Alan’s little sister loved going to the store with him. Specifically the bakery every weekend. She always got excited about the weekly new flavors of bread. Flavors and types that you normally wouldn’t think of when you think of bread. Alan let her choose a loaf of whatever she wanted every time they went. Sometimes she wanted the weird orange-blueberry swirl bread that came every now and again, or a simple strawberry roll, maybe even some of those Bacon croissants, and sometimes she just wanted a simple plain loaf of normal bread she could keep to herself. Even with all these weird and exciting flavors, Her favorite type of bread was a long baguette filled with a weird watermelon flavored cream. She always said it was a weird fruit to eat with bread but she loved the flavor. She tried to get Alan to try it every time it came around but he never did.
It was good they were happy. She was happy. Alan was happy nothing needed to change.
Until something did.
-------
They were one there way to the bakery just like any other weekend. His sister was overly excited like normal. Today was different though. Traffic was busier than normal and Alan’s sister wasn't paying enough attention because of her excitement.
Alan watched as she danced into the road. He watched as the car came racing down the road. He had to watch as the car hit her. He remembers everything going out of focus. He can’t remember whether he cried or not. Maybe it was raining.
She didn’t make it.
-------
It was about 2 months after her death when he walked into the bakery for the first time since. He doesn’t know why he went in. It hurt to think about her. It hurt to be there without her. Without her bouncing around so excitedly. He went over to look at the weekly strange flavor and breads.
And there was her favorite baguette. Filled with that strange strange watermelon filling. He asked for one to take home. He left the bakery with a long piece of bread in his hands. He sat down on some bench in some random park. He took a piece of the bread and tasted it for the first time. It was sweet. It was so so sweet. And it made him feel happy inside. He could practically see his younger sister bouncing with joy to finally have tasted her favorite.
After that, he never missed a weekend at the bakery. Trying any type or flavor of bread available.
(sorry I like to write)
