BH #090: Adopt {Spring Event}

Postby Eremite » Wed Mar 22, 2017 3:37 am

This boy was surrendered to the shelter by someone who was under the belief that he was a Caucasian Ovcharka! Obviously he grew up to be nothing like a CO and was a bad fit for what his owner needed, a livestock and property guardian. Because of the style of his upbringing he is very aloof borderline aggressive with anyone who isn't his owner or the livestock he was raised to protect. He will need an experienced and understanding owner willing to take their time (and a lot of it) to work with him on his reactivity and be willing to keep him separate from other dogs until he accepts them, or possibly for life.

I really love this boy so I'm gonna be picky, I also own a dog that had these issues and will be looking for a form that accurately describes the care and training done for them.

Blame is a coward but self-righteous
A funny little creature hiding out in me
Hate is power with a price tag
A funny little creature screaming out in me
Listen to me
Fear is a liar but he's been right before
If you fight your shadow, you'll get lost in a war
Ambitions a champ, but he's also greedy
Drunk or sober he always wants more
I always want more
I always want more
Lust is beauty in a body bag
A funny little thing that's screaming "Just use me!"

Owner's Name: tigerblue

Dog's Name: Stitch

Other pets and their personalities: All of the dogs can be found here! Since i have tons of dogs, i cant list every personality of them, but i think his best friend would be Rodeo. Since she is a very motherly dog, and will put everything into helping others in need. She is 2 years older than Stitch, so i think is i train him to be nicer to others, i think Rodeo and Stitch would be a perfect match! Rodeo i think would also be more of a older sister to Stitch, and also help him meet my other dogs and help him open up a bit more to everyone!

Are you willing to put in the time and effort to train your new dog? Of course! With Rodeo helping i think it would go a bit faster, and be more efficient!

Do you know what heartworms are and how they are prevented? Yes! Heartworms are from infected mosquitoes and cannot be prevented, but can be cured by shots.

Are you willing to make any changes or special alterations in order to accommodate any special needs your new dog may have?: Totally! Any dog is welcome, and i would do any extra work to get the extra money for anything this dog needs! Whether it be medicine, or special toys!

What may be a reason that you would return this dog?: The only reasons i would return him, would be if he attacked someone or one of my dogs and got the severely hurt, or if i die.

One of these days a-coming, I'm gonna take that boy's crown

Cause I am, I am a little wicked
I am, I am
Hands red, hands red just like he said

I am a little wicked

No one calls you honey when you're sitting on a throne

      work in progress

Owner's Name: cujo. (of saint otterlake kennels)
      Dog's Name: severus
      Other pets and their personalities:

      - work in progress

Are you willing to put in the time and effort to train your new dog?

      - work in progress introduction

      - ideally, i'd visit him multiple times at the shelter. visits would begin without entering his kennel, i'd sit close by and wait to see if he took an interest in me - if possible, leaving a blanket or something that has my scent on it. and should he take an interest, we'd hopefully progress to a room that's neutral ground - one of the rooms where potential people and canines meet - and let him set the pace of our interactions. if his reactions were positive, we would hopefully start the adoption process, and if not, then i'm sure there is someone out there this handsome boy will choose.

      - as a reactive dog, he would keep separate from the other dogs currently living in the baltic husky branch of saint otterlake's. the 'isolation' kennel is a barn conversion; with larger kennel stalls and better security system for entering and leaving each stall, and leaving the kennel-barn itself. severus would be given as much time as he needed to settle in, in which we would try to get some basic commands down; sit, and waiting for food, or

      - after he has settled in, we would introduce him to another dog; in neutral ground, leashed and muzzled. depending on what dog we think would fit his needs better, this would be spooky, one of our older baltic huskies; a sturdy old girl who isn't easily pushed over. or modica, who is more submissive in nature.

the best case scenario would be that this would be first step in resocialising this boy as he should have been taught as a pup. worst case scenario, he reacts negatively and we revise our plans; either assessing which of our dogs, or neighbouring dogs, could possibly be a match for him, or deciding that it is best to keep him separated from other dogs permanently. saint otterlake's is a very large property, and it would certainly be possible to keep him separate. if this came to be, we would look into getting livestock to keep him occupied; most likely in the form of horses or goats.

Do you know what heartworms are and how they are prevented?

dogs can only be infected with heartworms through a mosquito bite; it takes about seven months from the time of infection for the larve to mature into adult heartworms. prevention comes in the form of monthly topicals put on the skin, or a six-month injection.

Are you willing to make any changes or special alterations in order to accommodate any special needs your new dog may have?:

      - without a doubt! from the beginning, sev will be moved into his own space away from other dogs, given time to adjust, and given a dedicated plan of where his training his headed. any needs that come to light afterwards will be taken into consideration. nothing is too much when it comes to a member of the solK family.

What may be a reason that you would return this dog?:
      - isolation. the thought of a dog spending most of their time alone, let alone one i will be spending a large amount of time getting to earn my trust and bonding with, does not sit well with me. however, if he proves he cannot be dog neutral, if not positive, and we choose to look into keeping him separate from other dogs and importing livestock from other solK branches, i would hope that severus would bond with another full time solK handler who would be willing to swap with me between training and caring for the other dogs, to putting him through his paces, give him affection, and care for the livestock. there is a possibility this may not work for a number of reasons, primarily being he may just be a one-person dog; and if it came to it, i would most certainly have to face the hard thought of returning him in hopes he would find a home more suiting to his needs.
