in their life - surely they've made lots of friends?
To win them, pick an animal "companion" who has travelled
with them throughout their life and write about the two of them.
You can include (but are not limited to) the following:

Lost. All she could remember through the searing heat of the desert, ringing in her ears, and dryness on her tongue was that she was lost. Tiny Cypress cried out weakly through the burning heat over and over again, trying to keep cool under a gritty and sandy ledge that barely covered her whole kit body. How was she to survive this? With no mama, friends, or father to help and protect her? Cypress managed one last distressed squeak before falling unconscious. There was no hope. Until in her dying sleep, she briefly heard the scuttle of some sort of prey animal. A spikey lizard of some sort licked his eyes blankly with his tongue, observing his new find in the den that was supposed to be his.

The Thorny Devil returned, with a semi-dead palm leaf filled with droplets of pure, fresh, bright-tasting water from the human homes hidden ever so carefully beyond the sandy, hot hills. Cypress remembers him washing his tiny feet in the water and placing it on her parched lips so she would finally get the drink of water that would save her life. Soon, the dying she-kit awoke at the taste of water and the sight of a curious lizard hovering over her golden tabby-furred cheek, "H-he-hello." Cypress whispered calmly, untouched by the weird presence of the prey animal. The lizard, in turn, tilted his head and took a few tiny steps back, making a high-pitched but in his own way of a calm response. Cypress began living with that creature who, in her mind, saved her from the brink of death which she was ever so grateful for.

The she-kit helped him dig out a large tunnel wide enough for both of them comfortably to hide from the searing heat during the day and hunt at night when the sun wasn't shining. They learned each other's language with tail flicks, head shakes, and nods. After the first two weeks, she first spoke to him clearly and found his name was unoriginally Thorn. Thorn acted tough and scary but to Cypress, he was a kind-hearted prey animal and she vowed to only eat other animals and protect him in turn. After more humans came and settled, left, and returned, both Cypress and Thorn had to move since the prey began disappearing due to the human's habits of destroying land they hid in.

They found a large hollowed-out fallen tree near a dead-tree forest where they made their new home, digging tunnels as they did before at their last known site of home. After that, they began traveling, curious to see what the world held for them both. They never stopped anywhere until she was found by the ocean with her thorny devil friend by a group of strange, smart hunter-cats. The cats invited Cypress to join and train as a warrior. Cypress answered with a question instead, her lizard friend crawling on top of her head, "Can Thorn come too?"

"Um... the lizard?" Nightfall asked uncertainly, humour edging her voice as the lizard sitting on the opposing cat's head licked its eye blankly. "Yes. He's specifically a Thorny Devil. More like a Thorny Angel, though." Nightfall and Cherrybounce exchanged a confused glance before Tansypetal pushed through the crowd and eyed the newcomer and her companion sceptically. A long, eerie silence passed through the gathering, curious crowd before Tansypetal nodded, letting herself smile, "As long as you can take care of him he will be seen as a clan member too."

The crowd gasped, mostly out of interest and Tansypetal's mate pushed through the crowd to join her side, bowing his head in a welcoming manner to the Thorny Angel and his friend, "I'll be glad to show you two around if you'd like. Riverkit really, really wants to meet this... Thorny Devil." He smiled at her genuinely and Thorn leaped over to Thrushslip's head, nuzzling into his head fur and yawning, "Or... this little guy could get a nest made for him? There's a big crevice where you'll be sleeping. Come on then." As Thorn jumped on Thrushslip's head Cypress was about to nervously reach forward before she realized the fawn-colored tom was alright with her friend snuggled into his head fur.

The crevice was about twice the little reptile's size and already was being cleaned by Goldenleaf and her daughter, Riverkit, "Ooo! Momma, the lizard, and new cat!" She dashed over to Cypress and Thorn hopped down from Thrushslip's head and fearfully walked beside his feline friend, "Hi there." Goldenleaf murmured to the two newcomers warmly but her voice was filled with exaustion. Cypress told both new cats that she could finish up her and her companion's nest and Goldenleaf swept her kit around herself and nodded, yawning gratefully.

Thrushslip and the other two cats left them to be and Cypress stuffed some moss and left the cave to retrieve a dandelion for a pillow for her tiny friend. Her friend gratefully accepted and fell asleep. Cypress could not. She hadn't been around other cats her entire life... was there a way she could adapt? She got up and quietly stalked out of the den to the smooth stone ramp entrance to the ocean-side caved clan, staring at the sun as it dipped into the dark, blurry sea. Her lizard-friend awoke, almost as if he sensed her worried thoughts. Thorn sidled up next to her, hugging her head fur to his scaley, cold-blooded body. Somehow, that comforted the large she-cat into sleep as the moon rose overhead. She stopped wondering what the future would hold for them and more on how much she was grateful for her loyal, best friend.
