After Nathan brought
Soroni back to Winter River, Karl knew that an Echobi would make the perfect companion for him while he did work around the property. Direwood had recently brought in some feral Echobis, and after a call from Nathan, he was on his way to meet one of his own.
The male they had for Karl greeted him with a growl and a quick snap of his jaws, but Karl wasn't the least bit discouraged. Apparently, biting was par for the course with this one. He had already nipped someone else, but didn't use enough force to cause serious injury. Karl imagined he wasn't happy about his new environment. Yet.
"You're a spirited one, aren't you?" he asked, keeping a healthy distance so the canine would feel safer. "That's good! I like a little spirit."
The Echobi sat back on his haunches and huffed, unimpressed by this human. Whatever the man wanted with him, he wasn't interested. He was ready to go back to his wild home anytime now. A human couldn't possibly give him anything better than that, right?
"Think I'll call you Wulf. You okay with that?" Karl continued. It was clear that he wasn't giving up or going away anytime soon. That was fine. Wulf could play the stubborn game too. If he held out long enough...
squeak... squeak... squeak...What was that? Wulf's ears perked up, but he remained where he was, his lip still curled in displeasure.
"I brought you somethin'. You can have it even if you decide you don't like me."
Karl held out a tan, plush bunny he'd been holding behind his back and squeezed its tummy, producing the squeaking sound again. Wulf had never seen anything like that before. He stopped baring his teeth, tilting his head to one side as he considered this offering.
"Here you go. It's yours." He took a step forward and extended his arm, holding the bunny out to Wulf. At first, the Echobi didn't react, but after a moment he stretched his head forward to give it a sniff. Then, suddenly, he snatched the bunny from Karl's hand. It squeaked as his jaws closed around it.
Wulf settled down with the toy, squeaking it several times. His tail gave a wag, and Karl grinned at him.
"Atta boy," he praised as he reached out to carefully rest his hand against the back of Wulf's neck, rubbing his mane a little. The canine growled a little, but didn't snap.
"Yeah. We're gonna be good friends. I can tell."
There was still a lot of work to do, but Karl was confident that everything would turn out fine.
