Larkin
Larkin found herself apprehensive for the first time in a long while. When she was a puppy, she used to be fearful of many things; Dark places, loud noises, new people. She could not remember when exactly her hesitations started, but she knew one thing; her brother had always been there for her to lean on, and he was always her source of strength. But now, it was as if the exact opposite effect was happening. She was fearful...fearful about seeing her brother for the first time in a year. Since they had been separated after their first 5 months of life, she had not seen him once.
Would he have grown to dislike her, like he seemed to dislike everyone when they were so young? He was always so proud, he never let the other puppies and dogs at the rescue take advantage of him. Their mother had died early on, and they had both gotten terribly sick, the rescue taking them on free of charge to heal their ills. The other dogs immediately treated them like they did not exist...or rather shouldn't exist... And he stuck up for himself, and always believed there would be better things out there, for both him...and her. He always seemed so confident, and like nobody could get him down. He could take on the world.
And then...in the blink of an eye they were torn apart. She barely had a moment to say goodbye before she knew what was happening. She remembered the look of fear he had, for what seemed like the first time ever. They stood in the entryway to the lobby, both on leashes, their families prepared to take them away. Whenever he would get too sad, sad about their mother...sad about their exile from the other dogs...sad about their existence at the rescue...loney...she would do her best to comfort him. But now...he didn't just seem sad...and the fear reflecting in his eyes worried her deeply. How could he be scared?
She willed all the strength she had, her own body shaking from the nervousness she felt, about all that was going on around her. She nuzzled him, and licked his face, "I love you Ren, forever. We will never be alone because we have each other out in the world, forever and always," she spoke quietly, as she always did. She tried to be the confident one in that moment. With all her might she tried. She couldn't bear to see him worry. And after they had a few more moments, the families had their paperwork finished and they went their separate ways.
And now they would be together again, after that long year. A year in which...she had honestly thrived. It had been terrifying at first. She hated to reflect on the first few months especially. She had been so nervous...it seemed even worse once her brother was no longer around. But her people had been so amazing...they were so amazing. They worked with her every day, they built trust. And because of the trust she began to learn many new things. She could perform many sports, she was great at herding. She was great at meeting others now, dogs in the arenas she went to, and the many parks she played at. It truly had been the best months of her life.
She loved her brother, and missed him. But the ache in her heart had faded slowly as she accepted that they may never see eachother again, replaced with the love of her family. She still thought of him...but less often...and it was because of that, that she felt a tide of guilt. And again the fear that he might not recognize her...or even like her any longer! They were at the dog park then...she could see him...she began to feel a good sort of excitement. Could he see her? Her owners brought her into the pen between the parking lot and the open dog yard. And then they opened the gates…
Ren
A year had passed. The time and distance that separated the two was painstaking. Ren had always been so optimistic, so strong, so cunning, yet the time apart had just drained him… The moment his new family began dragging him from her, a deep fear settled in the pit of his stomach. Something he never felt so dreadfully strong, and new thoughts and worries pounded into his head. What if he would never see Larkin again? He had stayed strong all this time for her, yet he was being pulled apart from her, for what? He barked, he whimpered and he pulled away from the humans that called him theirs, he nipped and growled, yet they just kept pulling him from her.
Days turned into months, months turned into a year, and in that time, Ren had completely changed. He was treated well in his new home, pampered well, fed well, even had other collies to roam his newfound ranch with, yet Larkin was always in the back of his mind.
It has a way of messing with you, honestly. It lets you slip into a depressive state, one where you don’t want to socialize with anyone, much less do anything. Ren started letting himself go. First his mother dying, then his separation from his sister? It was just too much on his mind.
His human began to pick up on this however. She noticed all of his sad behavior, which slowly began to turn him skittish. She felt heartbroken for him, realizing that he hadn’t necessarily had the easiest life. So, she did the first thing she could think of. She contacted Larkins owner, and decided to help Ren.
The air was warm and the sun shined high and bright in the sky when Morgan’s red pickup pulled into the parking lot of the dog park. Ren sat patiently in the back before Morgan clipped a leash to his collar, and gently urged him out of the truck. It was a new experience for them, seeing as Ren normally roamed the ranch, he had never been to a dog park before. New smells filled the air while new structures and dogs filled his sight. He huffed before sitting at Morgans feet and looking up at her. An obvious nervousness settled in his eyes. He huffed again when Morgan tugged gently on his leash, and began walking towards a small pen with another dog.
He didn’t notice her at first, but when he caught a slight sniff of her scent, his eyes widened. It wasn’t Larkin.. Was it? His ears perked and he gazed ahead eagerly, he couldn’t see her directly at first, a human was in the way, but once they moved to unveil her soft lilac fur, he began pulling at the lead with excitement. Did she even remember him? It wouldn’t matter to him, as long as he could just see her for a little bit.
The gate opened and the leash came off…
He ran towards her, absolutely galloped and tackled her. He felt full again, and happy, and alive. It was really her. His little sister. How she had grown, she looked so different, yet so beautiful. He finally felt home again.
Larkin
Larkin stood up, her owner had moved in the way of her view for a brief second...Larkin jostled on her feet... Destiny stepped to the side, turning to greet another human…And then Larkin had no time to continue to worry before Ren himself was tackling her. She had no time to worry and the fear instantly was gone, she could feel the waves of love he had for her. Her cries of joy, and the sadness she had felt all coming out at once. If she could’ve cried happy tears, they would have been all over her face.
He smelled like her brother, and he looked like him too, he was Ren. Oh Ren, her sweet older, stronger brother, her protector. It was all the same suddenly, they were small again, and it was like it use to be. Nothing had changed. But so much had changed. And yet here they were, and she knew it wasn't the end any more. And she could tell he knew it to.
“Remember Ren!” She smiled so large her face felt it would come unhinged. “We will never be alone because we have each other out in the world, forever and always!” [1406/400][Larkin written by Destiny. Ren written by baers]
