He falls in love with the princess, and after returning her to the tower he tries a second time to steal her away at night. However, her parents follow the dogs as they're bringing the princess back, and discover what he's done. They sentance him to death, but before his execution, he asks to have one last smoke. As he retrieves his tinderbox he summons the dogs, who kill his captors. He then marries the princess, and the dogs attend the wedding.
