Badgerkit groaned of boredom and rolled himself onto his back. "Ugh... Softkit. Are you bored?" He asked hopefully. Softkit sat up and shifted uncomfortably on her paws, "But what if Tansypetal catches us? She wouldn't be very happy with us and she's already been nice enough..." Badgerkit groaned dramatically and whined. "BUTTTTT why can't we just go? Please?" Softkit she shifted again and whimpered, "Oh alright..." Badgerkit grinned, "Yay!" Prompt: [ 103 words ] Coalkit was a good kit. More or less. He usually stayed close to Mother when they went for morning walks around the territory. But this time, Coalkit got distracted by a butterfly. It was a shimmering orange as the sun hit it. He got so caught up with chasing it, he didn't realize he'd gone all the way to the silver wall at one end of the lagoon. The bug, still in a state of panic due to the large furry thing chasing it, fluttered over the wall and disappeared. Coalkit slumped down, looked at his surroundings, and just...stayed there. Prompt: [ 238 words ] Silverkit rolled her eyes as she watched her stupid brother waddled his way to a freezing wet death in the lagoon. Stupid Coalkit, always getting distracted. She trudged after her delirious brother and her fur kept getting caught on prickers and bristles. With every new accessory in her pelt, Silverkit deepened the growl in her throat. After quite a long time of walking, she reached her brother. The she-cat was met with a guttural shriek when Coalkit saw the state of her fur.

"Come on! It's not that bad," she said grumpily. Coalkit let out a sigh of relief.
"I thought you were a monster coming to get me!" Silverkit scoffed, remembering the scary stories she told him. She attempted to shake off the prickers, but only dropped a few.
"Let's just get back to camp. Mother is probably worried sick." Coalkit paused trying to get prickers off his sister and nodded. The kits wandered back in the nearing dark with an icy breeze at their backs. Silverkit was leading them and eventually announced they were lost. Of course, she blamed Coalkit for this and attempted to use the stars to navigate. As expected, this didn't work. She again blamed Coalkit. Then, the tom decided to just try wandering again. So they wandered and wandered until they finally saw the camp entrance. Both kits raced into their Mother's arms and settled down for the night safe and warm.

“Is the storm over?”

At her sibling’s question, Kelpkit scooted cautiously to the edge of the scrape and peered out. A drop of moisture fell from the ferns and moss that grew in abundance from the fallen cedar log, and fell right upon her nose. She gave a little mew of shock before realizing it was just a droplet, not a sign of the storm’s ongoing presence.

“I think so!” she answered, more jauntily than she felt. When she didn’t hear a response, Kelpkit looked over her shoulder to peer back into the makeshift little burrow. In the dark, Sealkit seemed almost to glow, her pale fur a bright spot against the dark earth and moldering cedar.
“Is… Is everything okay?”

Sealkit moved over as her sibling crawled back to nestle down beside her. Now that the storm had passed, the reality of the situation was beginning to settle in, and alongside reality came icy fingers of fear, colder than the rain that had driven them into the hollow beneath the cedar log.

“I-i… How are we going to get back home?” she squeaked, and the silence that followed was deafening as both kits thought about how they had found themselves in this place.

They had been playing together on the edge of camp when the storm hit. Torrential rain poured down, obscuring vision, and the wind had roared like a mighty grizzly bear, shaking the trees and sending branches crashing to the ground. Panicked and unable to see through the driving rain, the kits tore off to where they thought camp had been, but in the storm’s melee, they had gotten turned around. It was a stroke of luck that Sealkit had found the hollow beneath the fallen cedar, and dragged Kelpkit in behind her to wait out the storm.

Kelpkit broke the silence first.
“Well, um… I guess. I guess we had better start trying to retrace our steps?” she offered, and was rewarded by a slight nod from Sealkit. Cautiously, both siblings crawled to the entrance of their makeshift den, then out into the forest.

In the aftermath of the storm, the forest was reborn. Sunlight streamed through the new gaps torn in the canopy, turning each droplet of water into a glittering jewel. Trees and fern beds steamed in the light, creating shimmering billows and mirages. In the distance, a lone bull elk strode majestic and enormous, seeming almost to glide through the ferns and the mist.

Sealkit’s heart fell in her chest. As beautiful as the forest was, she didn’t recognize anything she saw. None of the trees or rocks were familiar, and she couldn’t hear the joyful burbling of the stream that ran by her mother’s den. Lost and afraid, she turned to her sister with tears in her wide eyes.
“I don’t see anything familiar here!” she said with a sob.

Kelpkit swallowed; she didn’t recognize anything either.
“W-well, um,” she began, looking around for anything that might give her a sense of direction. “How about this way?”

The pair walked for what seemed like an age. Every sound was new and startling, and they spent more than a few minutes crouched in the shadow of logs and roots for fear of an eagle or some larger predator taking an interest in them. But even as the sun fell lower in the sky, they were forced to admit that they were no closer to being home than they had been, and the kits began to feel both hunger and despair.

But there! A rustle in the brush! Sealkit froze, her eyes wide; had something found them? Kelpkit moved in front of her sister, arching her back and giving the fiercest growl possible…!

“There you two are!”
Kelpkit’s hackles fell in surprise as a familiar red tabby muscled their way through the bracken to give each kit a cursory grooming and inspection. She knew who it was immediately, by sight and scent; this was Hawkstar, the leader of Havenclan! Had the whole clan been out looking for them? She decided to ask.

“Of course, little one!” Hawkstar answered with a kind, warm smile. “Now, let’s get home; your mother’s been worried sick, and so has the rest of the clan.”

Together, the trio trotted back to camp as night gently rolled through the forest. By the time its embrace had covered over Forest’s Heart, both Sealkit and Kelpkit were safe and warm in their den, asleep after their big adventure.
