Prompt: Brackenflash pushed through the ferns under the trees into the open area on the edge of their territory, where the undergrowth and grasses faded into soft, sandy ground. He could hear the waves crashing on the beach and smell the salt on the air. As much as the forest was his home and where he preferred to be, the dense foliage overhead meant that if he wanted to feel direct sunlight on his pelt he had to make a special trip to the edge of the forest. His claws sunk into the soft sand, and the sun beamed down on him, warming his fur; his eyes closed with bliss.
His ears twitched as he heard the caw of seagulls. Turning his head, he saw a pair of seagulls dancing around on the sand, pecking at something. Dropping into a hunters crouch, he stalked towards them. Once he was within pouncing distance, he pushed up with his back legs. Unfortunately, his inexperienced paws slipped on the soft ground, and instead of one of the gulls, he ended up with sand in his mouth. He sat up, spitting the sand out as the sounds of the seagulls caws sounded in his ears- he could swear they were laughing at him.
Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed some movement. To his left was a small crab, stuck on it's back; one of its' claws was missing. This must have been what the seagulls had been pecking at, poor thing. He frowned, taking pity on the little injured creature. "Here little guy, let me help you" he muttered, reaching out with a paw to flip the crab over.
"OWWWW!" Brackenflash yowled, jerking his paw away from the crab. The crab, who had caught one of his toes in its' remaining claw, came flying with it. Brackenflash flailed his paw around, yowling his head off as he tried to dislodge the crab. Eventually he managed to fling the crab off, sending it flying across the sand towards the distant coast. He gave his paw a couple more shakes, cursing under his breath.
That's when he heard the cawing again- no, wait, that was actual laughter. Brackenflash whipped around, and noticed two cats from the neighbouring group rolling in laughter further down the beach. "Oy, that was absolutely
hilarious" One cat yowled in laughter, while the other mimicked Brackenflash's flailing as best he could while laughing as hard as he was. Brackenflash's ears burned with embarrassment and he scowled, turning to head back to the forest where he belonged.
That's the last time I help anything that pinches, he thought sulkily as he slipped back under the trees.
