The branches of the douglas fir trees wobbled lightly to the movement of the wind.
The streams will probably be crowded with salmon and other delectables for him to eat today.
Not that it mattered, he can’t even get hungry anymore. He’s almost fully transparent now, one or so years away from becoming a ghost cursed to this land forever. It’s just the persistent thought of “get out of here” playing in his head like a mantra nowadays. He’s been trapped in this forest for eons now, he saw the barn humans come and go as they please, but he’s never gotten the chance to do the same.
He had been told by Starclan when he died, that the only way out of this curse is to pass it onto another cat. They had figured that this would teach him a lesson, and cause him to be empathetic to the next spirit in line. Alas, all he wanted to do was find a cat, pass it on and leave as soon as he could. It didn’t matter who they were.
A twig snapped a few trees beside him and he whipped his head in the direction. He crouched down out of instinct. A squirrel? An injured bird perhaps?

As he crawled over to where he heard the branch crack, he started to hear mumbling that made him uneasy. “Maybe I really am going insane.” he humored himself in his head. As he snuck closer, he looked through the bushes and had to hold back a gasp.

Another cat? He felt the urge to laugh. From here he could barely see their pelt, it looked like a kitty pet, too fluffy and well taken care of.
No, this- this is Starclan playing a joke on me. He looked up as if Starclan could see him now and he mouthed quite a few words to them that his mother would not have approved of. He focused back on the cat only to find them gone. “Oh Starclan, I took my eyes off them for one seco-

Hello!”
A loud and surprisingly squeaky voice rang through his head as he jumped out of the bush and into the best defense pose he could manage. He tried his best at a hiss, but all that came out was a stubborn meow.
The other cat’s eyes widened.
Oh no, do you not speak?
He thought for a moment. What’s the point in wasting breath on a cat that he was going to kill anyway?
He shook his head.
The fluffy cat narrowed their eyes and jutted its bottom lip, almost too dramatic for a normal thinking expression.
Well, I’m not sure how to communicate with you then, but I’m Teddy!
Teddy put on a huge toothy smile as if that made them look friendlier.
He deadpanned. This is going to be harder than he thought.
Looking over at the clearing, he meowed, and looked back to Teddy, and meowed again.
Teddy’s eyes theatrically widened again and they nodded slowly.
Ohhh, are you trying to say that your name is Tree?
He mentally face-palmed. No, I want you to go OVER there so I can kill you, dumb cat.
Giving up, he got up from where he was still in a tense pose and started to walk off. Teddy followed, unsure of what to do.
Y’know, next time you try and hide from somebody, maybe give those weird glowy antlers of yours a trim?
He held back a growl. Fine, he’d play into this. A social cat like this “Teddy” needs socialization. As soon as he can get close enough, he could end this nightmare.

----

Within a few months, the seasons had changed and he had gone against his original plan and had gotten slightly attached to Teddy, though he would never admit it. Every time he had a chance to take the pounce, Teddy would come up with something new to distract him. It was exhausting, but it was nice to have company.
He had learned that Teddy was indeed a kitty pet, but they had also been in a clan. Teddy never told him why they had been thrown out, but it would only give him more of an excuse to become attached to the cat, so he never asked.
Teddy, on the other hand, had learned nearly nothing about this spirit that they've nicknamed "Tree". He would carve words in the dirt occasionally to answer small questions, but questions as to who he is and what he’s doing here were left unanswered. Teddy doesn’t mind though, a lot of their past clanmates weren’t big on sharing either. It was nice to have a friend who wouldn’t judge them for their bubbly and oblivious personality.
Teddy assumed they were both happy, two lone cats in a huge forest with even bigger possibilities.

When two more cats came around, things started to change. One with a cinnamon coat, dawning a sunflower on her head, and another with blue fur and piercing green eyes.
Teddy was absolutely ecstatic to meet them, even if the blue-furred cat, Frosty, had been a bit hostile to them at first. The other cat, Tasha, was almost as bubbly as Teddy was, which made for the greatest (and most annoying) conversations one could ever have.
Tree on the other hand, felt a mixture of furiousness and relief. Relief for the fact that he had two more cats to chose from, and that he didn’t have to kill Teddy.
Furious, though, when after a few weeks had passed, the three of them had grown incredibly close, closer than him and Teddy.

He wasn’t jealous, he simply couldn’t be. He just hated when he saw his new friend walking outside the boundaries of the forest with the two other cats, boundaries he couldn't leave.
He used this private time of his to practice. One of them had to go, and it couldn't be Teddy. He wouldn't be able to take the shame. If he moved quickly, he could trade one of the other two's life with his curse and escape, leaving Teddy and whoever was leftover having no one to blame but a bear in the forest or a stray wolf.
He could get out of this forsaken forest, and live his life the way he felt he deserved. And he would do it today.

----

I wonder where they went? Teddy scouted around the forest, trying to find their friends.
Tree?” they called out, hoping their spirit friend would appear like he always did.
Teddy hadn’t seen Tree in a while after Frosty and Tasha got here. Admittedly it was their own fault for hanging out with the two cats all the time, but who could blame them? They reminded Teddy of their old clan, that even now, they held close to their heart.
After a few moments of eerie silence in the forest, there wasn’t a single movement, not a single gust of wind. That’s when Teddy heard it.
Crows flew from their spots on the tree branches in all directions as Teddy sprinted towards the spot they had heard distressed meowing and aggressive hissing.
There they were, surrounded by the tall barely fields, Frosty on the ground, clearly injured. Tasha was behind Frosty, hissing at the attacker, but ultimately not making a move out of fear.
Teddy was shocked when they saw the forest spirit, ready to attack their newly found friends.
Tree! What are you doing?
Tree paused, visibly disturbed that Teddy had arrived, but blatantly disregarded their presence and started stalking closer to the two cats.

Within the blink of an eye, Teddy was positioned in front of the two cats.
No communication was needed between the two of them. Teddy knew that Tree had a mission to fulfill, and Tree knew that Teddy would fight to guarantee their friend’s safety.
Tree started to stalk towards Teddy, only to pause, a sick look on his face.
Teddy stayed alert. Tree was a tricky cat, full of surprises. But there were no surprises this time. Tree looked down at his paws as he started to become more and more transparent.
Teddy cautiously stalked up to Tree as he collapsed to the ground.
He circled through many emotions at that moment. Fear, anger, gratefulness.
He and Teddy made eye contact.
Letting out a small sigh, he closed his eyes as he fully disappeared.

Is he dead?” Frosty asked, feeling a bit more confident after Tasha had partially healed her.
Teddy looked back to the spot Tree was, still lightly feeling his presence among them.
No. But I have a feeling we won’t be seeing him again.” She stood there for a few minutes, lost in thought until a distraught meow reached her ears.
She scolded herself for being so inconsiderate and rushed over to her friends.
Frosty rolled her eyes at Teddy’s overly concerned expression.
I’m fine you puffball, just a little scratched up.
Teddy glanced towards Tasha for confirmation, seeing her eye twitch a little.
Just a little scratched up? A little? Do you know how many herbs I’ve had to use on you to-
As Tasha continued to rant about herbs and injuries, Frosty sighed and leaned over to Teddy, trying to ignore the one-sided squabbling.
So, do you think you’ll end up with antlers like Tree?
Teddy gasped, thinking Frosty was serious.
Do you think I will? Oh my goodness that would be so cool-
Teddy started to rave about how cool it would be to have antlers, going on and on about the anatomy, structure, pros, and cons of having such features.
Frosty covered her ears with her paws, wishing she was anywhere but here.
Tree, she thought, please come back, you can take my place, I swear, I’d rather be a tree spirit than have to listen to this daily...

As they slowly helped Frost back into a safer place in the forest, Teddy paused.
I’ll catch up to you guys!
They murmured their agreeance and continued to argue about Frosty's injuries.
Teddy looked around the forest, hoping to spot something. Or someone.
As she turned around, she froze.
A white deer stared at her from among the trees, not out of fear, but curiosity. Its antlers were bright and magnificent. If Teddy could squint hard enough, they could barely make out the transparent tips of the antlers.
The deer eventually huffed and tore off into the distance.
Teddy thought for a moment, then shook their head with a small smile, running off to join her friends in this big wide forest that they could call their own.

prompt: A cat of many titles and few friends, as intangible as a dream and as mysterious as a fallen star. Nimbus comes and Nimbus goes, that’s all there is know about Nimbus – and as for who he is? That is a riddle many have partaken in their time, and each answer is wilder than the last. It was not always just Nimbus, however. There was his sister – Cirrus, before she was crushed like a grape beneath the shoe.

Some claim that Nimbus is a prince, seeking a means of resurrecting his dearest sister so that they may rule side by side. He certainly has the pelt, charm and cunning to be one. Others say that he is an assassin, trained in subterfuge and master of the finer points of death. Nimbus is certainly deadly. Few suggest that Nimbus is just a mirage, a rumour stirred up by the sight of a pelt as pale as death. Pay no heed to those, Nimbus purrs, he certainly does not wear a coat of death and he certainly is no omen.

In truth, one may never hope to truly know Nimbus – for he is his own mystery. Does anyone truly know themselves? Or are we always shifting and evolving? Like clouds in the sky, tossed by errant winds. Nimbus certainly does like to keep others on their toes, always guessing, always wondering.

The Garages
─────────o──────────
⏮ ▶ ⏭

Firewalker was the fuse.

The butterfly effect states that it only takes a small change to lead to dramatic events. The flap of a butterfly's wings can shift the course of a tornado. A grain of sand shifting can lead to an avalanche. A quiet decision made under the cold eyes of the ever-watching stars can lead to the End of an era, years after all those currently living have been long gone.

The beginning of the End was quiet. Unassuming. A Clan takes in a mildly cursed cat and that's it. The stage is set.

The fuse is lit.

─────────

Firewalker themselves was not a bad cat. Not even misguided— though some in the future will wish they were. Nor were they a victim of circumstance. In fact, all things considered, Firewalker was a decent cat. Sure, they had their ups and downs, but doesn't everyone? Stealing their favorite prey from the freshkill pile wasn't a sin. Neither was falling in love, or allowing their temper to occasionally get the best of them. Nor was their curse, as quiet and unassuming as it was. In any other Clan it would have been celebrated, with their descendants becoming praised and welcomed wherever they went.

Their name was an apt descriptor. Firewalker left trails of cinders wherever they walked, sneezing tiny flames when they got sick and occasionally accidentally searing freshkill. But the desert is a strange place, and a cat who occasionally sneezes fire isn't the strangest thing lurking in the sands and sagebrush. And who doesn't want a cat in their Clan who acts as a heating pad on chilly winter nights?

And so, the Clan of Eternal Sun brought them into their fold. And they played in the sun, living a relatively simple life. And they fell in love, and they raised a family, and their kits did the same, and, well that was the real downfall, wasn't it? A lone kit, with the burning ache of embers in their paws, and the twisting things in the desert that whisper lies and promise power, power at a cost no one knew of and that no one would have guessed and they wanted to take it all back—

─────────

And in the end, who Firewalker was mattered little in the grand scheme of things.

Because, in the End, they were little more than a butterfly fanning the flames of something More.

And that was all they would be remembered for.

      prompt:

Thistlefog has been wandering for as long as he can remember. There was many a time, before he made that fateful trip into the wood, that he had desired something more for himself, his life.. now he can hardly remember them, their faces blurred by memories lost to time and the endless twisting limbs of same-colored bark and thorn.

He had been a fresh warrior, eager to prove himself and even more eager to fit in. Drizzleclan warriors aren't exactly known for their kindness and he was desperate to prove that he wasn't easily picked on or put off by a dangerous situation. Oh if he could go back.. he'd have turned around the moment the dare came from beaverbrook's mouth.. but such are the ways of young stupid cats. He had been eager to impress the only molly in their little group, a lithe she-cat who went by luna. She was pretty, and he was absolutely smitten. When Beaverbrook suggested he spend only a few seconds within wandering wood, he had thought nothing of it. His gaze falling on luna, and the excitement in her eyes, he knew he could not turn down the dare or risk losing her potential affections. Thistlefog had heard the rumors, of course, of what went on in the wood, of what had happened to make it so cursed and mangled, and of what happened to cats who stepped foot within it's borders. Of course, he had never seen anything happen to any cat. It had been generations since a cat had disappeared in there, and Thistlefog chose to chock it up to mere fantasy. It was just a wood afterall, no different than the great cypress that surrounded drizzleclan camp.

      Boy was he wrong.

Thistlefog and the group of young-warriors made their way through the swamp, finally coming across the boundary line. The warning stones had been set out, warning off foolish cats from entering. The group looked at it for a moment, before continuing on. Disregarding the warnings, disregarding all common sense in favor of proving themselves to one another. We aren't scared, no, we are brave and we're going to fight a giant today. Well this was a battle one of them would not win. As the group sighted the treeline every cat halted, bodies tense with anticipation. Thistlefog stepped forward, turning to look at his companions with excitement in his eyes. He was put off however, by the anxiety in luna's.

"Maybe we shouldn't do this." she suggested, shifting nervously on the sodden earth.
"What? Scared your little crush will balk out? No way. Get moving Thistlefog." Beaverbrook jerked his head in the direction of the wandering wood's treeline. His paw coming out to block Luna from moving towards him. "No one backs out of a dare." he spoke with finality in his tone, and there would be no arguing with him. Beaverbrook was the ring leader, and the other young warriors ran circles around him, desperate to impress and earn his approval. Thistlefog knew if he backed out this dare he'd be socially ostracized, but he also knew that Beaverbrook was jealous. The thought hit him square in the chest. Jealous of him, and his relationship with Luna.

Thistlefog made his way towards the wandering wood, terror in his heart but the need to prove himself outweighing any common-sense. As he approached the wood he felt his fur begin to stand on end, his gaze flashed between the trees, only to see the same thing for miles. He took a breath, looked back at his companions, and the fear in Luna's eyes alongside the excitement and triumph in the rest of the group's.

And then stepped into the wood.

It was anticlimactic at first, nothing happened. He simply stepped across the boundary line and the world seemed to go silent, he turned to look behind him, as he should be able to still see his clanmates, and then they were gone. Behind him was simply more forest, as if he had wandered deeper in the woods than just a few paw-steps. Panic flashed in through his veins as he turned a circle. "Luna?" he called. "Beaverbrook, Carrionear, Harrierbird?" he shouted, desperate now. His voice rising in pitch with each name, as he turned to find more trees. All the same, no end in sight.
By all the souls. The signs weren't lying.

Then came the regret, the anguish and the anger at himself and his stupidity. His desire to prove himself had might as well just gotten him killed.. From then on Thistlefog wandered. All sense of time lost to the poor tom, who was pushed and shoved by trees that moved and haunted from sleep by howls in the night and thick fog that smothered every sense. He was pulled off the path by biting brambles and shoved through bushes and openings in the leaves, all the while the trees remained solid and stoic and malicious in their compliance to his desire to prove himself. Prove himself they seemed to echo, they seemed to laugh at him. Well, now you get to be a big boy and find your way out of this mess.

Thistlefog continued to wander, he moved without knowing which direction to go, he moved with only one thought: get out. A long day, or at least, what he hoped was a day, had just passed, and as he meandered in a chosen direction he reminisced on the days that he could no longer remember fully. Flashes of memories swirling in his mind, anything to pass the grueling time.. As he pushed through a particularly thick bush, and struggled through brambles that clawed at him, he wasn't aware he was out until the sunlight struck his fur. He stumbled out of the wood, panting with the effort of moving through the brambles and wildly looked around at his home.. drizzleclan territory. The wood had set him free, but at what cost?

The she-cat sat up with a gasp, her head spinning and a dull ache running through her fur. Her stomach churned, and she quickly brought a paw to her forehead, groaning.

Snow fell lightly onto her damp pelt, and leafless trees loomed above her from every angle. Where am I?, she wondered, looking around the dark, frosty forest. She paused, looking down at her paws. Realization struck. Who am I?!

Jumping to her paws, she whipped her head around, swaying slightly. She couldn't remember a thing. Why was she in this strange forest, full of dead trees? Where were...

Her littermates! She began to call out for them, only to pause, uncertain. What were their names again? Had they even been given names? Did she have a name?

Bewildered, and starting to get quite anxious, she sat down with a soft crunch in the snow. Shutting her eyes as tightly as she could, she tried to remember something, anything, that would explain why she was here. Or at least who she was.

She could still remember her siblings, as fuzzy as those memories were. The little black tom kit and the grey tabby she couldn't quite make out. She remembered... playing with them, out by the house, out by the river. The river.

Something in her mind clicked, and she was thrust into the memory, the swirling, churning river, thunder and lightning overhead, her siblings shrieking and bobbing down the water. She was in the river - cold, and wet. She shivered. They must have... drowned.

Wait. She was alive, wasn't she? Maybe her siblings had survived, too. Maybe they remembered... anything. She could hear a river somewhere in the distance - maybe they were even close by. A bit more hopeful, she began trotting on stiff, wobbling legs towards the sound. Stiff... longer legs.

She froze. Looked at herself.

Oh. She... wasn't a kit anymore? But surely that wasn't true. She was just a kit... yesterday. Last week? It didn't feel like very long ago. Or was that only because it was all she could remember?

Numbly, she lifted her paw, noting the scars lining the pad. How did those get there? She wasn't sure. Maybe she had scraped them, rushing down that river. Maybe she had lived a whole other life, one she couldn't remember right now. Maybe...

Am I dead? Shivering, she pushed that thought to the back of her mind. Surely she wasn't dead, if her mind ached and a chill wind ran through her fur? She shook out her pelt, clearing that from her mind. Of course she wasn't dead. She just needed help... there had to be cats around willing to help.

She started off nervously, back towards the sound of the river, even if her siblings probably weren't waiting for her there. Some other cat would be, and they could help her find them, or at the very least help her find her way. She couldn't just be alone here, in the snow, and the cold, and the dead trees. Some cat was here. Some cat would help her.

...Right?
