it seemed as if the daylight was completly gone..
"hey tuhka? are you sure we are going the right way?" harakka asked me..
"i..i dont know, its pretty hard to navigate in here.." i answered as i looked around the dense jungle forest thats when i saw something move under a bush
"what was that?" i asked as i looked closer but there wasnt anything anymore

"what? i dont see anything? are you sure you saw something?" my brother replied

"yes! i am 100% sure there was something under that bush" i sighed, "we should build a shelter soon, i dont want to know what kind of creatures there is in this jungle at night" i shook my fur at the thought of being awake in the darkness of the night

"yeah, i suppose youre right.. lets look for a place to build our shelter" harakka replied, i knew he didnt want to stay put for long but we had to rest and find something to eat

"lets head that way it seems like it isnt as dense there" i said as i took started walking towards where there was a little bit of light left from the sun

as me and my brother walked for a little while, the last of the sunlight was nearly gone

"i suppose that could work" i said as i saw an abandoned den under a trees roots, "ill go get us some food, could you gather us some moss so we dont have to sleep on a hard ground" i asked my brother

as he nodded as an answer i left to look for some prey for us to eat, after a while of looking i found a few mice that i could try to catch but as i was about to catch one of them i slipped on some mud that hadnt dried up yet, thats when i saw a pair of eyes staring at me from the darkness..i didnt stop to ask questions and ran as far as i could until i had to catch my breath... when i looked around i realised i was lost... but what was worse was that harakka was alone..and i know how much he despises being alone in a new place.. i had to find back to the den.. i couldnt leave him there

as i started looking for the den i saw a big lizard, i had to catch it, or atleast try to, i was hungry and if i found back to where harakka was we both could share it, but before i could leap to try and catch it i realised i had walked in a some kind of circle i was back near the den.. but where was harakka? i didnt know but i still decided to catch the lizard... after catching it i went into the den..harakka had already found us moss to sleep on.. but he was no where to be seen... "Harakka! where are you?" i shouted trying to get an response but i didnt get a reply.. "harakka!" I shouted again..with no luck of getting an answer.. i was scared.. had something happened to him?.. thats when i heard some rustling behind the bushes "haraka? is that you?" i asked "tuhka? where were you? i have been looking for you for ages!" i went to hug him "im sorry.. i got lost as i was hunting" i said as i let go of him

"did you catch anything? are you okay?" he asked

"yeah i catched a huge lizard and dont worry im fine" i replied as i yawned "lets eat and then head to sleep " harakka just nodded as an answer... we both went into the den and shared the lizard togeheter before going to sleep
i didnt fall asleep right away but soon enough i did

neither of us woke up that night..we both were pretty tired after the day of traveling so that must be why, but im glad we both got to sleep enough for our first night
