I can't believe we're already at 150... holy smokes!
here's a special doggo for you all to celebrate! this pup has a special gene called "King Cheetah". He also has a line edit of raised neck fur that permanently stands, although this can't pass down to pups!



King Cheetah: Lethal when bred together. Resulting homozygous offspring are mostly black, or what base the pup ends up as. The pattern shows faintly on the fur. Pups are overly light sensitive, subject to overheating easily, and tend to have compromised immune systems. The king cheetah gene has a 50% pass rate.


To win this hound, I want to hear a story about them that highlights their personality. This story may be up to 1000 words. You may add one extra (up to 500 words or 1 art piece). Feel free to decorate/code your form, although please make sure it is readable.

This competition will be judged on December 31st. The last day to edit your form will be December 30th at 11:59pm EST. Any edits after will result in a disqualified form.

story:

It's at night when the gaping loss snags his heart between its teeth and rends it to shreds. He wants his brother back so badly, but it's been months. It's been months and he's still not healed. A real hound would be able to move on, but Lucif- no, Apep, no longer will he bear the name of that traitor-- even now anger boils in his chest.

It's in these moments where he regrets his choice. And the constant, caged fear in the cub's dark amber eyes only makes him curl his lip.

And yet the cub still clings to Apep's side. This lanky, slip of a creature, only concerned with saving its own skin cowers by Apep's flank. Day and night, as the truck rumbles around them, and toward their destination. The only way the two know that time passes is the filter of light between the bars.

They're going towards their new home! What a thought. A home for an illegal cheetah and a hound who can barely stand him?

Apep wonders if the cub even knows for sure if the new masters won't plan to kill him like their last master.

And then, Apep wonders why he cares.

Why should he care what the stupid little whelp thinks? Apep should worry more about himself. It's not like his new masters will be any better, even if they aren't in the business of killing little cubs.

A cage is a cage is a cage.

He only wished his brother were here, except wait! His brother is dead!

Because of that cruel, disloyal, absent-minded, sniveling human who couldn't keep his brother safe like a real pack leader should!--

Abruptly frustrated, he shunts the mottled cub off his side and slinks to the opposite side of the small area to lay his head on his paws. Apep starts as he feels the cub latch against his side. Within the minute, the cub is back.

Apep merely grunts. He moves his head, planning to tell the cub off and make it stick, but in the low light those big, terrified eyes glow. He hesitates.

Lays his head back on his paws.

Those terrified, glowing eyes are the first thing he sees as he peers into the hooded cage. His master approaches from behind, and scratches right under his ornate collar. Lucifer fights not to tense up under his hands. He finds that he fights not to do many things, these days.

"You like him too, boy? Got my hands a little dirty to get a cheetah like him, but I'll have to wait till he gets full grown. Nowhere near enough fur on him."

Lucifer merely sits at the words and tilts his head. The curious look makes the man laugh in delight, before he moves to leave the room.

The hound tracks the human's footsteps out of the room, and when the door shuts behind him, Lucifer narrows his eyes. Only a matter of time, now.

He didn't think his master's stupidity could reach new heights, but now he was planning on skinning an abducted cub.

Lucifer couldn't believe his luck. He'd be rid of the man soon enough, now.

A weak leader must be culled.

A low whine from the cage distracted him from his thoughts. His gaze slid to the cowering cub, shadowed by the edges of the cage.

"Please, p-please don't let him kill me."

Lucifer bared his teeth. The minute flinch from the cub only made a thread of disgust curl in his chest. "I don't speak to sniveling mice."

It took longer than he expected for the cub to move to the light. Oh, he was shivering! Poor thing.

"P-please, let me go. He k-killed my mother, a-and--"

Terror stopped any more words from flowing. Lucifer merely looked down at the cheetah. Whatever the cub saw in Lucifer's eyes made the child freeze.

"You won't be in there for much longer." With that, Lucifer snorted, and turned away from the cub. "Maybe try not to die from terror in the meantime."

Almost like clockwork, Lucifer's master slips yet again, but this time where another human can see his mistake. An offhand comment, prideful and flippant as his attitude catches the attention of one of his master's allies. His master, shallow and dull as he is, might not catch the glint in the ally's eyes.

But Lucifer certainly does.

It's almost laughable how easy it is to nudge a door a little wider than necessary. Just enough to let the filter of the cub's cries reach the human ally's ears.

Well. Maybe not an ally for much longer. Not to the master, at least.

It takes only a day for humans with their weapons to swarm their home. To take the trophy that is the cub, no doubt for their own, but Lucifer is prepared for this.

He knows his master only associates with those as greedy as himself. The man may have been stupid enough to get himself killed, but Lucifer is no fool.

He pops open the hooded cage hours before the attack on the home. He ushers the cub to the back door that he works open as well.

"W-wait, why are you helping me?"

"Oh child, I'm not doing this out of the goodness of my heart."

Lucifer takes one last look at the dark home before they slink off into the night. The pops inside the home ring in his ears.

Oh no. Never out of the goodness of his heart.

They don't get far. With their trucks and cages, Lucifer knows there is no escaping humans. The only thing that stops him from trying to run is that he smells no scent of his master's ally.

They cage them both all the same.

And here they are. Off to their new home.

He avenged his brother's pointless death, and yet...

The chasm in his heart grows ever bigger.


The shift of the cub against his side snaps him from his thoughts.

With a resigned huff, he closes his eyes.

he scoffed just at the though of hounds living in this sad, humid,
forest. he was all gross and covered in rain too, how nice.
his chest puffed up as a tiny poisonous dart frog hopped infront of him.

he whimpered, and let out a small sigh,
im tough- right? sometimes i jump at small bugs, or the thought
of doing something mildly wrong, but- doesn't everyone?
doubts stared to flood his mind, crashing like waves against him,
thrashing, to get through, to pour out the frequent and fluid tears,
they streamed out as his lips curled, and his teeth bared.
