Enzi takes a deep breath. In, out. In, out. She can do this.

Kyber looks at her softly. "You don't have to do this today, you know. It's ok. Really."

"No, I'm going to. Besides, this is long overdue."

She looks at Kyber, heart swelling with love for the beautiful pastel lion. Yes, she can do this. For herself, for Kyber. For both of them.

"Would you like me to come with you?"

Enzi shakes her head. "No, but- thank you."

Kyber smiles. "Of course. I'll wait right out here for you."

The two lionesses embrace, then Enzi turns and walks into the house.

She pushes aside the thick burlap curtain serving as a door. The house, a place Enzi had spent her entire childhood, seems to sway under her feet. Her throat feels dry and she swallows.

"Um, mom? Dad? Can I- can I talk to you for a moment?"

The two lions look up from their books, happy grinning at their daughter.

"Of course dear," her mother says, father nodding in agreeance. They set down their books, calmly waiting for her to speak.

This is it. Enzi takes another breath, trying to calm her nerves and pounding heart.

"Mom, dad... I want to tell you that I've been dating someone."

She looks at her parents, trying to read their expressions. They don't look shocked, and possibly even seem pleased.

"Oh? Well, when can we meet the lucky lion? I'd like to have a word with him," her father says jokingly.

Here it comes.

"Well, um, actually... it's a lioness."

Her parents are quiet at this. Enzi holds her breath, waiting for their next move.

Enzi's mother is the first to speak. "Well, when can we meet her then?"

"Yeah, I'd like to meet her too," her father adds.

Enzi lets out a sigh of relief. "She's- she's actually outside," Enzi says, saking a little from the adrenaline rush. Her parents... they're ok with this! All that worrying, all those fears that they would disown her for falling in love with a lioness instead of a lion- it was all for nothing.

Kyber glances up at her anxiously as she walks out the door.

"How did it go? Are you ok? Are your parents-"

Enzi smiles, throwing her arms around her girlfriend. "Everything went great! They're ok with us!"

Kyber holds Enzi tight, burying her face in the lioness's fluff.

"Oh my goodness, that's wonderful! I-I love you so much!"

Enzi pulls back. "I love you too Kyber. But there is... something."

Kyber stares at her, relief disappearing. "What is it?"

"My parents want to meet you."

"Oh, is that all?" Kyber says with a laugh. "Well then my dear, please introduce me!"

As the sun sets past the distant hills, Enzi sits in perfect contentment. Her parents laugh with her girlfriend while they play cards together, all three happily smiling. Enzi looks around her. Everything is perfect. And all I had to do was have a little courage.

(This was added after 2:30 phst in the small chance that either an extension is made or that was the wrong time zone)

It was the day the Scout was due to start exploring the west side of their temporary camp. Volucris technically didn’t have permission to go west, but he had the council’s permission to go hunting with only an implied restriction on going west. Hunting could take you any direction if you caught a scent, after all, so who could blame him if he happened to end up on the west side. He was also supposed to be hunting smaller prey since he was going by himself but the council never seemed to notice that he never stuck by that rule.
While he was hunting, crossed over the scout’s footprints and smiled, they looked like she was running for fun rather than from danger. That’s a good sign. He turned somewhat to the north, wanting to avoid running into the scout and having to explain himself. He hadn’t really caught anything yet but he didn’t mind. He wanted something big this time.
Suddenly a thundering of paws came from the direction the scout had went. Startled, he hid in a bush and watched at the scout ran by, a shrieking bird screaming through the air after her. The bird looked very similar to him! He took this as a sign from the rain gods and threw himself out of the bushes, onto the bird. The scout continued to run away, probably mistaking the cacophony as it still chasing her or it hitting a branch.
He grappled with the bird as it whacked him with its wings and beak, trying to fly away. He hooked his claws in firmly and sent it crashing down to the jungle floor. They tussled and fought like writhing vipers, an onlooker could not have told where one ended and the other began. Locked in combat, they struck and swiped and bit and clawed until one stopped moving and the other stood up.
Volucris stood over his kill proudly, although he aches from several wounds. He dragged the bird to camp, interrupting the scout’s narration of the bird’s chase with his arrival.
“The beast is dead!” He cried, dropping the harpy eagle at the feet of the scout and her listeners.
He knew he’d get in trouble with the council later but it was worth it for the look of relief and roll of her eyes she gave him. [392]

Story: Terek nervously skittered across the cave floor towards his mother who was cowering in the corner. He dove under her legs, crouched close to the ground, ears pricked up and listening intently. The loud flapping of wing beats drew ever closer. Terek pressed against his mom, trying to not make a sound. The blood pounded in his ears as a huge feathered wing flashed past the front of the cave. A frustrated scream came from the bird's beak as it flew away.

--3 Years Later--

Terek purred as he nuzzled his mate's neck, enjoying the sun as their son, Jaeger, pounced on grasshoppers nearby. The grass around them rustled slightly in the soft breeze, ruffling Terek's mane.

"Alright, Kerel, take care," Terek said as Kerel pulled away, off to hunt.

"Of course, Terek," Kerel assured, looking at Jaeger, "Goodbye, Jaeger."

"Bye mom!" Jaeger squeaked.

Kerel chuckled and disappeared into the nearby grass. Terek laid his head down on his paws, watching his son carefully. The warm sun and occasional cool breeze made him drowsy, and before he knew it he had fallen asleep.

"RUN!"

Terek was startled from his slumber by the sound of a scream. Alarmed and dazed, he didn't register what was being said to him until Kerel emerged from the grass, panic written on her face.

"Run! He's coming!" She shouted, racing towards Terek. The blood drained from his face as he realized what was happening. He grabbed Jaeger by the scruff of his neck, ignoring the cub's indignant squeaks of protest. He ran towards the cave, his heart racing.

He was torn out of his tunnel vision by the shriek of his mate. He whipped his head around, only to see her in the talons of the large bird. His heart dropped to his stomach, and he felt his limbs freeze up. He stood, frozen, his son still clutched in his mouth. The triumphant screech of the bird brought him out of his trance, and he raced into the cave.

It's been one year since Kerel was taken from him. One year since that horrible creature took a mother from her young cub. One year since their lives had been turned upside down. And it was time for vengeance.

Terek gathered a few brave souls from his pride who were willing to venture out and fight. There were five of them. Himself, his son Jaeger (much to Terek's horror), Larok, Bokal, and Tryar. They set out for the bird's nest at dusk, hoping that it would be sleeping.

It seemed as though their prayers were answered. When they arrived at the nest, which was perched on the edge of a cliff, the beast had its' beak tucked under its wing. They attacked suddenly, and with no warning. Terek was the first to pounce, swallowing down the fear that had plagued him since he was a tiny cub.

It was a difficult battle, but they expected worse. It wasn't as terrifying as they made it out to be in their stories. But at least they won't be terrorized anymore.

Story: Skua watched as Thaddea danced around by the Shimmering Pool. He felt the urge to stand up and stride over to the gray and white lioness, to tell her Thaddea all the things he kept secret.

Including his love for her.

But alas, Skua was not confident or suave enough to pull something like that off. He didn't have the dashing looks or charming personality of the hero Thaddea deserved. He was just boring old Skua from the Northern Islands.

He sighed. He would never be able to tell Thaddea how he really felt.

Skua padded along the edge of the beach cliffs. Sandy gravel skittered away from him and bounced down the cliffs, their plinks swallowed by the roar of the ocean.

A screech suddenly ripped the air. Skua frantically glanced around, searching for the source of the cry, but there was no other lion around. A glimmer of a hunch flickered through his mind, and Skua slowly crept forward and peeked his head over the edge of the cliff.

No more than two tail-lengths below him, a lioness clung to a thin ledge on the cliff. Her blue eyes were wide with panic.

Skua inhaled sharply. "Thaddea?!"

"Help me!" she begged, reaching both forepaws upward. Her claws had been worn down to stubs by the hard stone of the cliff.

"How?" There was nothing around him that could work as a rope, and if he tried to reach down and grab Thaddea's scruff, he would tumble over himself.

Thaddea let out a cry as the ledge began to crumble away at the edges. If Skua didn't do something soon, he would lose her.

Skua took a deep breath. What he was about to do might kill them both. But there was no time to think of another solution.

He dug in his hind paws and leaned his torso over the cliff edge, careful to keep his balance. Thaddea reached up for him and latched onto his forelegs. Skua winced as his claws dug in, but didn't say anything. He carefully worked his hind paws away from the cliff, slowly dragging himself and Thaddea upward. His shoulders felt like they were about to dislocate themselves from Thaddea's weight, but he dared not adjust his grip on her.

As soon as they were safe, Skua let himself go limp, chest heaving. Thaddea disentangled herself and collapsed beside him.

"That was amazing," she panted. "You saved my life."

"It was nothing. Just one of my regular death-defying rescues." Skua grinned.

He was startled when Thaddea pressed her nose to his own, the gesture of love in Ayandar. When she pulled away, Skua was sure that his face was as red as the parrots that Thaddea talked to.

"I love you," she murmured.

Skua had been hoping for this moment his whole life.

"I love you too."
