When Nathan first heard about the rare, canine-like Echobi, his heart went out to those that had been given inappropriate care by people who were poorly equipped to provide them with save, loving homes. After hours upon hours of research and some heavy modifications to the Winter River property, he contacted the Direwood Racers organization to offer a welcoming home to any in need. They happened to have one that they believed was suitable for a new trainer, so he packed a few bags and headed to their facility to meet her.

She was brought in from a home where she had been confined and neglected. Things like love and play were mostly foreign concepts to her, and she was extremely shy around humans. Aggression wasn't a problem with this Echobi, but her timid behavior made her difficult to get close to. Nathan was a very patient man though, and planned to give her all the time she needed to warm up to him.

During their first meeting, she kept as much space as possible between them, and she never took her eyes off of him. Even a single step forward got her on her paws to move further away. Deciding that it was best to give her space, Nathan sat down in the grass as close as she would allow and talked to her. When she realized that his words were for her, she rested her head on her paws and tilted her ears his way. That was enough for Nathan. For hours, she rested in the sun while he told her all about Winter River and the dogs that lived there. Then he moved on to stories, from fairytales to folklore to modern fiction. With each hour that passed, she circled him and moved a little closer. He remained where he was, and finally, she laid down next to him, leaving only a few inches between them.

When she seemed relaxed enough, Nathan carefully reached out to rub her cheek, and she allowed it. Her tail gave a few wags in response. (344 words)
