indentshe always was a clumsy one. constantly wiping the dirt of her knees after a stumble into the mud. always carrying around
those silly little bandaids she forgets at home. she usually remembers about them after shes scraped her hands and knees.
indentshe’s a bit unfortunate really. people say that she’s unlucky--cursed, that she has bad karma, or something malicious is
following her.
indentshe doesn’t really believe any of that really. it’s just a silly old myth. right?
indent“i don’t really believe in things like the supernatural. the old wives’ tales and bedtime stories we tell children. i’m too
old for that now! but i guess at the same time… i don’t disbelieve in it either. it’s a big world out, who knows what’s out there?”
indentyui has always been “unlucky”. she just calls it clumsy, or a severe case of the butter-fingers. broken mirrors is apparently
a favorite of hers. yui’s had her fair share of shattered mirrors in her childhood: her grandma’s favorite antique mirror met its
untimely demise when the young pop skipped over to it. who knew an old, dusty antique mirror was so fragile? it practically just
slipped out of her fingers, it wasn’t her fault!
indentanother mirror would be forgotten soon enough on her seventh birthday. she got a haircut on that day; a cute yet messy
bob near the lengths of her shoulders. she liked to be free, it felt nice for once to not be burdened. and so, yui was drawn to the
large mirror that was to be her birthday gift. it sat neatly on the table, a blue attached to the smooth glass. and she ran to it,
hands smudging the reflective surface as she ooh’ed ad ahh’ed at it, admiring her own haircut and the cute little mirror that was
to be hers. except, in a moment of “butter-fingerness” (as she dubbed her clumsy episodes) one of her fingers managed to hook
the mirror, and drove it right over the edge of the table. how unlucky.
indentyui has encountered many other odd incidents as well: she’s ducked under one too many ladders on accident, trying to hide
from the rain (she seems to leave her cute blue umbrella at home on all the wrong days). she’s been known to open her umbrellas
indoors, much to everyone’s superstitious fears, she just wanted to see if the umbrellas were cute or not! (and right afterwards,
she finds out that she managed to forget a bag of groceries at the store again after finally getting home.) and on days where she
doesn’t go out, the days where she just stays home and reads a book or poke at a game she has on her phone, rather its days
spent moping about on how she managed to lose her favorite book for the tenth time this week, or just skulking about on how
she still managed to fail at getting her favorite card on a gatcha app.
indentmaybe crossing paths with that black cat didn’t do much to help her luck?──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
indentpitter-patter. the paws of a small cat on the smooth pavement. a normally quiet sound amplified by the ever-growing
suspicion inside of her.
indentit wasn’t long ago that yui had ran into this very cat. quite literally too. it was a normal day, she was late to another one
of her new activities class (it was a cooking lesson that night--they were making a fancy dinner-for-one) and was in quite a rush.
and of course, with the luck she’s had lately, yui completely missed the black streak of fur that darted into her path.
indentshe still remembers the pitter-patter of frantic paws that tried to scramble away, but it was too late. with the momentum
she was going at, yui had ran straight at the poor thing, tripping over both herself and it in an attempt to avoid stepping on the
cat. in the end, she managed to throw both herself and the cat into a patch of newly watered grass. needless to say, both cats
were quite unhappy about the situation.
indentbut it was strange really. turns out, the place where her activities class had taken place nearly burnt down. one of the
members had mistakenly left something on the stove, and everyone had to be evacuated out after the pan had turned into a
mini inferno-in-a-pan.
indentit really was lucky that she ran into this cat then, otherwise she would’ve been caught in that whole mess.
indentit was strange, really. ever since this strange little black cat appeared in yui’s life, odd things have been happening. a soft
mew would cause her to jump slightly, and bright green eyes would stare up at her, a mischievous spark in its eyes. and she would
bend down, hand stretched out to give the kitty a small pat, only for it to bolt away. in the next second, a loud crash would nearly
give her a heart attack. turns out, it was lucky she did, for in that split second, a wayward rock flew past right the place where her
head was supposed to be. a small child in the near park had thrown some rocks in a fit of childish rage, and had she not have ducked,
yui surely would’ve been hit.
indentand now, the strange little cat has been following her everywhere. she’s usually one for suspicions, but maybe that black little
cat has actually been bringing her bad luck: just the other day a vase of flowers fell right next to her--if she was just a few inches
to the right, she surely would’ve been hit; she lost her favorite new pair of shoes the day after she bought them and had to wear her
old, worn out shoes to yoga class; she was late to class because her alarm clock didn’t ring. and every time, yui swears she sees that
little black cat, smiling at her with that mischievous gleam in its eyes.
good luck. it seems to say.
indentand yui grew to hate it, despise it, abhor it. everywhere she goes, the black cat follows with its green eyes and small pitter
patter of its paws. she can’t get away from it. every bad accident she’s been in, it sits there, tail wrapped around its paws. every
time she forgets her papers at home, she catches a glimpse of black fur in the window. she swears its cursed her.
indentbut now that she thinks about it, she’s unsure about it. the small smile it flashes her, the mischievous glint in its eyes--it
seemed more like, relief and pride. how so? and she remembers.
indentall those times, it wasn’t a bad accident, it wasn’t a curse--it was a cushion. the little black cat she grew to hate, it wasn’t
bringing her bad luck, it was protecting her from the bad luck. the potted vase? it was the cat that clawed at her legs to get her to
move. her missing shoes? if she had worn those that day, she surely would’ve gotten it dirty since a car had ran by and splashed her.
and her alarm clock? it turns out the instructor was late to that class, so unexpectedly, yui had gotten in extra sleep.
indentyui doesn’t believe in the supernatural. it’s a strange idea. a black cat that brings luck. but, from what she’s seen. maybe
it could be true. the next time she trips over her own shoelaces or drops something important, she’ll be sure to look at that little
black cat, and give it a small little smile.
thank you. she says back.──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

Prompt wrote:Kazi came home, exhausted from being out all day. Flopping over onto her bed, Kazi curled up with her favourite stuffed toy, her tail covering her face as she sighed in relief.
Much to her dismay, Kazi felt something g tickle her nose, causing her eyes to snap open. This was unusual. There, gently tied around her tail, was a red Chinese Luck charm, with a small white Jade tiger staring back at her. Carefully, she reached out to touch the small charm, her claw carefully stroking the symbol of strength and bravery displayed before her. A rush of something unfamiliar flowed through her, making her feel warm. Weird.
Morning came, and Kazi was ready to go to school on time. This hadn't happened in months! She made it to the bus stop before the bus arrived, and her first class didn't suck as much as it usually did. Her test from Science class came back with a big 100% on it, and her math teacher brought in doughnuts for the class. A thought came over Kazi.
Was this luck charm of hers... Working? She blinked in surprise, recapping the day's events. Something was definitely amiss.
Later that day, Kazi was the star on her basketball team during their biggest game of the season, shooting the winning shot from half court, and her best friend, a blue tiger like her, gave her the special bracelet she'd lost during their sleepover a month prior. Luck, as she would have it, was on her side.
