My name is Drella, but in the shows they call me Darkness From Above. I quite like my name, it's rather unique, don't you think so as well? I am a mere nine years young, and a short little mare at 12.3 hands. Many often think I'm much younger due to my height, and they get quite a surprise once they figure out that, no, I'm not a filly! Though, I do feel like one on the inside very often - my companions are often amused at my childish behavior before I compose myself and suddenly I'm not so childish - more of a fanciful mare with an odd personality. Oh, and the children love me! I love them back, too, of course, but I can't help but feel special as they come up to me and give me a peck on the nose, run their fat little fingers over my pelt, through my mane if they can reach it. And of course they know my favorite comfort food, that one treat I can't resist - the lovely taste and texture of dried apricots tempts me when I see a bag of them, pulled loudly out of a pocket by a child, quietly from her breeches by my own dear Mallory. Oh, and the wonderful feel as I mash them between my teeth, the wrinkled skin breaking and releasing a burst of flavor - it sends chills through my spine sometimes! Oh, I could eat those all day if the option were ever presented to me.
But now, you want to get to know me a bit more before you have to leave, yes? Alright, I suppose I can do that. I'll settle down my childish actions for you, but only for a few minutes, you hear? Well, if I may choose where we start, perhaps with my birth? Yes. I was born in the afternoon, the late afternoon, just as the moon could be seen in the sky and the humans were eating their dinner. Supper had long past, and my dam was nibbling the pasture grass when I suddenly decided my time to come into the world was now! Oh, what a surprise I gave her and the humans, the others tell me! I don't remember anything that happened for the rest of the day, really, as it was late and I was tired just from the experience! But I loved frolicking about in the pastures, my dam next to me, always there to support me, to give me advice. And of course, Mother was there, as she was for all of us. The oldest one on the ranch, she's been through so much, and still - she's watched all of us be birthed, if we were born on the ranch. I had a quiet foalhood, nice and easy, everyone supporting me and loving me, shaping me into who I am today. And I thank them for that, for I think I'd be quite different if they hadn't been there.

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
