You see, Hess wasn't very fortunate growing up. It may sound like a cliché to every story, but it was true. Her family would be living on the streets if it weren't for her best friend's rich fortune that they had given Hess's family their spare house. It was small, like a cottage almost but they were really grateful to be given a gift like this.
They had struggled so much, even after given their new home, they found it hard to adapt to living a comfortable life. They were so near to almost having to sell their home when her mother had come up with a solution. It wasn't GREAT news, but it seemed to be the only way. She had found a offer that had paid very high currency but that would mean she would be Far, FAR from home for..... a year and a half. Her mother had already taken the job offer and left the next day, leaving everybody to wish her a bittersweet goodbye.
Hess was left with her grandparents, her aunt and... herself. Hess was young at the time and couldn't really do anything to help her family. Her grandparents would prepare the meals by themselves with the food they had somehow caught or received without buying them. Her aunt would be busy always washing the clothes from a bucket with her own bare paws and hang them outside by herself to dry them off. It was... very exhausting and Hess always felt guilty with not helping out.
She didn't fully understand what was happening but she had figured it out only a few months back from this present. She never noticed how her family would let her have the fresh food, and they would pick off the leftovers and remains, How they assured that they didn't need a pillow or blanket as they slept on the bare floor, how they always played with her whenever she needed a friend but their pain was hidden from a smile.
Hess felt so... loved and honoured to have a family like this, She felt so warm and yet... so guilty and depressed. It was a miracle they survived through long enough for her mother to return, hands full of enough currency and items that can be sold for LOADS. They managed to upgrade the house and enough stuff to keep them comfortable, for their whole lives! Hess never felt this much... love.
